    Quirky - but good beer
A strange place - a tiled basement room gives the feeling of converted toilet block or a mortuary. But it’s welcoming, out of the rain, and has a great selection of real and craft beers. Well-kept and good prices for a city centre. Definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a quick pint somewhere.

    Just so cool
I’ve lived in Manchester all my life and had no idea this bar was here. What a wonderful surprise - so cool! Laid back atmosphere, lovely knowledgeable bar staff. Great selection of beers (not my thing but my friends were impressed), unusual cocktails and a delicious Sauvignon Blanc! I will definitely be back

    Special beer bar
I enjoy this place for its great range of beers and gins. Its a mall tiled bar underground so noise travels so when 2 recent reviewers (with a group of 15 !) complained about being asked to make less noise by bar staff then I agree with the bar staff as noise travels (obviously) and too many selfish people just do not care. Well done that bar person.

If I could choose a zero for this place I would! Extremely rude bar staff who angrily shouted at us for making noise. Saw a similar review from a group of girls in December who this also happened to!

Went into this place with a group of work friends (around 15 of us) on a Thursday evening. Initially when we walked in the smell wasn't great and the atmosphere was pretty dier, so we considered walking straight back out but decided to stay for one drink. No music and only two other people in there, but you give it the benefit of the doubt being midweek.

Immediately got the feeling we weren't really welcome and the guy working behind the bar was stroppy when we changed a drink and asked for an Aperol Spritz which they didn't do. We were in there for around half an hour when the lad behind the bar walked over to us and angrily started telling us we were being too loud and needed to be quiet. We were all in shock at the way he spoke to us, wondering what we had done.

For a group of 15 people chatting away and having a laugh in a bar, we were making a very normal amount of noise. Maybe they should put up signs for a library if this is what is acceptable? Immediately after telling us off like children the lad ran off into the back leaving a girl by herself to face the brunt of any response. Making the mistake of thinking she might be half normal, I asked (very calmly) if we actually were being loud to which she agreed and said "we're not that kind of place". So apparently a bar doesn't welcome people in groups chatting, having a good time or spending their good earned money.

We obviously decided to finish our drinks and started to leave, to which the lad then returned to collect our glasses when there was around three of us left packing up. I then politely asked if he thought the way he spoke to us was acceptable and he came across very rude, to which he continued to repeat "you were being too loud". I asked if there had been any complaints, to which he replied yes. Immediately the only other two guys in there said it wasn't us and I think they were as shocked as we were. The lad said the complaints were from a back room (which was miles away) - definitely made it up.

Anyway, will never visit this place again and we will all be making a point to spread the word not to go here! I hope the managers here consider hiring new staff who actually have a smile on their face and know how to speak to people.

On our annual girly xmas get together we all decided to meet at this quirky little place, somewhere different we thought, oh it was definitely different alright when a member of staff came over and said "could you take the edge off the laughing please as there are other customers in the bar" We were all absolutely gob smacked! To be told not to laugh, in a bar, at Xmas!!!! The people at either side of our tables were as gobsmacked as we were when we apologised to them for laughing, they couldn't believe we had been told "to take the edge off the laughing".

After we had all got over the shock, we called the barman over as he was walking past and explained we were merely having a good time and may have been a little louder as there were so many other people in the bar who were chatting, laughing and having a good time, we told him how he had put a dampener on our evening with his remarks to which he then said "its the bars policy". You can't make it up. So if you want a quiet drink at the busiest time of the year maybe go here, I'm sure they'll accommodate you. Don't go if you're wanting a good time and a laugh with your friends, it's in thier policy!!!!

Great range of beers especially from one of the local breweries, Pomona Island with whom they have links. The main room was quiet when I popped in but the back room was rammed (which made that room very noisy indeed !).

Anyhow, super ales + a gin menu - what more do you want ?

What a horribly dreadful experience. Myself and my mate were enjoying a drink. There was a crowd of 15ish people, who were having fun.

For no reason whatsoever, the barman (long haired chap) came over and had a proper go at this group and said they were being loud. Very uncomfortable.

The group left and so did we. That guy must lose the business a lot of money.

This isn’t a place we visit very regularly but, when we do, we always have a great time. It is something different than your average Pub and attract a more mature crowd.

Set on bridge Street, it is an underground pub with lots of little ante rooms so you can have an intimate drinking experience.

The place has a relaxed atmosphere and does beers you don’t see in many places. They have some really good local brews on as well which is a good thing and it isn’t an expensive place.

We found the service very friendly and it won’t be long before we are back again.

Payday Saturday so let friends in this below ground hidden bar. Selection of beers is vast and displayed on boards. Bar staff knowledgable and recommendations spot on. A number of smaller rooms off the bar offer some intimacy and privacy. Worth a visit

Subterranean drinks down the steps at the Gas Lamp with mates. Recommended for this who love their craft ales and love tiling on the walls. Only one Gluten Free larger but it was the best one so I had a couple. A cute interesting bar and highly recommended.

Lovely bar down below the street level. A hidden gem. Worth searching out. Old workhouse and poor school with features from the time round the building, including lovely photos. Bar really attractive, with different rooms to drink in. Great real ales, lots of choice plus loads of spirits and a book of drinks to choose from! And when you’ve done here, cross the road and go to the brink, the other downstairs bar!
