This is the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland and is also among the country's oldest, one of the great heartlands of megalithic culture in Western Europe with monuments ranging from five thousand to five thousand eight hundred years old. Archaeologists have recorded over 60 tombs of which 30 are visible – the creation of neolithic peoples. The site... More

We went during Christmas week, so the visitor center was closed. Not wanting to waste the trip, we hopped the wall and walked up. I find these sites amazing just knowing the people who made them did so thousands of years ago. I even made a friend with a horse on the way back!

When planning our trip to Sligo, we had intended to take a stand up paddle board excursion. Unfortunately, plans fell through a few weeks before our intended journey. Rather than alter our itinerary and hotel reservations, we searched for alternate excursions/attractions. We are so pleased to have read about Carrowmore. I can say with all honesty that it was one... More

My EU language and Dressage students enjoyed this ancient landscape with me on Supermoon night with the light of the large moon glow highlighting the dolmens over the horizon. For Harry Potter fans among my group it was magic!!

We spent some time in the visitor's center to learn more about this fascinating site, which made the walk through the fields more meaningful. The passage tombs and stone circles are amazing! Even though we were there in August, there weren't many tourists about, so it was a peaceful experience. This is the largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland, and one... More

This is a very spiritual place. I had never heard of it until we stumbled across it by accident. The self guided tour is very good and explains much of the pre history of this site and its relationship to other sites of a similar ilk such as those found at Avebury, Stonehenge and the Orkneys.

Visited late afternoon and few other people were there. The staff at the visitor's center were helpful, and the information provided with guides to the large site were informative. NewGrange is a crowded experience where you are led to buses and guided through the site like cattle, but there at Carrowmore it was quiet and we could explore on our... More

These passage tombs on the top of a hill are interesting in their own right but there are also magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. The site is reached by driving up narrow lanes off the N4 at Castlebaldwin to a small car park, followed by a steep walk up a track and an even steeper scramble up a hillside.... More
