The Thonas Francis Meagher statue right in front of the Tower Hotel and Reginald's Tower is well worth a stop.
He is famed for adopting the tricolour as the Irish flag that has endured to this day. He had a very interesting life as you will learn if you visit the room dedicated to him in the Bishops Palce about 100m up the road.
The statue has him mounted on his horse in a suitably confident and grand pose.

The Thomas Francis Meagher Statue is an imposing structure in the middle of a carriageway on The Mall opposite Reiginald’s Tower in Waterford City. The equestrian statue commemorates one of Ireland’s most famous nationalist leaders, he was born in The Mall, the same street where the statue is situated. His father was the former mayor of Waterford.

Thomas Meagher fought passionately for Irish Independence and to break away from British Rule. During the battle for independence he created the green, white and gold tricolour flag which then became the national flag of Ireland. He was arrested by the British and charged with sedition & sentenced to death but the sentence was later changed and he was exciled to Tasmania.

He escaped to America where he led the Irish Brigade during the American Civil War He subsequently served as Governor of Montana and died in a drowning accidient in 1897. The statue is a worthwhile visit whilst in Waterford City.

Believe it or not, this was one of the must see things on my list. General Meagher is a hero of mine, not just for what he did working for Irish independence, but for what he did in the American Civil War, if something needed done, they sent in the Irish Brigade. I've been to the battlefields he's fought at and never saw a statue honoring him, so this was special. The way it was surrounded by flowers and showing him on the horse was a fitting tribute.

This imposing statue has replaced a statue of Father Luke Wadding the man responsible for celebrating St Patrick's Day & the only Irish man considered for Pope. His statue has been moved outside a small church in Grey Friars ( a couple of streets away).
This piece is too big for its location, The horse causes passers by to strain to see the top from their passing cars.
At what is the busiest traffic junction in the whole city drivers now have to watch for tourists trying to get their best instagram shot.

Unless you are really into back history, its not really worth going to find. Its next to the reginald tower so I suppose its worth knowing a little about the man when you see the statue from the tower

Commemorates a significant figure in Ireland’s brigade during the American Civil War. The monument is found close to Reginald’s Tower and Thomas Francis is one of Ireland’s most famous national leaders.

During a guided tour of Ireland we stopped in Waterford and our tour director pointed out this statue. Since we were running late, I did not have a chance to walk by and get a closer look, just through the bus window.

It's an impressive looking statue, and of great interest to me after having read Timothy Egan's excellent book: The Immortal Irishman. Meagher was part of a failed rebellion in 1847 and was sent to prison in Australia. He escaped from there and made it to the U.S. where he was a hugely sought after and gifted orator. When the U.S. Civil war broke out, he enlisted in the famed Irish Brigade, eventually becoming it's General. After the war he was made deputy Governor of Montana, where he was murdered (while in his early 40s) by local land/cattle/robber barons who felt threatened by him.

Fascinating history, and the statue looks to be a very fitting tribute to a famous Irishman.

Really excellent statue. An equestrian statue ~ being that it's one of Thomas Francis Meagher on horseback. Very pertinent & especially meaningful to students of history & history " buffs " when you KNOW the 'rest of the story' ~ Thomas Francis Meagher was a native son of Waterford, Ireland. He travelled to France over 100 years ago. The Irish people had not yet wrenched their freedom from old England & many of the early heroes and founders of The Republic of Ireland had been studying and learning about the French peoples' ideas and principles they were seeking to live according to ~ those ideas & principles mainly consisting of LIBERTY (freedom), EQUALITY (as human beings with kings and potentates ), BROTHERHOOD (Sisterhood ~ as well...since we are all in the "FAMILY OF MAN") ~and the STATUE HONOURS ~ more than just the man who brought back to Ireland the first TRI-COLOUR (of GREEN, WHITE, & ORANGE) AND flew that flag from a WATERFORD WINDOW ~~~The Irish flag ~ HONOURS PEACE....as in the MIDDLE WHITE SECTION OF IT...like a WHITE DOVE symbolizes PURE SPIRIT as well as PEACE. So, as I've been reading and learning (also thanks to free "Ted Talks" and educational videos on YouTube ~~~it all seems to help me better understand & truly believe at heart that we ALL WANT PEACE & LOVE & FREEDOM within our homeland as well as for others. Sorry, I write too much sometimes and talk a bit too much too. And, I've NOT YET KISSED THE BLARNEY STONE...so ,,,, you I hope will KNOW THIS IS NO BLARNEY or nonsense I'm writing. All of it is as true as the day is long. Cheers & God bless you, too.
