Old Town
About
Colmar is located near Germany and Switzerland, between the Vosges and the Rhine, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. With its 67,000 inhabitants, it retains a 'country town' atmosphere which contributes so much to its charm. The city offers visitors a fascinating insight into 1,000 years of European history through its exceptional heritage. Wonderfully preserved from the ravages of time, its homogenous historical centre is classed as a 'protected area' and has benefited from careful restoration and ongoing improvements for more than 25 years. Colmar is really a condensed version of the Alsace region. Walking in its streets is like visiting à huge movie set with hundreds of century-old half-timbered houses, lovely canals and flourished pedestrian town center. The city has an impressive selection of quality restaurants and shops selling high-quality local products... Not to miss: the romantic and world famous district of 'the Little Venice'. Colmar is also the capital of Alsace wines and is nestled at the foot of the vineyard next to many idyllic villages. The city hosts the annual Wine Fair of Alsace in august, that has gone through six decades. This event gathers approximately 300 000 people during 15 days of music, party and wine tasting. The city with multicolored houses is also the birthplace of sculptor Bartholdi, father of the famous Statue of Liberty in New York and of Hansi, the well known illustrator of Alsace. The culture vultures will complete their visit by one of its 5 museums. We especially suggest to visit the Unterlinden Museum to discover and admire its wonderful Issenheim Altarpiece or the Toy Museum, if you're looking for something to do with your kids.

    Like stepping back in time
So many timber framed buildings from 14 - 15 - 16 centuries. Like being on a very expensive film set plus of course the (small) area known as Little Venice which was ok but it’s the architecture which is breathtaking and should be preserved for all time!!

    Colmar at it's best
Vieille Ville in Colmar is like stepping into a fairy tale. This old town is full of colorful half-timbered houses that look straight out of a storybook. As you stroll the narrow cobblestone streets, you'll find cafes, bakeries, and shops with local crafts. Don't miss visiting the impressive St. Martin's Church with its stunning architecture. It's a must-visit for anyone who loves the charm and history of old European towns.

    Charming!!!
This is a beautiful and quite charming place with countless photo ops! A must see is St Martin's Church. I had written a review and sadly neglected to take into account and mention the incredibly gorgeous architecture of the exterior and gave a four rating versus a 5 !! Colmar is a great place to set up a base for day trips to nearby villages such as spectacularly magical Eguisheim where we visited today. We will be going to Riquewihr and Ribeauville tomorrow.

    Charming Medieval Old Town
Colmar is a must see if you are in the Alsace region of France or in Northern Switzerland. It’s a short train ride from Basel and is worth every penny. The old town area is a short walk to the north-east from the train station and is famous for its wooden beam medieval buildings. It is one of the best and most untouched old towns in Europe. You can wander the streets with their charming shops and restaurants for hours!!!

    Charming Old Town
Colmar is a beautiful and charming town with dozens of half-timbered buildings and cobblestone streets. There is plenty of public paid parking on the perimeter of the town (we used Sainte Josse structure on the southeast side for 3 Euros per day). There is a lot to experience simply by strolling through the town. The many shops and restaurants give you many options for your day. You could spend either a half or whole day here. During our visit it was extremely hot and we didn't find many ways of avoiding the heat so we opted to shorten our visit. Your first stop should probably be the Visitor's Center so you can get a map.

    Wonderful Old Town
As a former "Reichsstadt" (free imperial city), Colmar has a magnificent picturesque old town. As it was not destroyed during World War II, many remained original. During Christmas time, almost the whole old town is a big wonderful christmas market, which is spread in different places all over the old town.

    Winter Wonderland at Christmas
Quite the sight to see during Christmas market days, very festive and well decorated. Worth the visit. Changes during offseason, but still much to see here. A true taste of Alsace.

    Amazing Advent Markets
Colmar’s Old Town Advent Markets headlined our European tour. The Old Town was completely dolled up with Bears, Gnomes and holiday trappings. We loved the many Christmas markets and Vin Chaud.

One of the most picturesque places you'll ever visit.
We were fortunate to stay in an apartment on the edge of Old Town. This afforded us the ability to walk about each day to enjoy the sights, restaurants, and shops. As the subject header states this is one of the most picturesque places you'll ever visit.

Not a fan of a town that is so full of tourists it starts to become a type of Disney world experience. I have travelled far and wide and was looking forward to the visit. Disappointing to say the lest. Would love everybody to keep visiting here so all the other quaint villages in France remain normal. Because this place is anything but that.

Colmar vieux ville is an excellent spot. A very large number of beautiful and picturesque buildings. The Christmas market was undoubtedly the best I have been to. Lots to see, and spread over several sites.

It was very busy with visitors...hardly surprising!
