Designated a national monument in 1952, Tacumshane Windmill is the only surviving complete windmill of its kind in the Republic of Ireland. Built in 1846, it features a rare revolving straw thatch cap to catch the wind for its sails. Beautifully preserved and maintained, the key to have a peek inside is available from the adjacent Millhouse Bar & Restaurant.

You can stay outside and read the boards or......get the key from the local pub and climb all 3 stories inside and see exactly how the thing works! Great stop and the pub next door does some great food and has a beer/picnic garden.

An interesting thatched windmill, still in working order. Unable to go inside, but there was plenty of information available.

Took ages to find this little mill, but there's something very cute about it, how it sits in the middle of a field like a mushroom that's been blasted from the past :D It's worth checking out if you are on the way to Kilmore...More

This is the oldest windmill with its mechanical workings intact. Loved the setting in a field behind a rural pub in a field with only the car park at the side. Didn't get inside as the place it said the keys were available was closed...More

Reportedly Ireland's oldest windmill 5km from Rossalare Harbour. It is in great condition and a key can be obtained from the local shop to go inside. The majority of the workings are intact and in good order. A fine example of mills before the advent...More

Nice to see one of the few remaining windmills of Ireland. Key to go inside wasn't available at the time of my visit, so it might be worth checking with the tourist office before you go.

Hard to find, but if you use GPS coordinates or a really good map you can get there. The key is next door at the pub. A tiny place but you can clamber up the ladders, examine the gears and marvel at the technology of...More
