    Meerkat Experience - LOVED it!
We attended in October 2023 as a Christmas present from my partner, had originally intended to go in summer but had to rebook due to an injury. The rebooking was handled extremely well, and it was easy to then book again. We had the meerkat experience, and boy was it worth it. I've loved meerkats ever since I was a small child, and getting to go up close with them was literally a dream come true. We met the group of five males first, and they climbed over us to get the food which Melanie would put in our (gloved) hands. We then moved outside to meet the group of 2 males & one female, the situation was much the same with them taking the food from our hands, sitting on our laps. I would recommend this experience to anyone, it really was incredible to be up close and personal with these amazing creatures. We also explored the rest of the zoo, which was very enjoyable, particularly enjoyed feeding the available animals with the pellets from the shop.
Thank you for you review. We're really pleased you enjoyed your visit to us and have passed your thanks on to Mel and the team. We hope to see you again soon. Will

    A brilliant meerkat experience.
We had a great afternoon on our meerkat experience. We had a full hour with two different groups of meerkats, Hand feeding them was a brilliant experience, with them climbing on to your knees to get nearer to the food in your hands. Absolutely loved Steve and Stumpy. They are so funny. A very entertaining time. Our ranger Mel was also excellent. Very informative and answered all our questions. We arrived well in advance of our time and we had a good look round the rest of the animals. All of the staff are very welcoming. It is all very well looked after and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole time there.

    Real VIP experience
We took our 5 year old here for her birthday and we’re greeted by the lovely Emma. That’s where the VIP element began. Emma was amazing with the kids (and us adults) and was so much fun. She balanced the tour with interesting information and lots of fun and messing about. She was hilarious, passionate and an absolute credit to the whole experience. We had the best time! (Lola and Mia say thanks Emma!)

Highly recommended, both zoo and their experiences
We booked the Meerkats, lemurs and serval experience and it was all we’d hoped for and more. Visiting the rest of the zoo is included and they have a fantastic range of wild felines, some of which I hadn’t seen before (common genet, a tiny cuter than life creature, and a fishing cat, incredibly rare). Beautiful big owls, deer, llamas, silver foxes which had the gorgeous winter coat on, wolves too. The animals look incredibly well looked after with all enclosures clear, the staff very approachful, friendly and knowledgeable. The experience itself was a delight from one end to the other, we had meerkats climbing on us, the porcupine with whom they share an enclosure making a brief appearance just to enhance the moment, June the lemur decided that my partner and I were good climbing posts too and thanked us with a few kisses, which made my knees melt, as they are my favourite animals, and Zeus the serval looked as incredibly cute from close up as he does in photos. The group we were part of was a very good one too, everyone refrained from stroking the animals, as they don’t particularly like it (very hard to do, or rather not to, but we respected the critters), and accepting that they only interact on their own terms and will. I cannot recommend both the zoo and the experience highly enough, we cannot wait to return

    Great meerkat experience
Our purpose for the visit was for the Meerkat experience which was really good fun. The staff were knowledgeable and very friendly and the experience lasted for about an hour, visiting the various meerkat clans at the zoo. The zoo itself is small in comparison to other collections, but they seem to try and house a good variety of creatures and animals.

An absolutely briliant day that we did not want to end.
Wow, this experience and day was so much more than we thought it could be, and I cannot rwcommend it enough. We had the best day and cannot wait to come back again. Friendly, knowledgable staff, a fantastic animal park with loads to see and do. Absolutely brilliant.

    Animal experience to remember
As part of my 50th birthday celebrations my daughters had paid for us to take part in one of the animal experiences at Hoo Zoo. We chose the lemur, meerkat and serval experience and were not disappointed. The keeper was experienced, very knowledgable and friendly and made us all feel at ease. The lemurs were the stars of the show for us. Such great characters! If you have the time and finances to do this take a trip to Hoo Zoo and give it a go. Lots for younger children to do as well so we’ll be back with Grandchildren when they’re older.

    Carnivore combo experience
Really fun and interesting day on the carnivore animal experience meeting a celebrity owl 😀( from Harry Potter!) gorgeous Artic foxes, a beautiful Serval and friendly boa constrictor. Small groups that allows time individually with the animals. Melanie our guide was lovely and very knowledgeable. Rest of the day free to enjoy the rest of the Zoo. Particularly liked the Wallaby walk and loved seeing the wolves .. already checking out details of the Wolf encounter for a future visit.

    Junior zookeeper experience
Our daughter’s 10th birthday present, exceeded our expectations. Friendly and knowledgeable keeper who took the group round. Lots of hands on experience with the animals, our daughter’s highlight was having a snake wrap itself around her. Lots to see and do, and every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful. Will definitely return in warmer weather to spend more time wandering round! A note of caution to those with reduced mobility, although the site is flat, the ground is quite uneven in places, and it’s gravel paths. The menu in the cafe is burgers, chips, pizza, hotdogs or prepacked sandwiches. If these aren’t to your liking, then go prepared with your own picnic!

Buy experiences through groupon not direct. The prices the farm charges is extortionate . Myself and my husband had an experience entitled “ animal keeper for half day “
Groupon charge £59 .... Hoo Farm charge £180 !!!

To put this in perspective, you can get 15 months membership (free access) to Chester Zoo for 2 adults for less that that .

The staff were very knowledgeable and we did enjoy our experience which actually started at 10 and finished at 12.30. Should finish at 1pm.

The experience consisted for quite a long time of animals being brought to you in a play barn area . I understand this was due to the need to keep the animals warm but there was a lot of time hanging around whilst animals were swapped over.

Also, groups of 8 was too large when everyone wanted to hold the animals. If I had paid full price I wouldn’t of being happy.

The staff did make sure we washed our hands regularly but I didn’t see them washing their hands until the end.

I would not recommend the food at all. Bring your own .

In addition, I started to feel unwell , feverish at lunchtime and we did have another experience booked from 3pm. I asked for advice and was told that I could cancel and rebook but it would cost an additional £25 . As this experience only cost £39 for 1 hour, it was an awful lot of money to expect us to pay . There was no questions about whether I might have Clovid 19 and no provision had obviously been made in the event of someone falling ill whilst there .

Hi Janet, Thank you for your review, I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your experience with us. We do advertise on our website exactly what the experience will entail along with the group sizes and that it's 3 hours long including the drink break at the end. We do make use of lots of voucher websites to make the experiences affordable for everyone. Our keepers all wash their hands between bringing each animal to you - hence the slightly longer delay at the moment. We do offer free rebooking at present due to COVID-19, however we cannot offer this once you're on site. We do make it very clear in multiple places during the booking process that any cancellation made less than 72 hours before your experience will be subject to a £25 rebooking fee and you click to say that you agree to this when you book. From our multiple emails to each other I know that you received these. This is to ensure fairness to all visitors due to how busy the experiences are during peak periods. Kind Regards Will Dorrell Partner

I’ve been to Hoo Farm twice now. Once on an adult experience in October 2019 and on a Junior Half Day in Feb 2020.

It’s such an amazing place, everybody in our group loved the experience. It ticked a lot of things off our bucket lists as a collective.

Our 7 year old absolutely loved meeting the ring tailed lemurs, cuddling and feeding meerkats, holding a snake, a skunk and getting to see a giant tortoise up close.

The animals are very well cared for and you can tell the keepers have personal compassion for the animals and for their roles. They’re very knowledgeable and really contain the experiences and make everyone feel safe, including the animals.

It’s got such a lovely vibe, you can tell it’s more of a family owned place rather than a corporate type zoo and we much prefer this. Everyone who works there seems really invested in the place.

I’d probably be here every week if I lived nearer, can’t recommend enough for animals lovers and young families who are interested in learning more about animals.

Booked the meerkat, serval and lemurs experience for my partners xmas pressi. Great experience. Especially the meerkat experience was absolutely amazing. My 1 complaint would be the young girl who took us round wasnt exactly enthusiastic. Even as far as when the groups were being split up announcing she didnt want a group with children in it. I get why she didnt as we were going into an enclosure children couldn't go in. But came across extremely rude.

Also when we were in with the servals (which was amazing) she told us to just listen to the other tour guide who was giving information out to the other group in the opposite enclosure. For £120 I expected a little more than getting to over hear a conversation. However saying that she was happy to answer any questions we had and the experience was amazing, but I dont think I would be paying that much for an experience again with someone who didnt seem overly bothered about being there.

When we spent some time around the zoo we also witnessed another visitor put their hands into an owl enclosure grab one of the chicks that had clearly been put out for food and give one to a cat onsite and then put the other one into another bird enclosure. I couldn't find a member of staff to tell this too. But clearly if a member of public can reach that far into an enclosure to pick up the food you need to rethink where the food is being put.
Overall was an alright experience probably wouldn't rush back.

Hi gcrandall, Thank you for your review, I'm very surprised by your comments and will be investigating them further. They certainly don't sound like our staff but I will be your comments very seriously and following it up. Our animal food is scattered throughout their enclosure. The chicks in the owl enclosures are put on the floor and it would not be possible for a customer to reach them due to the design of the enclosure. However, if the owl moved the chicks up onto a branch I can see that happening. Again, I'll happily look into this further. Thank you again for visiting, we hope to see you again in the future. What a fantastic day out! Our first in the UK since lockdown. We spent about 4.5 hours at Hoo Farm including a 1-hour experience getting to see the servals, meerkats and lemurs up close. Our guide was Beth who was exceptionally knowledgeable. She didn't rush us at all and even though the servals were being a little aloof she was patient and that paid dividends as we were able to get very close to Zeus. We were with the meerkats for about 15 minutes and were told how to handle them and they enjoyed lots of lovely cuddles! Finally we went to see the lemurs to feed them bananas. They tend to keep their distance apart from one naughty lemur who likes to jump on you but the Keepers are very keen to make sure they don't do this! We had to wear gloves when seeing both servals and the lemurs but not when seeing the meerkats as they don't like them. We didn't have to wear a mask on any part of our experience unless we wanted to.

We love visiting Hoo Farm and the animals here are definitely well looked after. There were also lots of new animals compared to our last visit in 2018 and so if you haven't been recently, pop along. You can also buy animal feed for £2 per pot and it tells you on the top which animals you can feed with this. There are lots of feeding experiences and meet the animal experiences throughout the day so you can always get to meet the animals up close and personal.

There is is a small restaurant there where you can order burgers, hot dogs (vegan alternatives available) and sandwiches. We paid about £7 each for vegan burger/hot dog which came with chips and a hot or cold drink.

There were so many stations at which to wash your hands and lots of hand sanitiser stations too. You really couldn't go more than about 100m without seeing one. All the staff had face masks on and it seemed an exceptionally safe environment to be in and even better, most of it is outdoors. Lovely day out with brilliant staff, thank you Hoo!

What a great experience and lovely day out. We travelled up from Essex to enjoy the experience at Hoo Farm and we all thought the trip was well worth it. Five of us went to the zoo to see the two of us on the experience. The experience group of 6 people, was a nice size for us all to get a turn with each of the animals. The male Serval was very friendly, Meerkats were great fun as were the Lemurs. All animals were well treated and seemed happy, as were the staff who were all very informative and seemed to love and care for the animals. Overall a great little zoo very friendly and perfect for a few hours. The cost of the experience was well worth it as is the entry cost to the zoo.
Great day out for our group aged 7 to 73.

I bought a groupon voucher for the ‘Carnivore Combo’ experience for my husband’s birthday and we went at the end of July with our two children aged 10 and 13 and we had a great day out. It’s a fab little place with a large variety of animals and lots of opportunities to meet/feed various animals throughout the day. The lady who does most of the talks at these sessions is so knowledgeable too. Our voucher also covered a one hour session meeting foxes, servals, owls and snakes too which was amazing getting so close to them-thanks to Beth who we did the experience with as she made it really interesting for us. We ended the day after watching a sheep race with ice cream from the cafe and the kids ran off some steam in the play areas. I’d highly recommend this place.

We came across Hoo Farm as a Groupon offer for an animal encounter and thought we would try it out. When we arrived we were intitially dubious, as the pace looks a bit run down but the keepers quickly changed our impresion. We were placed in a group of four (including myself and husband) and went to meet the Lemurs. The keeper really knew her animals and we were taken into the enclosure to meet 3 Lemurs who really love grapes! They were so tame, taking grapes from us and hoding on to our hands. Next we swaped keeper and went to the Servals. Again the keeper was very experenced and could tell us all we needed to know. We stroked them and got sprayed by one being friendly! We visited the Meerkats last and again swapped keeper who introduced the Meerkats who had been hand reared as their mum died. They loved the contact and snuggled into our necks. We left feeling elated and knowing a lot more about the animals. The washing fascilities and sanitizers were readily available and we were able to visit the rest of the farm after our experience. Thouroughly recommend to cuples, families, old and young. A great day out.

Lemur, Serval and Meerkat Experience - this was such a great experience. The keepers were well organised and had lots of knowledge to share regarding all of the animals. We had a small group of people to one keeper which worked well and ensured everyone had plenty of time to enjoy the experience feeding and stroking the animals, as well as asking questions. Keeper made sure everyone was comfortable and fully explained how it would work before we entered the enclosures. Enjoyed getting so close to the animals and hand feeding them. You're welcome to take lots of pictures and videos which was great. The cost of the experience also includes entrance to the rest of the zoo so you can really make a day of it and see all of the animals. Our group had 6 people with a variety of ages and the experience was enjoyed by all. Great opportunity to get close to some wonderful animals!

My husband and I booked a badger experience a good year and a half ago but due to Covid were unable to attend, however Hoo Zoo still honoured the booking and we re-booked for the evening of 11/09/2021.

We were allowed entry to the zoo earlier in the day so got to see all the non-nocturnal animals as well as some that were nocturnal (raccoons, etc). I would really recommend a visit to the zoo even if you don’t have an animal experience booked. It’s a brilliant day out.

We returned later in the day and were met by our guide (sorry I don’t know your name but she was also on admissions that day). Her knowledge of all animals, including the badgers and their family hierarchy, was incredible. Such a fantastic ability to deal with persons of all ages as we had both adults and children in our party and we were all included all of the time.

The badgers are wild and so a sighting was not guaranteed however our guide strategically placed food around the area near the hide so if the badgers did wish to visit us, they would be suitably rewarded.

This tactic worked brilliantly for us. We were VERY close to wild badgers who chose to visit on this occasion. It was an incredible experience that seemed to be to educate rather than to make money for the zoo.

The zoo seem to have a healthy respect for wild animals (badgers, hedgehogs, birds etc) as areas of the estate are left wild purposefully.

A brilliant day and evening out that we won’t forget. Well done Hoo Zoo!

My daughter and I went to Hoo Zoo a few days ago. We had purchased the meerkat experience that included entry to the Zoo. We had a terrific time, the experience was well managed and led by a keeper with knowledge and enthusiasm. We had the opportunity to meet and feed the zoos 3 groups of meerkats. The meerkats are happy to climb up on you to enjoy a meal of fruit and mealworms, it is mucky but great fun, just don’t wear your smartest trousers.
The rest of the zoo is very enjoyable with a wide range of animals. Of particular note are the range of cats, the binturongs and the lemurs with their new babies. You can buy feed to feed some of the animals for a reasonable price but only the sheep were really interested, even the goats refused it.
The only let down for the whole day was the very poor quality of the food in the cafe, beyond that I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
