About
Known as “Ireland’s Most Beautiful Home”, Westport House has a story that matches its beauty. One of the few still privately-owned historic houses left in Ireland, Westport House was built by the Browne family whose connections to Mayo date back to the 1500s and even relates them to the trail-blazing pirate queen and chieftain, Grace O’Malley. A visit to Westport House will tell the story of the development of the house as well as the family’s contribution to the estate and surrounding area. We hope you’ll enjoy the tales of pirates and slave emancipators as you gain a fascinating insight into the families behind the big house as well as the members of staff who made it all possible. Families can also visit the onsite Pirate Adventure Park. Keep an eye on its vibrant Events Calendar. Or book a stay in onsite Hotel Westport, hire a bell tent or bring your own to the Caravan & Camping Park.

We visited the Westport House based on a recommendation from our B&B host. The house is beautiful and the tour (hosted by John) covered the incredible history of the family. We ended up spending more than two hours walking through the house and on the many trails. If you are staying in or near Westport you should definitely include this in your visit.

Included as part of our Gate1 tour. Our guide Moren was great telling the story of the estate from lady pirate Grace O'Malley to Browne family. Extensive renovations are underway. Had high tea which was a highlight. the tea, scones, sandwiches were excellent.

Wonderful!!! Had a truly fantastic tour of such a beautiful house. Our guide, Moirin, completely made this trip. She was full of information, stories & insight and kept the entire group captivated (with light & laughs in all the right places!)!! I couldn’t recommend this highly enough & hope you’re lucky enough to get Moirin!

Went to Westport House this weekend and it was truly a delight to visit.
Our tour guide was Darren, serving the perfect mix of thorough knowledge of the House and its residents through the years, and good ol' Irish craic. Not forgetting the rest of the staff, everyone we met and talked to we're absolutely wonderful and friendly, including a staff member (who's name I sadly forgot) who entertained us with her Danish vocabulary from years ago 😃
The House itself as well as the grounds are beautiful and I can understand why so many locals and tourists would want to spend an afternoon with the family or with friends in the lovely gardens.

Can't wait to visit again someday!

I have been to visit this lovely place five times, dating back to 1983. This house is magnificent and worth the visit.
My visit this time - June of 2022 was restorative!

First - the tour was most informative and really drew the picture of the family and how the house came to be. The significance of the family who built, owned and lived in this home cannot be overstated. They were generous, just and hardworking. This tour was the first time I have had a narrated tour of the house and our guide Darren was engaging, informative and entertaining. Darren really made the house come alive to our group and helped us to understand the details of the construction, the climate challenges, the socio-economic challenges of the time and the future ahead for this beautiful place. Darren is a gem! Thank you!

Now for the second part - The house has been in the hands of a single family for hundreds of years until 2017 when it was sold. Houses such as this are an enormous expense to maintain and the taxes can be defeating when inherited. The wonderful Browne family made every effort to hold onto, preserve and maintain this place while opening it to the public and sharing the beauty of the place for all to see. In 2017 a local family - the Hughes family - purchased this lovely place and are painstakingly and at incredible cost are restoring and repairing the place to its former glory. They are meticulous and with historical accuracy and respect completely the work. Makes me, a very occasional visitor, incredibly thankful for the incredible generosity and integrity of this family. Westport House will shine again and be preserved for the future generations. Please go visit this very special house! It holds inside incredible stories, architecture and a sense of the families past and present who have lived in or own this lovely place.

I went to westport house today with 4 family friends. I was so impressed with the staff and in particular the young staff who were so friendly helpful and polite. We had a great day on the flume ride, swinging boat, climbing wall slippery dip and indoor soft area. The pizza's in the bistro were delicious and so reasonably priced. Everyone went home with smiles.

We took our visiting parents from Yorkshire to Westport House and were lucky enough to time our arrival just right and catch a guided tour. First of all we were greeted warmly by a lovely lady called Moirin and then we went on the guided tour led by Darren. He was likeable, engaging and very knowledgeable. My folks said that they thought he made the visit. The tour was 30 mins ish and then we went on our own to the extra bits Darren suggested to have a nosy. The house is gorgeous and has a really fascinating history, and to think...its came so close to being knocked down at one point! Im so pleased about the plans to restore parts of the building and grateful that there are generous benefactors. This place deserves it.
Just to add the cherry on top, on our way out the sun popped out so we got to appreciate the glorious grounds and gardens. Whoever the gardening team are deserve a flippin medal. I've nicked some ideas for my own little patch 😉
Anyhow, I would highly recommend Westport House. Next time we go back we'll explore the grounds more widely, have a go on the swan pedalos and walk through to the quay.
Many thanks and well done 👏 👏 👏
