Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The St. Alexander Nevsky Church of the Orthodox parish of Biarritz stands out - it stands out very clearly overall from the French. Architectural style of the numerous & ostentatious "Belle Époque buildings" (...from the monstrous purpose-built building of the 1970s, which defaced the historical cityscape (H.E.) anyway). - The church was consecrated on September 25, 1892 in the presence of members of the Russian Federation. Tsar's family ... and many Russian aristocrats bought themselves - especially after Russia, of course. Revolution of 1917 - at the time in beautiful Biarritz. - But one can clearly see today - also from this worthy & beautiful church - that the French/Russian friendship (...and not only since the war events in Ukraine...) has apparently suffered & is suffering : the "city conservators" of Biarritz could for long decades (!) quite possibly "leap" some euros for dignified restoration - or at least some buckets of wall paint & a scaffolding - so I think : time-honored historical heritage in France has nothing to do with politics ... and it is a cultural shame to let this beautiful sacred building continue to decay !! --- (Ps. : ...the orth. By the way, church can be visited publicly on certain days ... and a small or even larger donation for urgently needed building renovation would certainly be very welcome there...)

Eglise St, Alexandre Nevsky is an impressive Russian Orthodox Church. It was opened in 1870 by the Russian aristocrats who traveled to Biarritz to escape the brutal Russian winters. Very attractive exterior with an ornate interior. No photos were allowed inside.

This Church was built some 100 years ago when many Russians left their home country when Communist Revolution occurred and they came to France.
We visited, better say tried to as it was closed, this Russian Orthodox Church right after spending some time at the lavish Hotel du Palais next door. What a contrast and what a shame for a Church to be left in such a condition. The facade is in desperate need of renovation and being closed it looked like abandoned. I cannot comment the interior as we weren't able to enter.

You see this beautiful building from many vantages along the beach, and it is elegant and grand, but something funny happens when you get up close because it seems to shrink. It is still beautifully shaped and proportioned but not as big as you had imagined from a distance. I think it's a combination of the elevated position and style, but in any case I found this interesting.
Open on Saturdays and Sundays only. When we went in about 2 p.m. on Sunday there was a gentleman giving a lecture in the main church so we just looked in and ducked out. Right from the rusted, in need of paint front iron gates to every other aspect of the interior and exterior this place needs a lot of work. It's not even a faded elegance type of situation, it's just plain dirty and run down. I understand that there is a very small group of people doing their best to look after this place, but it really makes you wonder why a deluxe town that relies heavily on tourism would allow this level of deterioration to such a significant building.
We spent about fifteen minutes here and left feeling we would have rather just had the image of the splendid exterior as a memory to take with us. Perhaps if we had been free to explore more we would have found some joy and inspiration.

We tried to visit it but unfortunately there was a service. Visits only in the afternoon, starting 15.30 onwards. The outside is beautiful.

The church is surprisingly poorly maintained given that Biarritz is very clean and very good looked after place.

A beautiful building which could use some restoration. Like the Russian Orthodox church in Nice, a visit gives insight into a time in history when many Russians came to France.

Before the 1917 Revolution, members of the Russian nobility arrived to take in the air....so many ,in fact, that they erected the Eglise Orthodoxe Russe. This byzentine Russian landmark was built in 1892 and its across from Biarritz's other landmark..the Hotel du Palais. They built it for the wintering aristocrats to worship when they were not enjoying champagne, caviar and basque prostitutes.
Its noted for for its gilded dome, the interior of which is the color of a blue sky on a sunny day. Admittance is strictly royal...only Saturday and Sunday from 3-6pm.

Like many sites in Biarritz, this small Russian Orthodox Church doesn’t open until 3 in the afternoon, so most people pop in here after a day at the beach. There’s the usual iconostasis and elaborate religious painting you may have seen elsewhere but having this plunked in the middle of a French resort town makes it special. No entry fee but donations encouraged.

This church is in bad need of restoration but it is a fascinating building and still has regular services with a small but friendly congregation. We attended the Orthodox Christmas service, which was beautiful.
