About
Known as “Ireland’s Most Beautiful Home”, Westport House has a story that matches its beauty. One of the few still privately-owned historic houses left in Ireland, Westport House was built by the Browne family whose connections to Mayo date back to the 1500s and even relates them to the trail-blazing pirate queen and chieftain, Grace O’Malley. A visit to Westport House will tell the story of the development of the house as well as the family’s contribution to the estate and surrounding area. We hope you’ll enjoy the tales of pirates and slave emancipators as you gain a fascinating insight into the families behind the big house as well as the members of staff who made it all possible. Families can also visit the onsite Pirate Adventure Park. Keep an eye on its vibrant Events Calendar. Or book a stay in onsite Hotel Westport, hire a bell tent or bring your own to the Caravan & Camping Park.

    Definitely recommend the tour!!
We had a tour today from Ben. I have to say he is one of the best tour guides we have had on our trip to the Emerald Isle! Awesome tour. Very informative and kept the whole group engaged. The house is even better than the photos. Definitely would recommend to all! Westport is a great town!!

    Great Experience at Westport House
We visited Westport House 3 times during a month-long holiday in Westport and took various visiting family members with us at different times. What a tremendous experience! The staff at Westport House is wonderful. We had tours from Moirin and Ben, who were both great -- very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Breda was also incredibly helpful and made our visits worthwhile and enjoyable. We highly recommend the tours at Westport House.

Westport house is located in beautiful grounds and it’s definitely worth visiting the house itself. It’s cheaper to book online than to buy tickets at the door. Staff were friendly and helpful. It’s advisable to wear a mask as despite the one way system, people don’t follow it!
Unfortunately, the cafe was closed and the mobile coffee cart was a poor alternative - it took the lad ages to make coffee that wasn’t nice.

On a recent family holiday to Westport we called to see Westport House. Beautiful House & Gardens and well worth a visit when in Westport. Plenty to see in the house & gardens and lovely walk around the grounds. Although it’s not as personal as an actual tour guide, the audio tour which you can download is very informative & interesting. Our kids who didn’t expect to enjoy our visit were pleasantly surprised and we would all recommend this a place to visit with your family when in the area.

We did a second tour of Westport House which was for children. This was given by the wonderful and vivacious guide Katherine. She showed the children and parents the great kitchen and servant quarters and explained what Life was like in the olden days for those employed by the rich family of Westport House. She finished the tour with showing us the dingy dungeons where the musty smells and story telling of the hapless prisoners and how they were only released by bartering for trade and food was spell binding. Definitely not to be missed and encourages children's love and appreciation of history. Thank you Westport House for your great welcome. Myself, my Auntie and my young son will treasure this forever.

The house is situated very centrally and there are great walks from behind the Wyatt Hotel. Lots of water, weirs and trails. The house is €13.50 per adult for entry. you can visit the ground floor and basement only. It's reasonably interesting, there is a self-guided audio tour too.

My understanding is that you can walk to the harbour through the grounds too.

Great tour of Westport House from tour guide Darren. He was both knowledgeable and entertaining-well worth doing. Major conservation work has been carried out on the exterior of the house and next up is the interior, so now is a great opportunity to see the house as it was- before the works start.

Dear Clare - Thank you for your lovely review and very kind mention of Darren. We are blessed to have passionate guides on our team. You'll have to come back to visit to hear about the next installment of developments on the estate. And we look forward to welcoming you back. Warmest wishes - Biddy Hughes

Westport house and gardens are a little peace of paradise. The estate is soo vast with gorgeous planting, waterfalls, flowers and wildlife.
The house itself is probably the best preserved historic house I have ever seen. It is an amazing visual depiction of Irish history.
This is a must see if in Westport.

This was a really interesting tour round a beautiful house. The tour itself lasted about 40 mins, with John, a very knowledgeable guide. We then had the opportunity to explore the house at our own pace. The grounds are beautiful too.

Amazing tour! Our tour guide Moirin was fantastic, very entertaining and knowledgeable. The house is beautiful even if showing the signs of time - that's what makes it even more interesting and it's all part of its very interesting history. Unfortunately the weather wasn't very good so we didn't take a look at the garderns/park around the house.
The guided tour takes about 30 minutes and you're free to explore the rest of the house on your own before and after. I highly recommend taking the tour.

Westport House gardens is a very pretty place to go for a walk if staying in Westport. We didn't go into the house. There is a coffee shop and restaurant situated in the grounds which were closed the day we were there. There seems to be a lot of things available for children which were also closed the day we were there.

We visited Westport house over the easter break, when the weather was less than favourable. We had an amazing time. We had a 2yr and a 8yr old with us and they loved the pirate adventure park.
The team of very young staff are polite friendly and very helpful, considering they were out in the rain all day long...well done to you all.
Loved it grounds are fabulous the house is very interesting. The only one downfall i could see are the prices in the sandwich bar...
