About
Visitors never forget their first breath-taking vision of Leeds Castle in Kent, rising majestically from the moat. With its riveting history serving six of England’s medieval queens, to its elaborate transformation into an elegant 20th-century retreat by Anglo-American heiress, Lady Baillie, Leeds Castle’s rich heritage has secured its place as one of the most visited historic attractions in Britain. There’s plenty for all to enjoy, from exploring the Princess Alexandra Gardens and savouring afternoon teas, to watching in awe as the Birds of Prey fly overhead and challenging the family to a game of adventure golf. For those looking to stay longer, Leeds Castle has a selection of picturesque staycation experiences, from the cosy Stable Courtyard and Maiden’s Tower, to Holiday Cottages perched along the water’s edge.

- TaylorpennyChelmsford, United Kingdom72 contributionsA beautiful experienceWe had booked tickets for the Christmas Lights Trail and were a bit worried as there were some negative comments but luckily for us it was brilliant. It was still very snowy and icy and bitterly cold but the trail had been cleared and well gritted. The lights were terrific, very impressive and we loved it. Great music choice to go with the lights (we had a quick dance at the dancefloor!). Half way round there were several food vans and we tried the mulled cider which was delicious. The candles at the castle itself were lovely and we enjoyed toasting our marshmallows over the firepits. The staff were great but I did feel a bit sorry for them as it was so cold. There were several babies in pushchairs but I wouldn't recommend it for them due to the cold. Thanks to all the staff who obviously worked so hard to put the display on, it was certainly worth it.Visited December 2022Written 16 December 2022
- Nigel G23 contributionsDisappointing Christmas LightsJust a bit lame. Some very nice set pieces. The neon tree and flame pots in the castle garden were great and the music atmospheric. However there was no where near enough made of the landscape itself. What makes Bedgbury so good is the way they bring the set pieces together by lighting the trees and landscape and this was largely absent . The refreshment huts had nice food snd drink, but not much character and not enough seating. We had the benefit of a crisp snowy evening, but even with this we came away thinking it was an opportunity missed. There was a LOT of dark park between the lights. All in all is was poor compared with Bedgbury and we won't be rushing back.Visited December 2022Written 17 December 2022
- Virginie PRamsgate, United Kingdom148 contributionsExcellent visitWe have just visited Leeds Castle and we have been amazed by its new look and the new way the visit is. It is very nice to see how the castle looked at the time of Lady Baillie and how the castle have been changed and transformed to accommodate new items which belonged to her. We loved the Christmas trees which complemented each room, but the room we preferred was the Birds room with all the lovely displays of birds on the walls, the trees with birds and Christmas decorations on them and the birds songs in the background. The visit is different than previous times we visited, but we really liked the fact that we can see how the castle was when it was an entertaining place for Lady Baillie. All the staff we talked to were very friendly and happy to answered our questions. Thank you for making our visit a perfect day out!Thank you for this review. We do get a lot of feedback about the castle and we always endeavour to make sure visitors go home feeling the way you did. - carol1 contributionLeeds Castle Christmas LightsJust returned from visiting Leeds Castle Lights. We were a party of 4 and all agreed that it was a lovely evening. The light installations were very good and the music gave it a wonderful atmosphere. The displays on the castle walls were particularly good along with the fire garden. I dont often leave reviews, but felt compelled to leave one, if only to counter all the bad ones that have been left, which quite honestly I dont understand.. I honestly think people expect too much sometimes..Thank you so much for the review. Most of the feedback we receive on the night and via our social media channels has been overwhelmingly positive so it is lovely to read this here too. We are pleased that you all enjoyed your visit and thank you for supporting Leeds Castle.Written 23 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 22 December 2022
- Dave W59 contributionsLeeds Castle Christmas LightsI read all the bad reviews in the days and weeks leading up and had I had the option to cancel I probably would have based on what I had read, I'm glad I didn't... Compared to Bedgebury it doesn't have the backdrop of trees lit up which is pretty spectacular but it makes up for this with the amount of stand alone lights around and the kids absolutely loved it. I saw the music was criticised on other reviews too. No idea why to be honest! A mixture of festive pop hits, festive film music and some classical which fit right in to the mood. Don't miss the Castle if you're going where it's £1.80 for a marshmallow. Take a pair of gloves to use when roasting in the fire pit though. The one thing it was lacking from previous years was the fairground rides. With both Bedgebury and the old Leeds Castle Christmas event having it we just expected it to be there but unfortunately not. I guess for many this will be a big positive for many though! The car park was extremely well marshalled too and a bit of a queue to get in but for a good reason.Hello Dave, Thank you so much for the lovely comments regarding your recent visit to the Leeds Castle Christmas Lights. We have put a lot of effort in and so many guests have given us great feedback verbally and via our social media channels. A review like yours makes us all so happy and your feedback is also appreciated so we can make sure we continue to put on a good show in the future.Written 26 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Written 23 December 2022
- Lindsay3 contributionsExcellent experience at Leeds Castle LightsWent to The Christmas Lights event at Leeds Castle, having been to several others in the last few years. Leeds Castle is one of the very best. Very classy, spaced out, different designers, well chosen music. Food and drink stalls could be better balanced out en route from start, middle and end. Excellent and well worth visiting.Thank you for the great review. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed the light show.Written 26 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 December 2022
- Andie H1 contributionGreat place, only real value for money if you go more than once. Take a picnic.Great place to visit but very expensive: good value if you can visit multiple times a year (your ticket is valid for as many visits as you like in one year). The displays in the castle change quite often and the gardens sometimes have sculptors etc. So it’s worth coming back. The falconry centre is great: go to a flying display and a “meet the birds” session. We’ve held eagles and stroked owls and it doesn’t cost any extra. Playgrounds are really good. Kept the kids entertained for hours. Take a picnic: the food selection isn’t great especially if you have allergies. We’ve been three times and all the cafes seem to run out of food very early. We spent over £30 on a couple of barely edible vegan sausage rolls (they’d run out of everything else), 3 packets of crisps, some coffees and the worst doughnuts I’ve ever had. (Raw inside, soaked in grease outside and hardly any sugar). I’d understand if it were late but we got to the cafe at 1pm! There are 3 food outlets, all selling unhealthy, not very nice and incredibly over priced food. Queues are also huge and you don’t know if they’ll have anything left by the time you get served. Our last visit on a fairly quiet day was an hour wait at the main “restaurant”. If you go at Christmas, you get kicked out early if you don’t have a “Christmas lights” ticket. We didn’t mind as we were on our third visit of the year but I met a guy in the cafe queue who’d paid a fortune for a one off visit, then found he could only stay for a few hours.Thank you for the review. We have been opening earlier than usual for day visitors so we can close a little earlier to give us the time we need to set up the evening light show event. We certainly don't "kick out" our wonderful guests. We just ask that our visitors stick to the opening and closing times which are on our website and listed in our visitor maps and guides as you enter. Your comments about the food and drink options will be shared with the catering manager so they can make sure everyone has the best dining experience possible. We are pleased to read that you enjoy the falconry displays, the bird of prey centre and play areas.Written 27 December 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2022
- Paul H1 contributionThis place used to be so much betterThis was always a must visit venue when I came back home because the rich history of the castle was celebrated across all of the rooms in the castle. Sadly, now the castle feels very modern and sterile, only "celebrating" the times of Lady Bailey. I cannot remember seeing any references in any of the rooms to previous occupants including Henry VIII! I also LOVED checking out the exotic birds in the aviaries that have now gone. For me, personally, the castle has lost alot of its charm that is its rich history of occupants.Thank you for the review. We do mention Henry VIII in particular in the Queens with Means video experience with Katherine of Aragon narrating. We are sorry to hear that you miss the avaries, they haven't been here for over a decade but our Falconry and Wildlife team have extended our bird of prey centre behind the maze which is very popular.Written 1 January 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2022

A beautiful walk, beautiful lights and most importantly for me the music that went with it. It all went perfectly and the songs at the castle haunting and perfect. Would definitely recommend.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a great review. - little foxesMaidstone, United Kingdom19 contributionsA very satisfying timeWe visited on a day which was quite cloudy and cold. We arrived just before 10am. Walked into the grounds and had a coffee in the courtyard cafe. After which we walked through Lady Baillie's Garden always and enjoyable experience. After which we walked back to view the Castle which opens from 10.30am. Our recommendation is to go early, start with the gardens and finish with the Castle, which avoids the crowds.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2023

We visited Leeds Castle as a birthday treat for us both. The grounds were getting ready for the Christmas Light spectacular £18pp. However due the cold (we went early) after a nice hot coffee, we decided to tour the castle. You must see the Narnia - The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe event. The display teams have produced the most inspiring spaces. Absolutely spectacular. You follow the route and visit most of the important scenes from the book. A must see. On now until 1 January 2024. A treat for the whole family. Great for couples and singles. You can take photos of yourselves sitting within fabulous scenes. Don't miss it.

I visited a Narnia Christmas at Leeds castle with my grandchildren. It was a magical experience, the actors all interacted with the children. The Snow Queen was particularly good.
The restaurant food was excellent and the staff very helpful. We can’t wait to return in the Spring and Summer. Very good value

Thank you for the review. We are saddened to read that your experience was not in line with the overwhelming positive feedback we have received so far. We do have Christmas trees aplenty in our castle rooms which are looking very festive. Our tickets do grant free repeat visit for one year so hopefully you can visit again in the near future.

We were refused entry to the castle as it closed at 2.30pm due to the light trail all in small print on the website. The light trail was not worth the ticket price plus there was an additional fee for parking. It was pouring with rain and nothing to do from 2.30pm to 4pm because the castle was closed unexpectedly waste of money and no consideration given to the visitors

Thank you for the review, Our opening and closing times are listed on our website, in onsite signage and our visitor maps available across our estate. At the weekend and school holidays we have our catering festive hub with the castle backdrop on our Cedar Lawn. This has undercover seating available and at those times it is open from midday - 3.45pm for our day guests and beyond for our light trail visitors to use. Our visitors are so important to us and we are disappointed our usual warm welcome didn't come across to you. Please email us if you would like to discuss this further.

So so disappointing this year . They seem to have forgotten the majority of the lights this year .
Took us 40 minutes to walk round this year and honestly could not wait for it to finish . To put into context last year took 2 and half hours to walk around as there was so much to see but this year was 40 minutes .
Please be aware do not try the mulled wine as it was the nastiest cheap rubbish that could be found.
I don't like to leave negative reviews but I honestly feel conned this year and I have had more fun looking at the neighbours gardens

We had one of the wonderful experiences we could have had. Celebrating our Ruby Wedding Anniversary with our large family. We took the 8 pm slot on the 2nd Dec. It was freezing cold which only added to the the magic. All the staff we met were freezing cold, as we were, but each one was smiling, helpful and friendly. The lights and music was spectacular, worth every penny. Anyone who moans about this must be incredibly had to please. We as a family loved every magical moment, it captured the real essence of art, music, joy, love and the festive season. It was a very good time to go as it was not over crowded. Lovely walk around the grounds for the Christmas Light Trail- we all loved the light displays and the music as well. The installation at the end with the string lights you walk through was a particular highlight.
However, buy a cup of mulled cider at your own risk... The van was by the marshmallow toasting pits and the cider was scalding hot. Couldn't hold the cup comfortably as the cup itself was nearly full to the brim of the lava-like liquid. No lids were provided (I heard someone else ask for them and the man said they didn't have any), and between there not being a lid, a dodgy cup that didn't do anything to protect your hand from the heat, and the fact that the cup was full- the inevitable happened and my hand was covered. I have a few blisters on the back of my hand now and walked around the rest of the lights feeling quite shaken.
I did go back and make the people working there aware- surely they can temperature control that better? there is no need to be handing out drinks that hot, and if you are, do so sensibly and with better cups with lids etc.

The castle is beautifully themed each year and is stunning. So are the grounds .
So it is strange that there is not a single festive option on the menu of the castle view restaurant.
Clearly Chef Grinch is running the kitchen !

We went to Leeds Castle in the first day of the Narnia exhibition. We enjoyed both castle and exhibition but when we went to the restaurant for s hot lunchtime meal we were told the restaurant stopped taking God orders at 12.15. We were aware it would close at 1.15 to allow the staff to prepare for a wedding reception. I did query this but was told it was necessary to close the Rothes early to give staff time to prepare for the reception.
My view is that arranging a wedding reception on the first day of a new exhibition was absolutely ridiculous especially when there were so many visitors. Many other people grumbled about this saying that the whole affair should have been planned much better.
I really will think twice about visiting Leeds Castle afain

I did not see any during my visit. In fact, our bus had to park across the road and we walked up. The castle itself is more of a home than a fortress so certainly no bikes would be allowed inside even to just park them.

To answer my own question, yes it does. The Christmas market does not require a separate ticket, except for the one you use to enter the castle. Therefore an annual ticket is fine.
