We depict the history of fire-fighting through the ages, with particular emphasis on Hertfordshire. We have two nineteenth-century hand manual fire appliances, a 1896 Shand-Mason horse-drawn steam-powered fire engine, a 1937 Leyland fire appliance which was based at St Albans and a 1942 Dennis trailer pump used during the Second World War. We have uniforms that can be tried on and equipment that can be handled. There is also a large photographic display and resource library. Entry is free, donations welcome as the museum in voluntarily run by ex-fire service officers. Our Open Days are on one Saturday per month (1pm to 4pm), from April to September, dates on Watford Museum website. Please be aware that we are based on an operational fire station with very limited parking.

This is only open once a month but well worth a visit. Volunteers are very knowledgable & it has a lot of local information to view.

We recently visited watford fire brigade museum when they hosted a fun day. It was great to get up close to vintage fire engines and see old photographs of fire fighters in action. The museum is small but holds lots of history from decades of fire fighters uniforms, helmets, hoses, fire buckets and information. We had a great time and... More

my borther in law is fireman in hertfordshire and told us about this museum so we took a drive and checked it out, its small but very interesting, the family enjoyed seeing the old engines and hearing all about how fires used to be dealt with.

Not very big but packed with interesting information. Fascinating to see all the old equipment and learn the history. I took my then three year old son who loves fire engines. He was so excited that he got to sit in one and wear the helmet! The guys running it are friendly and very knowledgable. It's just a shame that... More

Not huge, but very interesting. The staff are volunteers or ex firemen and they know their history. Well worth a stop by if you have any kind of interest in fire fighting or history.

Not vast but everything here is delightful especially, of course, the old engine and equipment. A perfect specialist little museum and a perfect vehicle for highlighting not only the role of the brigade down the decades but also to make people aware of the safety issues. Wish it were open more often. We came here a about a year ago.... More

The Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service's Museum is housed in the grounds of Watford Fire Station at the bottom of Watford High Street and is run and manned by two dedicated curators, Roger and Ian, who devote a great deal of their time to try to preserve the heritage of Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service. A visit to the Museum... More
