Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Didn't have a chance to check ahead on potential tours of the building, but it's definitely nice on the eyes. Easy to snap a photo if passing by, or plan ahead and you might be able to take a tour on certain days. It's a functioning city hall though, so it remains a place of work vice a tourist attraction.

As it says on a bronze plaque the Place Pey-Berland was inaugurated in its actual form by former prime minister and Bordeaux mayor Alain Juppé in 2004. On this square is also a statue of Jacques Chaban-Delmas, his predecessor as mayor of Bordeaux and also a former prime minister, whose face is looking towards his former office, the Hotel de Ville, to the west of the Place. At its south is the St.André Cathedral and to the east its separate bell tower Pey-Berland.

The Hotel de Ville is not open to the public, except for some rare special occasions, but one can admire its exterior and the 'Jardins de la Mairie' garden at its back. At the front, facing Place Pey-Berland is an arcade with a portico in the middle, surrounded by engaged Ionian columns. Behind comes a courtyard, the 'Cour d'Honneur' and then the building with the offices of the 'Mairie'.

It was in 1772 that the then Archbishop Ferdinand Maximilien Meriadec, Duc de Rohan, had given the orders for the construction of this palace, in place of an older palace from around 1600. It was finished six years later, but soon after it became an administrative building and as of 1835 the Town Hall of Bordeaux. But 'Palais de Rohan' stuck till today as an alternative name for the 'Mairie'.

At a right angle to the Town Hall is a row of attractive, typical Bordeaux neoclassical buildings, some of them housing cafés with pleasant outdoor seating, like the 'Le Café Français - Brasserie traditionelle', from where it is a pleasure to watch the comings and goings on Place Pey-Berland.

Don't be afraid to pass by the guards and go in as far as the interior barrier to get a good view of this building. Very impressive from the outside.

Hotel de Ville - Bordeaux City Hall stands on a big plateau across the magnificent St. Andre Cathedral.
The whole complex is very vast, built in 18 cent as the Archbishop's palace. Today, among others it houses the Fine Arts museum and the city hall. You can approach only the inner courtyard to make some pics.

The exterior of the Bordeaux City Hall (Hotel de Ville or Palais Rohan) is extremely impressive, but it's really a centerpiece for an entire area of Bordeaux. The city hall itself dates back to the 1700s as a bishop's abode. It was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt. The square that it faces is a wonderful place to people watch and is surrounded by some cafes, shops and the St. Andre Cathedral. There are also art galleries inside the outer walls of the "Hotel de Ville."

Big gate (look through the bars), heavy door, impressive facade in size and stature, very imposing and maybe just a bit intimidating? It is located quite close to the cathedral in the Place Rohan (plaza) and had been called Palais Rohan back in its history.

City hall of Bordeaux is located in Palace Rohan. It was built in 1771 in neoclassical style. It's possible to enter and visit the interior but only on Wednesday at 2:30 pm or Friday 10:00 am and it costs EUR 5.

Although we had way too much rain during 5 days in Bordeaux, we enjoyed the architecture, good wine and city hall. Worth a visit.

Always been impressed by this beautiful stone building and well-groomed gardens, where I have attended many ceremonies from Weddings to VIP receptions, New Year's Greetings to Classical and Contemporary music, visiting Politicians & Ambassadors ... before settling as next-door neighbour in the Connemara Irish Pub !
