The Barrage Vauban is a bridge, a weir and a key component of the defensive works built in the 17th century to protect the city of Strasbourg. The main defensive function of the barrage was to enable, in the event of an attack, the raising the level of the River Ill and thus the flooding of all the lands south of the city, making them impassable to the enemy. The barrage has 13 arches and is 120 metres in length, and is located near the Ponte Couverts and La Petite France.

It’s an elegant edifice joining the two riverbanks. We crossed both internally and scenically along the top terrace.

It was interesting to discover that it was built in the late 1600s with a number of roles. Primarily as defensive in the event of an attack to raise the waters of the Ill River and thus flood surrounding lands.

Superb vistas can be seen from the top route. While inside is atmospheric with displays of many sculptures from the Cathedral and Palais de Rohan.

A fascinating structure designed as part of the city's defences in the 17th century. The main feature today is the walkway along the top which provides excellent views across La Petite France to the Cathedral. It's a particularly great place to see and understand the original defence works across the delta with the multiple towers, numerous gun ports and usefulness of the ability to flood the area. Park at the Modern art gallery nearby and stroll across the Barrage to La Petite France all the way to the old town. Everything's within walking distance. Brilliant!

I've been to Strasbourg before but never from this side. It's a medieval civil engineering feat -- a complex of bridge, dam, buildings that work together and still in use today.
From this scenic point, we walked 2 KM to the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Not much to see except the scenery from higher perspective. Was expecting a bit of history telling. Nice walk around for free.

Though one of the French major cities, walking around the city takes no more than 2 hours. So making a little excursion to Barrage Vauban can be something you should consider to appreciate the historical site.

Picturesque 17th century bridge and defensive work. The lower level passage way contains a variety of sculptures from various parts of Strasbourg. The upper level gives you fantastic views of the Ponts Couverts, the four towers and formerly covered bridges of Strasbourg. The stairs to the upper level are a fairly easy climb.

18th Century defensive barrage across river. Has served as a gunpowder store and barracks but now functions as a covered bridge and has areas displaying statues that have been removed as ornamentation from the outer walls of the structure. The top platform provides an excellent viewing platform for photographs of pretty timber framed buildings in Petty France. Near the town end of the barrage where tourist groups meet to start their tours there are toilets conveniently located within the barrage. Boat tours take in the barrage as part of their route.

One of two Vauban defensive constructions in Strasbourg, this looks onto Petite France and is well worth a visit, either by walking or in the boat tour that circumnavigates the GrandeÎle

The view of Petit-France is very nice from the top of this structure. Also a nice way to cross the river if you're going to the MAMC. On your way back, go through the tunnel and see statues that used to be outside. Some of them are really good. There are public toilets inside as well.
