Fantastic day with lots to do
We visited the farm today on a Year 1 school trip and it was brilliant! Hari, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and very approachable, making sure the children learnt lots of new and interesting facts. The children were able to feed all kinds of different animals, stroke baby animals in the petting corner, go on a donkey ride and go on a tractor ride, too, which made for lots of excited children. Overall, a fantastic day had by all, with lots to do throughout the day!

    Brilliant nursery day out!
We went to the farm as a nursery outing with children aged from babies upto preschool. There was lots to do for all ages and everybody had such a fun filled day out including our parents. The staff at the farm are amazing and couldn't do enough for our families from making sure everybody was ok, answering questions and even helping our little ones with the activities that the farm organised for all of us to do. We can't wait to go back and do it all again such a lovely day and all had such fun along the way a great educational and fun day was had by us all. Thank you smithills farm

A good day out for families
Visited the farm a few times since my children were born. My last visit was approximately 3 years ago. I booked the farm and the Easter egg hunt a few weeks ago and thought maybe they would have outgrown it. I was wrong, they absolutely loved it. My eldest (12) really enjoyed feeding and stroking the animals. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the animals appeared well and looked after. We had a really good day. Thank you.

No matter the weather, a great day out.
An amazing day out with the family, lots of animals to see, feed, stroke. There's an animal corner to get up close to the baby animals, you can even bottle feed the goats/lambs. There's a calf feeding area, a milking view point. You can see the milk bottles, yoghurt and ice cream being produced and bottled/packaged. The staff are knowledgeable and extremely customer focussed. Their love and care of the animals cannot be faulted. Great outdoor areas, as well as in shed viewing. Play parks for the children, which have been updated recently. Great value food available in the cafe, which has recently been modernised and extended to support the visitors needs. Donkey rides/tractor rides are available at additional costs along with feed. All reasonably priced.

Bolton day out ! Honest review !
Was a cold and wet Saturday , booked online as advised that they don’t like booking at door and like to know , so that they don’t have to many on the farm at once, so had to book a time . Which made us think it wouldn’t be crowded! Was wrong ! There was so good parts of it . However bad parts , poor sheep that looked Ill and nobody seemed to be around tending to the animals in the pens . Food you bought from the shop and the animals in the pens knew about it . Animal corner in theory was great to meet them . However there was no control over how the animals were held as there is at least 40-60 people (mainly children)in there and 3 handlers ( who were great) , however an accident waiting to happen ! Things under construction around the farm or looking like that ? Could be covered up or boards put round , looking like they didn’t care ! Reptile corner was sad ! Others have mentioned before , snakes with skins and poo in rough looking boxes ! Just laid on the floor ! Cafe was filthy and needed a deep clean , , and just tidying between customers would help ! Tractor ride you paid extra for to see donkeys . And donkey rides however at least they only let certain size children on them . So there was one bonus ! Some animals looked clearly looked after well , others not so good . The parks outside were a positive . And the ice cream and the showing of how things work on the farm were good 👍 so the dairy side of it great 👍 , other bits not so great !

    Fantastic day
We had a lovely experience today at the farm. From booking in and throughout our time with our 4 grandkids, all the staff were very polite and friendly. The kids loved the animals and interacting with them, especially the pets corner where the lovely staff explained fully the different animals and the kids were allowed to stroke and hold them. Plus the tractor ride was a great success with the herd of donkeys swarming around so the kids could feed them. The play park was a great success for toddlers and the older ones. Overall a fantastic day out and we will return. Well done Smithills farm.

    Great day out
Loved our day out at Smithills. Lots to do and see - feeding the animals, stroking baby animals in pets corner, bottle feeding calves, tractor ride, donkey ride, good playgrounds, watched milking. Easily filled the day and felt it was really good value for the entry fee. Seemed clean for a farm and didn’t feel too crowded despite being a hot, sunny day in school holidays. We all thought the ice cream was delicious and very reasonable prices. We enjoyed seeing the milking then seeing where the milk is processed, seeing the ice cream being made then being able to buy it to try. My oldest son is too tall for the donkey rides but it was a lovely touch from staff to let him lead his younger brother’s donkey. Only improvements we’d like to see were to slow down with the baby animal, most went past very quickly so barely got a stroke and my son would have liked a talk or handling session with the reptiles.

    Fun and Educational
The mention of going to the Farm is guaranteed to get the kids excited. Spend a few hours or all day - lots of outdoor space and young animals to feed and handle. The cost for 2 adults and 2 kids with the extras ( donkey ride, tractor ride and animal food) is around £50.

    Fantastic place will definitely return!
We’ve had the best day today! Travelled an hour to Smithills with my 1 and 4 year old and was totally worth the drive. So many animals to see and all kept in fantastic condition!! Two great play parks, donkey rides, tractor rides, you can watch the cows being milked, cafe and more. Lots of places for a picnic and the ice cream was the best I’ve ever tasted. We’ve spent a full day here and didn’t get bored. We’re dairy farmers ourselves so it’s great to see a place promote British farming and get the public involved! My only feedback would be that it would be great to have signs on the pens of the animals saying, for example, what breed of sheep it is and maybe a bit of info about it. Also in the reptiles house there were no signs saying what was in the enclosure. Thanks for a fantastic day out! We will definitely be back!

The cafe staff were rude and I had to wait half an hour for a kids ham sandwich to be told after waiting with a screaming kid that there was no ham left. Hungry and upset children and no compensation offered.

Excellent day out, great set up and the kids love the animals and donkey rides etc.

Only very small negative is the paths can become very muddy which is a bit of a pain with the pram but certainly doesn't take away from the day

It’s a nice day out
We couldn’t enjoy it to the full extent as the whole farm seemed to be overrun by wasps.
There were absolutely loads of them and my husband and son ended up being stung a few times. I noticed there were several other people who had also been stung too.
I know this isn’t necessarily a fault with the farm but it wasn’t enjoyable and not very safe for guests.
It was nice seeing all the baby calf’s and baby animals in pet corner
But we didn’t seem much more than that due to the wasps and having a baby in the pram I didn’t want to risk any more stings

We took our one year old grandson to Smithills Open Farm on a sunny Wednesday in term time so it was full of families with pre-school children. It was a lovely day out for him. He enjoyed seeing the animals and the play areas. There were plenty of places to picnic and the ice cream was yummy. An excellent venue for little ones and good value too.

A great place for young children. There are so many different animals to see and quite a lot can be petted. Going on the tractor ride and feeding the donkeys was good fun. As was feeding the sheep and goats. There is a big car park and there is a hill to climb it is accessible for wheelchairs and prams. The staff were knowledgeable in pets corner and the children had fun holding chicks, baby rabbits and guinea pigs.
My only gripe was that you needed to pay for the donkey rides back at the entrance. Why are you not told there about the charge or be abe book it on line. There are plenty of toilets and places to wash your hands. Great fun for the whole family. And the weather stayed fine. The paths around the farm are mostly tar paths.

Have been a couple times before but went this week with our 1 year old, and it was amazing. More animals and facilities (including the new creepy critters section and the owl lookout). For 10 quid for an adult, you get a lot - pets corner where you get to stroke baby donkeys and goats, and cuddle baby rabbits/guinea pigs and chicks, calf feeding, and loads of animals. Our little one loved the horses and sheep and all the calfs! The animals all seem well cared for and there's a great variety of activities and ways to engage with them. Would highly recommend for families.

Been here twice now with my wife and son. He's loved it everytime, especially the petting time where he gets to strike the animals.
He really enjoyed feeding them too.

Had a very enjoyable few hours here. There is a lot to do, an excellent choice of animals and kids activities. The talks were very well delivered by staff who knew their stuff and had a genuine passion for what they did. Credit also to the farm for keeping the food and drink prices reasonable when it would have been easy to hike them up in such a setting
