Tonight saw a rendition of Around the Horn by a travelling troupe. The Loft provides excellent semi professional entertainment of exceptional quality. Smallish comfortable theatre. Good seating, excellent bar and interval snacks. Administration efficient and the whole place welcoming. Close to station and parking. Better than Stratford and better value. A good night out.…

The Loft is a super little theatre run by volunteers and supporters of the arts. The volunteers are charming and run a small bar with tea and coffee on offer also. My daughter was acting in Dangerous Liaisons which was extremely entertaining and the dedication of these amateur dramatics is commendable.…

One of the thrilling things about being mesmerized by excellence in the theatre is the total and immersive experience that elevates the mind and prods the soul. Leamington's Loft Theatre's production of "The Hangman" was such a production. Needless to say, we tend to categorize theatres and their work: The RSC should be excellent every time (it is not). West End Theatre, as well as Broadway's productions, should be world-class. However, having seen a couple of hundred of them, I find commercial work 'hit or miss'. This small local rep company, when all is considered, should not have been so undeniably superb. However, what is clear from this production is that one was watching actors at the apex of their game. Sure, it helps to be working on a play by the brilliant, irreverent Martin McDonagh (whose "Pillowman" on Broadway was definitive). It helps that "Hangman" was directed by the gifted and visionary Tom O'Conner. It also helps that the Loft assembled what is arguably their very best artists: the inimitable Jeremy Heynes, the comedic and versatile Phil Reynolds (himself, an actor of a hundred or so credits) and the uber-funny Gus MacDonald, whose priceless cameo was worth the price of admission alone. However, to single out a performer would be trite. The strength of "Hangman", which I saw on its final performance, was down to the collaboration of a company whose status as one of the very best in the Midlands is confirmed. It will be tough to better this, however, I am enthused and excited about seeing the forthcoming "Les Liaisons Dangeruses", to be directed by Sue Moore (an actress of towering ability in her own right). For now, however, even though I saw this play nearly three weeks ago, somehow, I cannot forget it. I never shall. …
