Walk along the riverside promenade to photograph this low arched red stone bridge built during Napoleon's time in Bordeaux. Its 17 arches have a significance as they symbolize Napoleon's victories. At the end of each arch was a grey oval plaque, which I assume, noted these victories. Old fashioned street lights lined this flat bridge. We didn't walk across it, but others did judging by the number of people standing along its bridge rails. While looking at the bridge, I saw a river cruise boat sailing underneath it. This bridge starts across the road from one of the old city gates - Porte Bourgogne, but we got a good view of it also from Porte Cailhau, about a 5 min walk between these 2 gates. This is the only bridge that crosses the Garonne River around Place de la Bourse and is easily spotted with its red arches.

This was the very first bridge built across the River Garonne 200 years ago. It is made of red brick and has 17 arches and supports. It has been closed to auto traffic since 2016 and the only vehicles permitted to cross are buses and anything else not an automobile. It is in a fragile condition.
Napoleon (the first) did, in fact, build this bridge for troop movement purposes and he did leave a worthy legacy. The bridge is still quite a beauty and, in the sunset, there are few sights its rival.
For us, the appreciation was purely visual.

We crossed this impressive bridge several times during our holiday in Bordeaux always on the ever efficient tram service.
We were told that this was the first bridge over the river Garonne at Bordeaux being built from 1819 to 1822. It's construction had been planned many years earlier under the orders of the Emperor Napoleon, who as he campaigned in Spain, needed his troops to rapidly cross the river. The original project envisaged a wood bridge, easier to build. Prior to then, it was necessary to cross the river by boat. However due to a lack of resources, the construction took place much later during the Bourbon Restoration following Napoleon being banished to St. Helena. It seems that during construction the builders were faced with many challenges because of the strong current and the high tidal range, 6 m (20 ft), at that point in the river but they were able to use a diving bell borrowed from Britain to stabilise the bridge's pillars.
The bridge stretches alsomost 500 metres in length and has 17 arches. The tastefully designed lights mounted on the bridge are a noteworthy feature.

This is a beautiful bridge. We walked around the area and loved being here. The bridge was built during Napoleon's time for military reasons, so he could move his troops quickly towards the south, and in the particular instance to Spain. Legend has it that the 17 arches of the bridge correspond to the name Napoleon Bonaparte. The views from the top are fantastic and it's worth spending a bit of your free time here.

The river is a key point to draw your attention as you are coming into the city from the south. Although the skyline of the city is low but still very attractive. As you get into the city, the bridge is easy to spot on the river to the right.

Avery attractive bridge which was for many years the only river crossing at Bordeaux. Apparently it was very congested. Now it seems to flow freely, and gives the bulk of space to trams, bikes, and walkers.
It’s a pleasant walk across and back, as the views of the city are so enjoyable.

We had to cross it, and although I would have liked to be able to do it on foot, it was impossible due to the rain. Every time we were going to cross it, it started to rain, so we decided to go by tram and walk through it as much as the weather allowed, taking into account that we would not go through the seventeen arches that make it up.
Currently there are different bridges that connect the center of Bordeaux with the La Bastide neighborhood located on the other bank of the Garonne; for 150 years, the only one that crossed it was this beautiful stone bridge. Any time is good to enjoy it, but at sunset it is truly wonderful.

Napoleon Bonaparte, as many letters as arches for this bridge. The boxes to receive them are empty. It is to Napoleon I that we owe the construction of this bridge. Impossible, he was told, he ordered it for strategic reasons. The troops had to easily cross the Garonne at Bordeaux. So it was done.
Today, since the bridge was closed to car traffic, the bridge has become a tramway and a promenade over the tumultuous waves of the Garonne. We can contemplate the city and its majesty.

Beautiful bridge over the Garonne. Still not sure if the Pierre is "stone" or "near St Pater's church" - a joke which works in many languages. Vibrant market Saturday morning; bit dodgy in the evenings, slightly rundown area. On a tram route too, by one of the several old stone city gates.

It is a good stone and brick bridge that crosses the Garonne River. I crossed him on the bus that took us to visit and later I was able to see him on the night walk we had. I thought it was a good bridge but with nothing to highlight.
