Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby. We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire. We also run education and learning programmes, and hold events and exhibitions with the purpose of sharing knowledge and inspiring creativity and making amongst the people of Derby. As well as schools and student learning, we run many events for adults and groups, as well as families. Our collections and the information we hold about them are as unique as our location and history; we are a city continually shaped and driven by creativity and innovation, located in a valley that changed the world. The services we provide are also designed to promote the city: using its rich and important past to inspire its future.

Lovely museum and incredibly well presented. The staff are wonderful. Alan spent a lot of time with me and my daughter educating us about Joesph Wright which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Would return time and time again. Thank you all.

I dropped in by chance on a wet Saturday...what a great find!! The displays are well thought out, very accessible, easy to understand you can get 'up close and personal',with the exhibits! The informative plaques provide sufficient information, without overwhelming the reader. Lovely coffee shop and friendly, welcoming staff - definitely worth a visit or two. :D

This museum is worth visiting if you are in Derby. Most people are aware of the Joseph Wright paintings but there are other exhibits that are worth looking at. The only disappointment is that are not any paintings on permanent display.by Derby's other great artist.

Like the Tardis, the Derby Museum and Art Gallery is unimpressive from the outside, but is disproportionately roomy once inside. I was keen to see the collection of paintings by the great Enlightenment painter, Joseph Wright of Derby, and appropriately, his home town gallery houses the biggest collection of his sorely in the world. These were all fascinating, as were... More

Quite a mix everywhere really-stuffed uk mammals and stuffed Australian mammals, the odd mummy and an ancient log boat and some wonderful paintings. Browsed for an hour and a half and found the cafe was excellent-good value for money and very good choice for such a small place. Highly recommend the museum and cafe-parked in Britain's safest carpark on its... More

Oooo the cakes are just divine and that was just one of the many reasons that we won the Best Cafe in Derby award. I think I have tried every cake so far which is why I have had to go up a dress size.......but it's worth it!!! More

Visited here today 14/2/2017 with my grandson age 4 1/2. I have been before but this was a first visit for him and he loved it. He is very inquisitive about everything and asked lots of questions. He especially liked the military bit with lots of guns etc. Today was an activity day as it was 1/2 term and he... More

Really glad you and your grandson enjoyed your visit. Just thought you might like to know that every Friday from 10. - 11.30 we run a free activity session for under 5s. There is a different theme each week and you don't have to book. Hope to see you again soon. More
