Owned by the serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, through the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancaster Castle is a wealth of English history.

Since being established by the Romans the castle has been a home to monarchs, a place of trial and execution, and a working prison right up until 2012. Still a crown court, the majority of the castle is now open to the public for the first time in over 1,000 years.

Since its opening in 2013, the Castle is gradually developing its offer of tours and events, as well as offering a cafe and gift shop in the grounds.

I have lived in or near Lancaster all my life, I never thought that I would have been able to actually go inside our castle as it was always a prison. Now the powers that be have opened it to the public with guided tours. There's also a lovely little cafe. It's always been a lovely walk around the outside.... More

I have visited many castles before but have never been in one which has been extended the way this one has. Many castles have been renovated within the original walls and this one has a programme of renovations which have jept the site wind and water tight. It has also, over many centuries, had additional buildings added. The most astonishing fact... More

Some friends from the US came to visit and I took them to the Cathedral and then to the Castle. The tour as ever was great and my friends were dumbstruck. It is well worth taking the tour and now that the prison is closed, the tour is even better. Highly recommended.

Completely unplanned we took a tour of Lancaster Castle last weekend and I can't stop talking about it! So unexpected - castle dating back hundreds of years, tower as old as the tower of London. Functioning courtroom - right inside the castle! and a PRISON till 2012! So one minute you are in a beautiful courtroom surrounded by shields and... More

Thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Lancaster Castle. Our guide had a mixed age group from young children to adults and managed to pitch the tour so it catered for all of us. He had the right amount of humour and knowledge to keep us all engaged and entertained throughout the 90 minute visit. Well worth the £8 tour price.

Visited Lancaster castle this weekend, Took the guided tour with Graham as our guide, He was excellent. Had an amazing amount of knowledge mixed with a splattering of humour which kept us entertained for 90 minutes. The castle itself is very good and it was amazing to find working courtrooms and a prison ( now disused but working until a... More
