We were staying at Ferry Meadows campsite so decided to take a trip on the Nene Valley railway. We walked to Overton station and bought a rover ticket which meant we could get on and off the train as we wanted. We had about half...More
This isn’t a cheap day out but it was worth every penny. They try to have their big steam train running but do have others. Wansford and Peterborough stations have plenty to see and do.
Only thing I found a bit strange is the guy...More
Being a big steam engine fan I was thrilled to see NVR footplate experience options and in particular, their extra special opportunities to drive special guest locomotives beyond their normal fleet. I was lucky enough to get my hands on exLNER A4 60009 Union of...More
So much to see on a trip along the line (especially behind a large steam engine). Recommend a visit to the café - good food and the GPO coach book stall, always find something to buy in there. Well maintained railway with slick operation.
We were staying at Ferry Meadows caravan site and the railway runs alongside the park. The occasional whistle from the trains and a plume of smoke is a sign that the track is close at hand. The station is a real step back in time...More
First time of actually riding the train; previously have visited a few times for the café which is a great alternative to motorway services (lovely bacon butty & cup of tea), just off the A1.
The train journey is a decent length return trip and...More

My husband received a voucher at Christmas and we were able to enjoy our day out in the summer in August. Although the steam engine wasn't running on the day we visited, even though there was a Diesel instead, this did not spoil the experience....More
Although arranging the trip was delayed for 18 months, we really enjoyed the steam train ride and cream teas our daughter purchased for us as a Christmas present. The scenery was lovely and the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.

We went for many successive years when the kids were younger. Every year it got quicker and slicker until it became like a conveyor belt, they couldn't get rid of you fast enough! The queues were long but at least they put a tent over your head, at the end of which you grabbed a couple of seconds and a photo opportunity with Santa before your children were presented with an age and gender related prezzie by his little helpers then you were bundled unceremoniously onto the train because they were running late. I think the prezzies were rejects they got in bulk from a local sympathetic toy firm with a warehouse full of them so don't expect too much. My daughter named her toy dog "Manky" which I think just about summed it up. It isn't cheap although I expect you will get a party rate and I hope they have regained a little old world charm and patience again. You don't want to feel rushed and pushed, you want to relax and enjoy the Seasonal atmosphere of the Santa Special.
One for the kids really which became a Christmas ritual.
