- Fazlurrehman AnsariLondon, United Kingdom1,602 contributionsA Ver Good Day Out With Family.A very good family day out. Site is hilly so we started with train ride. Lovely scenes both sides. Monkeys run was amazing. Animals seems very well looked after. Signage for guidance towards different enclosures of animals is visible. The Castle visit was great. Very quite and peaceful atmosphere. Panoramic view of city from top was mesmerising. Best place to take photos. Short journey of Ski lift was good and our grand children had multiple ride as they have seen monkeys running. Staff patrolling was minimum. Food prices are bit high and quality is also not up to mark. But overall it was a good trip. We enjoyed.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- McRae y16 contributionsTecton-tastic day outMy 10 year old and me were the first visitors in on a drizzly day. It was half term for us, but school was still in for local kids. Having Chester Zoo on my doorstep, it was the Tectons that drew me here however, the animal experience at Dudley is different and special in its own right. Lemur forest was a stand out. We loved that. It’s possible to get closer to the animals here than at other zoos I have been to. That includes the tiger, flamingos and orangutans. Despite the dreary weather we saw everything. The Tectons didn’t disappoint. There are orientation boards by them showing historical photos with the original animals in situ. This gives a good feel for how the design was intended. The zoo could maybe have considered how to maintain the clear lines of the structures a little more - some aspects are obscured by other structures, posters or wheely bins. I think to avoid the accusations of being ‘shabby’ some explanation of the repairs in progress would be useful too. The new entrance is labelled as having a Tecton exhibition however I couldn’t see anything there though I was a bit footsore by that point so I didn’t enquire further so maybe it was there? Apart from the animals and the Tectons we enjoyed the land train and absolutely loved the restored chair lift. It was quiet so we rode several times. A climb up the castle keep to admire the views made for a really varied day out for my child and me. October and November has an offer of a free child place with a paying adult so it felt like we got excellent value for money too. A great day out.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 October 2023
- David I B1 contributionDisabled beware of attractionThe zoo itself is very good, obviously this time of year you got to expect the Animals to be lethargic. One point I must stress and it's very important if you are travelling here as a disabled person, DO NOT hire a mobility scooter or take your own, there are many areas that are not accessible, including the castle, a fully charged scooter will last around 40 minutes here with the hills. It is however a great family attraction that will keep the kids busy for a few hours. Cafe/restaurant is a little expensive, best take your own picnic.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 December 2023
- Millie BoonEngland, United Kingdom248 contributionsWe Had A Great TimeNever been before despite living 30 mins away. Visited with my two boys aged 11 and 12 and I am glad we did. I would definitely visit a zoo again at this time of year. No crowds, which was great! We followed the map and saw everything in about 4 hours. Our favourites were the impressive tigers, the baby orangutans and the spider monkies. The man with the glasses who did the orangutan talk was very informative and it was interesting. People complaining about crumbling buildings obviously don't know about Tecton. So have a read before you go. However, I think the zoo should have more signage about this and explain about the funding to restore and what is going on. Other signage about the animals was great. We took a packed lunch, so didn't use any of the eating facilities. The zoo was spotless, with plenty of bins dotted around. The castle was a little disappointing. I think more facts and information would be useful. However I would recommend a visit to the zoo as we had a lovely time looking about.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 January 2024
- David M353 contributionsAwesome historical (and spooky) siteI have never visited the castle before but went on a ghost hunt on Saturday night with my wife with a company called Haunting Nights. By dark, the castle and its surroundings are beautiful. We visited the cottage and the undercroft and experienced a few spooky goings on which couldn’t be explained. The castle is well-maintained and the Kirsty who opened up was lovely as was everyone in attendance: guests and organisers. We really enjoyed the night and will be back again either on another ghost hunt or to visit the site by daylight and see some of the animals at the zoo.Thank you for taking the time to leave your lovely feedback. - Lucy JStourport on Severn, United Kingdom1 contribution5 * dudley zoo!Definitely the best time of year to go , the weather might be cold but the walking keeps you warm , we had thermals under our jeans and hoodies, it felt like we had our own private zoo , exhibits are excellent and close ups of most animals via the indoor viewing areas (I guess they were a bit chilly) were great a treat. The castle takes you back in time and there is a creepy crawly walk through experience within the castle walls , the giraffe keeper was very informative and happy to share her knowledge with us , loved the cheese and onion pastie from the cafe, literally had the best January day ! Well done Dudley zoo ! XMany thanks for your lovely feedback, it is much appreciated. - Tracey BTelford, United Kingdom690 contributionsNostalgic visitLots of renovation going on to improve the zoo. A place I visited so many times as a child and with my own children. The iconic entrance is now unused and you enter from the car park. Plenty of families there on a cool winter day. The old chairlift was out of use. The cafe was closed and the main restaurant was busy. So many animals seemed to be alone, very sad. The shop is very nice though with good quality gifts. Children still seem to love the zoo and it's well worth a visit. Many thanks for your feedback, it is appreciated. As the Zoo is open every day apart from Christmas Day, we need to undertake essential maintenance during our quieter winter months but try to keep inconvenience to our visitors to a minimum. - Jessica SWolverhampton, United Kingdom49 contributionsOur favourite local ZooToday we had a brilliant day out with a 3 year old and a baby. There is a huge variety of animals, all very well looked after. Our favourites were the giraffes, Arctic foxes, penguins, monkeys and chimps! We also loved the reptile house and inside the play barn! Really interesting creepy crawlies in here and adorable giant rabbits!! We loved the pretend cows udders to have a go at milking, fantastic! There is plenty of children's parks too - I recommend the parks next to the play barn. The land train is fantastic, we decided to catch the train to get to the top and then worked our way down which was a great choice. The little fair ground rides near the entrance/exit are great fun for the little ones too. It's a favourite zoo of ours and we have been here numerous times since my daughter was a baby and will keep coming back! The only suggestion I do have for the zoo is, it would be great to have picnics indoors in the colder weather!! I understand the restaurant needs to make money however I'm sure they would still make plenty of money as we would still buy hot drinks and maybe a cake or icecream even with our own picnic otherwise plenty of nice outdoor picnic areas. Many thanks for your feedback, it is appreciated. - wendy iLiverpool, United Kingdom323 contributionsGreat experienceI visited Half term weekend, I travelled from Merseyside and the traffic was poor on the day we were booked to visit. We arrived at approximately 230pm but last entry is at 2pm but the lady at reception was so kind and considerate. I explained what had happened. She allowed us entry. My daughter is special needs so would have been quite difficult to deal with if we were turned away. She wouldn’t have understood. I have found Dudley Castle and zoo ever so accommodating to those with needs which I really appreciate. We were booked in quickly and even got a free return. Even though we were late we still got to see quite a few animals as they get put away at 3pm which is really early so I was a little taken aback by the last entry at 2pm. We got the land train back down to the bottom and the little one had a play on the play frames. We had a good hour in the location and were gone by 1530hrs as they close completely at 1630hrs. I highly recommend this zoo for variety of animals, the close proximity you get to the animals, value and kindness of staff. Also there are talks by the castle regarding its history which is interesting I come from time to time but if this was my local zoo, I would definitely have an annual pass. We have annual passes at Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari. This is definitely one of the best. Give it a go, never feel ripped off, ever so reasonably priced especially compared to Chester zoo. - JoolesStaffsCheadle, United Kingdom16 contributionsZoo keeper experienceFor our 16 year olds birthday, he did a zoo keeper experience. We arrived just before opening at 10am, and in the shop were met by the first keeper of the day. We were then accompanied and show around all day. All the keepers were very friendly, very accommodating and, as you’d expect , knowledgeable. The lady zoo keeper for the geleda was especially passionate and keen to share her knowledge and insights. Got to feed juice to a couple of orangutan’s, lots of fish to penguins and some fresh meat to the tigers from very close up! It was a full day, right up till closing. Our youngest was also accommodated and invited to meet and stroke the tapir, very kind and considerate. Yes it’s expensive, but it’s a great experience and goes toward caring for amazing animals, great and small. Thank you Dudley ZooMany thanks for your feedback, it is appreciated. We went to the zoo after I bought the Feed a Big Cat Experience as a Christmas Present for my partner in 2019 but weren’t able to go sooner due to the pandemic. Fortunately, we were able to extend the dates on our experience and it was definitely worth the wait.
The zoo is quite run down in places with some of the main enclosures in desperate need of some renovations and TLC. The entrance to the zoo is also unsightly and somewhat off putting. But this didn’t ruin our experience. Some of the newer enclosures are much better and if some money could be invested into the older enclosures, it would be a really great attraction.
The zoo is quite steep and hilly in places which some may find difficult. The food is also overpriced but not unpleasant. The castle is a great addition with well maintained gardens for a pleasant walk and exploring around the castle.
The zoo was fairly quiet throughout most of our visit which meant that we had no issue being able to see all of the animals, which we have found to be the case at some of the bigger and busier zoos in the country.
The lemur, wallaby and penguin walk throughs were great features and allowed for some amazing photo opportunities. The bird house was good too and you can buy pots of nectar for £1.50 before you go in - but perhaps give this a miss if you’re scared of birds or don’t want them landing on you.
The Feed a Big Cat Experience was absolutely incredible and I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about getting this as a gift for someone or if you want to do it yourself. We were lucky to have the choice between Tigers, Lions or Snow Leopards so we went for the Tigers (choice isn’t guaranteed through depending on the welfare of the animals on the day of your visit). The keeper was knowledgeable, informative, friendly and welcoming and was happy to answer any of our questions and take pictures of us whilst we fed the Tigers.
Overall, we had a lovely visit and would probably visit again although it was the experience that made the day for us. The zoo needs to invest some money into its enclosures for it to be a better attraction, although this may be difficult following the pandemic.

Having been to Dudley from Suffolk several times and never quite made it to the zoo we were determined to go and visit and support them after the lock-down. We were not disappointed ! So much thought into the layout and care for visitors and animals safety alike. We have visited many other zoos and a lot of them far more expensive but would rate this amongst the best. Our 2 granddaughters 12 & 11 had a great time. We stayed for most of the day. The train would have been helpful, especially for my wife but even without it we managed to negotiate all the steep slopes. Took a picnic and thoroughly enjoyed our day. We have another 8 grandkids so can see a lot more visits in the future. Well done to all the staff.

We visited Dudley zoo yesterday.
It was a family visit taking 6 children.....so quite expensive.
Unfortunately we were quite disappointed half of the animals were not available to see. Several areas were taped off.
The lemur walk had no lemurs walking ....several children's play areas were zoned off too.
The cafe was closed for hot food and drinks
This was apparently due to Covid ....however the tiny fair rides were open which cost extra money.
I feel that this needs to be put on the website or reduce price of tickets.

We have published on our web site the restrictions we have had to put in place which form part of the terms and conditions you will have read before completing your ticket purchase, so we are sorry to hear of your disappointment. Going forward, when guidelines allow, we are opening more and more of our facilities and we do hope before long to be able to open the site completely.

Staff are nice and the grounds are big, with a decent amount of animals. However, the grounds and buildings are in desperate need of care and renovation. It’s clear the zoo is in need of money and therefore we were quite disappointed with our visit.
We enjoyed seeing all the animals, although the tigers look desperately sad.

We arrived as soon as the zoo opened at 10:00am, looks like they have extensive parking available. We precooked our car parking thinking it might be cheaper, it isn’t, it’s £3.50 on the day anyway which I think is very reasonable, they give you a metal token to put in the machine.
There is plenty to see at the zoo, including Asiatic Lions, Flamingos (which are nice and pink), Sea Lions, Monkeys, Red Pandas, Giraffes and plenty of others. I would definitely recommend the Lorakeet Lookout, a pot of nectar is £1.50, they will land on you without a pot, but will quickly fly onto someone else who has one, so definitely worth spending the bit of change.
There are a couple of play areas for the kids, climbing frames with slides, plus the fun fair, although it’s only small with a few rides, the kids loved it. It’s operated by a third party, tokens are 15 for £10, most rides are 1 or 2 tokens per go, apart from the dodgems, they’re 3 tokens per go.
The zoo is kept clean and tidy throughout and all the animals look to be very well cared for. The castle grounds are nice, just mind the steps when walking up the castle turret, they’re winding and concrete, with not much room for people going up to pass with people going down, bit of a wall hugging moment lol
There is a train ride which takes you from one side of the zoo to the other as well, they run frequently throughout the day, there isn’t a queuing system, so everyone kind of pushes each other to get on like it’s a mad rush, but put your shoulder in and you’ll get a spot!
The gift shop is expensive, and of course you exit through the gift shop. There’s plenty of cheaper tat to buy in there, my daughters bought a slinky each which of course broke before we got home LOL.

Came here on a rainy day before inclosures were opened, however we managed to see many animals and enjoyed the one way system allowing us to see everything the zoo had to offer. Had tons of species and enjoyed exploring the castle also. Would defo recommend visiting this zoo to support the animals and will return to go indoors soon.

I have been to the zoo several times and would never complain about the attraction itself (why there is still 3 stars). We visited the zoo as our first trip out after the pandemic began, thinking that the large space and open air would be the safest option. However, those options have been taken away by creating a one-way system that now encourages everyone who enters to follow the same route and corrals you into seeing the same animals in the same order.
Social distancing wasn’t happening at all. I have never had people standing up my back on a regular visit but we had to literally dodge people to maintain even 1m and move from places where my children were enjoying themselves because people were so close. They have restricted numbers in the shop, yet the queue outside waiting to get in were up each other’s backs. No need to social distance in the shop then because if you could catch COVID then you’ve already caught it!
Why are the humid (lovely germ breeding ground) reptile house and castle creatures exhibits open but the outdoor animal walkthroughs closed?? Why have staff dotted around if they aren’t going to enforce anything? The only positive was the number of hand sanitising stations they have, they are practically every few enclosures. We forgot ourselves a couple of times and touched the railings but were able to then cleanse our hands. Not once did I see anyone else use them.
I know a lot of the problem during our visit was the ignorance of the visitors. But the zoo should also understand why they put measures in place (because there is still a need to!) and actually enforce them. It didn’t seem any less busy than a normal Saturday. The one way system is pointless, if I could have moved around freely I would have found it much easier to avoid crowds. I won’t be visiting again until the crisis is over, and if you have taken the pandemic seriously then I would say this isn’t the place for you yet.

Visit in December to see santa.
Struggled to local the zoo as sat nav took us to the college, and sign posts were not very clear. Upon arrival in the zoo car park I was still questioning whether we were in the right place, as there was no big enterance sign.
We visited on the Friday before Christmas, the zoo was very quiet, and sadly it rained all day.
But the little train took us up to the castle. Our santa visit was brilliant, santa spent time talking to each of our children in turn. It was a lovely experience.
We visited the cafe for lunch, quite pricey but I guess average for a zoo. But the staff were helpful and friendly.
The zoo had some lovely animals; sea lions begging for attention, red pandas cute and fluffy, we saw them being fed.
The zoo us also very hilly.
Overall our visit was lovely, but due to the rain (which the zoo and staff can't change) we all got cold and soaked through. We'd love to visit again in the summer

For what we paid this was such poor value.
£50 for 2 grandparents and a 3 year old.... that does include the land train but other rides cost extra... if they’re open.
None of the kiosks were open today (first week of September) It was so hot we really needed drinks and ice creams. When we finally made it up the hill to the “restaurant” the disappointment continued. Awful choice and poor quality, very overpriced food.
I’m sorry but as lots of other reviews have already pointed out, this is not a pleasant experience. The actual animals are so few and far between. A lot of enclosures are empty and we searched high and low in some areas but found nothing! It was so disappointing that i commented that the zoo doesn’t know if it’s a zoo or an expensive play park.
There is plenty of play equipment but we’d come to see the animals... we didn’t find many.
If I want a playground I’ll go elsewhere for free.

I visited the zoo with my husband, my mum and our 1 year old grandson who we were looking after for a week so we wanted to make sure we visited a zoo whilst he was here so we chose Dudley Zoo. The Zoo itself is very nice and spacious with a nice variety of animals and we especially loved the walk in aviary which bought lots of smiles and giggles to our grandson’s face. The only thing I would say is that be mindful if you have trouble walking as some of the zoo is very steep which was ok for me and my husband but my mum struggled towards the end of the day. It would help if the zoo signposted the locations of where the animals are as the map was not always easy to follow and especially with a pram too when you have to go down steps as there was no ramps. Whilst there we also decided that we would like some lunch so we visited the only eatery that was open which was the restaurant and ordered our food and also some hot drinks too. When our food arrived I was very disappointed with the quality of the food especially the food that I ordered for my grandson which was 5 pieces of chicken goujons which came with chips which I did not really want but accepted as it was part of the price of the meal, when they arrived they were rock hard and when I broke one up for my grandson and gave it to him, he got so upset and started to cry as because the chicken was so hard it hurt is mouth and teeth and this stressed me out too. I straight away took the chicken goujons back to the staff at the restaurant and was appalled by their response, as there words were, “We know they are not very nice , “as we have had lots of complaints about these” so why I ask myself are they still selling these to customers. I told them my grandson is only 1 and he is upset which they did not offer any compassion. (this issue I will be taking up with the manager as I feel that the staff dealt with this incompetently). Also with this said I will not be visiting this restaurant again and I would advise anyone to take there own food especially if they have very young children.
With the exception of this we did enjoy our day at the zoo as we had lots of laughs and giggles with our grandson.

Has anyone done an experience there? Like fed the cats? Was it good? Worth the money? What's included? How long? Thanks

We are planning to visit in the near future, having 'adopted' a tiger!
My question regards the car park - is there a restriction on vehicle height? We would ideally like to make the visit a part of spending a few days at a nearby site with our motorhome which is just short of 3m high. However, if one cannot park such a vehicle at the zoo then we'll have to move to 'plan B' i.e. travel by car and stay at a hotel instead.

I can't recall a barrier but I'd check.

Is there a funfair at Dudley zoo?

Would you take your 7 month old here?
I'm due to go back to work this week and would like one more adventure before I do.
Also will a pushchair be okay?

It’s a lively zoo. It’s on a hill as it has a castle. They have made a one way route around so it’s ok for pushchairs . We have 3 children and have gone there with pushchairs, double pushchairs.
It’s a friendly zoo. We used to have a season ticket when the boys were younger. We still visit now!

We will have a few hours there, but with so much advertised, what are the "must see" parts for summer 2019?

Hi Louise, we recommend Lemur Wood which has been refurbished for this year, Lorikeet Lookout where you can hand feed colourful birds nectar, the Castle, the beach area (if the weather is hot!), a visit to the tigers, the farmyard for younger children, and there's so much more to see too! We hope you enjoy your day.
