- AlinaRC1,820 contributionsAutumn colour at CheslynThe gardens at Cheslyn still look really colourful in late November. They are very well maintained, and show a real knowledge of plants. Its not a huge garden, 3.5 acres, but seems bigger with lots of different areas - a large lawn in front of the house with birch trees and heathers. Around the house the grasses look their best, along with some late flowering salvias. Behind the house is a pond and rock garden. The largest area is a woodland garden, which in late November is full of colour. The maples are still very vibrant, while the larger woodland trees including the oaks are showing signs of turning. It takes about an hour to look around, but you can easily spend longer relaxing. In terms of facilities there is a toilet, but no refreshments available.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 November 2023
- AlinaRC1,820 contributionsSpring arrives at CheslynSpring is very much under way at Cheslyn. The Daffodils are fully out, the camellias look lovely in the woodland, and the magnolias are in fully bloom on the lawn. The magnolias in particular look good this year without any frost damage. The last of the earlier spring flowers are hanging on - the hellebores by the house and a very last few snowdrops in the woodland. The garden has distinct areas with a formal pond and rock garden; woodland; and lawns in front of the house. It only takes an hour to walk around, but its easy to spend much longer. Especially recommend spending some time at the wild bird feeder. With a little patience you can see Siskin (a bit like a greenfinch) and a blackcap (although the female has more of a brown cap), as well as blackbirds, song thrush, great tit, blue tit, robin, etc. In terms of facilities there is a toilet open the same hours as the garden, but no refreshments available. It opens at 9am and evening closure depends on when sunset is, and is clearly displayed at the entrance. The house is hired out from time to time to community groups and sometimes has public access - like an art show.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 March 2024

Beautiful plant combinations all around and wonderful mature rhododendrons and trees. Everywhere we looked were gorgeous flowers covered in happily buzzing bees. A hidden oasis near the city, a must visit for plant lovers.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024

So pleased to have found this hidden gem of a garden, online last week. Free entry, it's such a wonderful and peaceful location, with so many different flowers and woodland plants to walk around and see. There's even a fish pond and a bird aviary! My mum and I went at 11am on Saturday August 1st, and managed to get a parking space in the very small car park (probably only fits about 8?). I spent an hour taking lots of brilliant photos in the glorious sunshine. A must see for garden lovers!

The gardeners at Cheslyn do a wonderful job in keeping the gardens in such good condition with lots to see all year around. At the end of February it is full of colour with the snowdrops still out, heather, cyclamens and hellebores (Christmas rose). The early daffodils and camellias are just starting. The highlight though are the drifts of crocus near the entrance and in the woodland. There are some more formal areas including a pond and flower beds and beyond is more natural woodland area. Do take a moment to see the birds coming and going to the feeder. Usual woodland birds - chaffinches, coal tit, great tit - but we were lucky to also see some Siskin. You can easily spend an afternoon here but to look around thoroughly takes about an hour. There are plenty of benches to sit on and relax (and a toilet for visitors to use).

The gardeners are doing a wonderful job to maintain and improve Cheslyn Gardens. You could visit every week and see something different. Right now - early February are snowdrops, crocus, witchhazel, wintersweet with the hellebores and winter jasmine just coming along.
It takes about an hour to wander around, but you can easily stay longer and relax. There are several birdfeeders an its a good spot to see woodland birds - nuthatches, woodpeckers, treecreepers, goldcrests as well as more common robins, blue tits, great tits etc.
By the entrance are large lawns with mature trees; behind the house is a formal pond and rockery. Continue through the rockery to find the flowering witchhazels. The woodland area at the back of the garden has many early spring flowering shrubs - wintersweet, winterjasmine & camellias, which are only just starting.
On the practical side there are no refreshments and the house/ greenhouse are not open. There is a toilet for visitors to use. The gardens are open till 5pm in February.

Really lovely little hidden gem. I only found out about this place via a google search of the local area. I’m so glad I found it! We went when it was a little cold however it was still really enjoyable. I cannot wait to go back in the summer.

A true hidden gem. A very pleasant surprise in the heart of Watford. Tranquil setting with enough things of interest to keep anyone happy for an hour or two.
With no car parking or admission charges, this is very rare place, indeed.

People live in Watford for years and never get around to visiting Cheslyn. Those of us in the know come as often as we can. The garden changes with the seasons and every week there is something else to enjoy. In early July, the summer borders are in full bloom. Many of the shrubs on the lawn are in flower.
It takes about an hour to walk around, but you can easily stay for much longer. Its not huge, but divided up into areas to seem much larger than it is. There are more formal areas around the lawn and pond. Further in, is a more natural, woodland area. The gardens are well maintained, by someone who knows about plants. The gardeners do a great job.
There are no facilities, but there is a toilet. In July it is open until 8pm.

Beautiful garden in the middle of Nascot Wood Road. Such a relaxing place, perfect for short of long stroll or a dog walk. It has a bird sanctuary and a small pond with carp in it.

Lovely gardens with plenty of beautiful plants and flowers plus an Avery and fish pond. There are many paths to follow to enjoy the wooded area behind the open garden area. Very relaxing and well worth a visit. With limited parking, going by foot might be preferable.

I am quite worried about parking there. Is there any near alternative in case if main parking is full?
Written 5 June 2020
Cassiobury Park and Watford Junction Station car park are both a 5min drive way. Would then be a 25min walk over though. :/ If you get to Cheslyn House before 11am you should get a parking space fine.

Is there any open space to have a picnic?
Written 4 June 2020
Hi there is an area of grass suitable for picnic’s. It’s not massive though bearing the current social distancing rules. Pop down and have a try. It’s a nice place. Cheers

Hello, do you hire the house and gardens out for events at all? I live locally and love the gardens so looking forward to hearing back from you.
Written 21 September 2018
Hi, the gardens are run by the council, it would be worth asking them, another answer below has their number. However we live opposite and can’t recall them being used for a private function for at least the last 10 years. It’s a lovely venue and it would be nice to see it used more. Good luck. Cheers Kevin

Would I be able to bring my assistance dog with me? She is currently training & not yet fully qualified.
Written 10 September 2018
I would say yes, as people walk their dogs in the wooded areas.

Where were you? Cheslyn has no food outlet! You need to bring your own refreshments.
Written 27 March 2018
Do you never go anywhere for the sheer fun and excitement of it without expecting refreshments?
Written 31 May 2018
Not sure there is a cafe, we went on a weekend day. The house was not open when we visited, maybe only used for wedding function etc? The garden is nice and compact, with a play area for children. The wood walking area is good and a bit hidden surprise.
Went by car, so don't know public transport directions. Good local park I would say but not very big quite small, only good for picnic for a few hours not whole day. A tiny escape!
Written 12 September 2016
Yes - it's a small park/large garden, and we have taken our own picnic. Not all parks need to be huge, and this is part of the charm of visiting somewhere like this, which may provide inspiration for you to create your own dream garden to escape into. That's the point.
