- Eduardo GuimarãesRio de Janeiro, RJ1,782 contributionsbest views of the cityThe walls of St Malo are very comfortable to visit and are well preserved. It has the best views of the city and the coast. Take a good windproof jacket, as, like every city on the coast of Brittany, there is always a lot of wind. Unless I'm mistaken, they are open for walks in the morning, afternoon and evening.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2024
- Cathy H12 contributionsSumptuousWhat amazement. I never tire of this city and its landscapes. A weekend with family and then with your partner.... A magnificent fortified city. A privateer story to discover with the children. High or low tide, we never tire of this natural paint. Correct restoration. There are public toilets. Visit by little train not to be overlooked. Lots of tourists (we were one of them) it's a visit to do. but perhaps the flow of tourists should be regulated for the well-being of its inhabitants and the conservation of the place.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California18,926 contributionsWalk on the City WallsThe best thing to do in town is to take a long walk along the top of the city walls. The views of the bay, sea, harbor, and the town are extraordinary. You will find statues along the way and see some restaurants down below.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 June 2024
- 62sergio62Lecco, Italy1,028 contributionsunmissable tourA visit to Saint Malo is not complete without the beautiful walk along its walls. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great but you know, when you go to the ocean you can find everything. However, it prevented us from taking this wonderful walk which allowed us to admire the beautiful beaches but also the part of the city within the wallsVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 June 2024
- The Infinity G75 contributionsA coastal gem in BritannyMany people miss this beautiful town on the French coast. Much of the series "All the Light You Cannot See" was filmed here. This is one of the few towns in France that was mostly destroyed during WWII. Thankfully, many of the new structures within the ramparts have been rebuilt to reflect the original architecture. If you have time take the short ferry ride to Rinard across the harbor. The views are spectacular.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 June 2024
- James_SamDerby, United Kingdom599 contributionsStunning views from the medieval city walls!A pleasant walk along the sun drenched walls of St Malo. Stunning views across the surrounding seascape from the medieval town walls. The salt water sea filled swimming pool was interesting to watch the people dive into the water. Good views of the surrounding beaches. Steep steps in places though. Takes around an hour at a leisurely pace to walk the walls.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 August 2024
- でぇHasuda, Japan58 contributionsIt was a bonus feeling, but I was betrayed by the good guys.Take a bus from Rennes to Mont Saint-Michel and stay overnight. I felt it was a waste to go back to Rennes, so I chose to go via Saint-Malo as a bonus, but I was only there for about four hours, and I was really glad I chose this Directions. It was as nice a city as you could imagine. The bus from Mont Saint-Michel (10:40) has two bus stops, Saint-Malo and Old Town (11:50). As soon as we got off at the last bus stop, the entrance to the Walls and Old Town was right in front. We strolled towards the coast enjoying the streets of the old town. The direct TGV to Paris left at 15:47, so we wanted to enjoy the meal, but the walk and Shopping filled our time. It was a lovely city where I wanted to stay and enjoy seafood whenever I had the chance, to the point where I was embarrassed by what I thought was an extra feeling.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 August 2024
- Armand KValenciennes, France741 contributionsOverall review of the city of Saint Malo: extraordinaryVisit of 22/08/24, Access is well arrowed from the 2x2 lanes, just exit at Saint Malo center, pass the racetrack and it is always straight ahead. I advise parking away from the intramural center and walking. For example the car park located between the terminal and the Naye lock. It's free from 12:00 to 14:00 and we paid 2 euros 30 from 9:30 in the morning to 16:00... Elsewhere it is closer but very quickly crowded and especially 0.80 the 20 minutes... I also advise to observe the movements of the lock it is quite impressive especially for the children to see the road lower and retreat in this way. The gaping hole allows the passage of sailboats, trawlers or very large boats but it happens according to tide times and rather in the evening to avoid disrupting road traffic. The visit and the tour of the ramparts is mandatory for sure. Several possible accesses on the four cardinal points. I recommend going around at high tide and low tide to enjoy the different configurations. The low tide also makes it possible to go to the national fort and the Ile de Bé. Every view, every place is conducive to postcard photos. Remember to favor early morning or evening to avoid the crowds... Intramural downtown is more dedicated to Shopping (Boutique galore of regional products = Pay attention to Awards and provenances ... it is often non-local products) + restaurants galore located east of the city on the port side. The cathedral is also surprising because everything stocky in a bit church mode. The interior is sober, beautiful colorful stained glass windows. The furrow is also worth a visit with the western tip of the beach which has breakwaters along the street: guaranteed effect during high tides. Beautiful houses up the beach with the Grand Pension and the sea baths. No time to see the aquarium which seems so interesting and the neighborhood of Solidor which is located further along the Rance. In conclusion: to do absolutely, it is unmissable.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 August 2024
- Ludo VAntwerp, Belgium949 contributionsTake a walk on the city wallsThe historic center is safely located between the high fortress walls, dating from 12th century and later, which wall the entire city. Along the sea side with some defensive forts. The largest of these is Bastion de Hollande, where there is still an old cannon and the statue of Jaques Cartier. An explorer who brought prosperity and wealth to the city with his discovery of Canada. Along the land side there are four entrance gates.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2024
- Cogito Ergo SumProvince of Padua, Italy26,114 contributionsA place of great charm, an essential visit 🔝The "city of privateers", this is the sketch of Saint-Malo that I deduced from some research carried out on the net 📱🌐. What I can say, in this regard, is that as soon as I arrived here (and without having inquired about the history of the place) I had exactly the impression of being on the set of some movie dedicated to pirates. Maybe it was because of the large sailing ship moored at a quay in the port ⚓️ (which, at first glance, reminded me of Jack Sparrow's Black Pearl) or because of the very valuable architectural layout of the city walls 🧱 (which reminded me of the Attraction "I Corsairs" of Gardaland, especially at the point of the route where the collapse of a fortified rampart is simulated), the fact is that it took us very little to immerse ourselves in the suggestive atmosphere of the Breton town. Since we were staying about 5 km away, we had the opportunity to spend two very pleasant evenings in the center exploring it for the most part. During the first one, just after dinner, while we were appreciating the glance 👁 from the walkway on patrol on the walls 🧱, we literally found ourselves in the middle of an imposing religious procession ✝️ that was heading towards the open space below; in fact, at the latter, there is an access door to the city surmounted by a niche that houses a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Meanwhile, a little girl 👧🏼 who distributed saints to passers-by offered us one of these cards from which we learned that, in fact, the "Marial Procession" dedicated to "Notre-Dame de la Grand'Porte" was scheduled that evening. Truly impressive the number of faithful gathered, moreover in the presence of various prelates who also came with the procession. With the beginning of the celebration we then preferred to continue 🚶🏻🚶🏻♀️ our visit to the inner streets, much quieter, reaching the cathedral of San Vincenzo ⛪️. The next evening, however, after a day of visiting the beautiful Mont Saint-Michel, we closed our experience between Brittany and Normandy with a beautiful complete tour 🚶🏻🚶🏻♀️ of the walkway on the roundabout 🧱 that, in fact, the previous evening we had not been able to walk. Very remarkable this infrastructure, a real Attraction in itself that enhances a village already worthy of its own. Noteworthy, specifically, the side of the walls 🧱 overlooking the sea 🌊 for the presence of the monumental defensive bastions (in particular the "Bastion de la Hollande", also equipped with cannons) and illuminated 💡 in an absolutely suggestive way. We were also struck by the width of the walkway in certain sections, such that even wagons or cars could potentially pass through. Unfortunately, despite the charm of the lighting 💡 at night 🌛, the darkness did not allow us to capture a whole series of details, not to mention the panoramic views, which obviously would have been nice to appreciate (for example, I did not realize that the monument present at the Bastion de la Hollande was that of the well-known explorer Jacques Cartier). A new visit to the city is therefore very timely. Just beyond the walls 🧱 there are several parking lots 🅿️, of course for a fee 💸, at which you can leave your car 🚘. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and exclusive walled cities I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Experience definitely RECOMMENDED 👍🏻.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2024

You get a beautiful view of both the city and the sea from above. It is spacious so despite Saint Malo being a very popular tourist city it did not feel very crowded. (That is nothing like Mont Saint Michel).
You can comfortably walk the whole round in about 1 hour if you want to do the full tour. We walked about half and then took the rest of the tour on the "ground level" in the city.
Many options to eat at a restaurant that is within the wall.

Part of Saint Malo lies within a walled section called intra muros. The surrounding walls are spectacular.
It is possible to go all the way through the ramparts. It is really worth it. We can see view of the sea, the city, the islands that surround saint malo and the beaches.
The walk through the ramparts takes approximately 1 hour, but it's worth it

Ramparts enclose 95% of the old Saint Malo walled city do you can walk nearly all the way round with spectacular views on the seaward sides. Must do part of any Saint Malo visit, especially on a clear day. Lots of public car parks outside the walled city but gets super busy in summer so arrive early,

On holiday and decides to enjoy the amazing views of Sr Malo rampards. Good sturdy flat shoes needed to defy the cobbles manage the walls. Plenty of steps so not all parts of the rampards are suitable for people with mobility issues also steps to enter individual shops too inside the walls. Amazing views. We took the little train toearn the history before visiting individual places of interest. Allow at least one hour to walk the rampards and time to see the shops and have a cuppa and crepe. Bring plenty of €€ as expensive.

The old walled city Intra Muros is a must see place for any trip to Bretagne and a great place to stop for lunch. The ramparts provide fantastic views of the surrounding coastline which are stunning on a clear day. You also get great views of the old streets and structures of the old city. There are over 100 restaurants within the walls. Lots of ground level and underground parking around the city. This is a great overnight stay location with lots of hotels inside and outside the city. There is also a fantastic huge beach which you can also see clearly from the ramparts.

These ramparts are amazing. You can walk all around the old town and there a spectacular view of the sea. Be sure to be there when the high tide come in. It happenes very fast, and the splashing against the walls are beautiful to see. Especially if the sunds out.

Of course the tour of the ramparts is superb and you have to do it but early in the morning. Staying within the walls becomes difficult because there are so many people. We are now in mass tourism, non-stop restaurants, shops, entertainment and a permanent flow in the streets. If you stay in a hotel (high intramural prices) you will be treated to street noise until late at night and will certainly be woken up by drunken bawlers.

After weeks of snow, ice, rain...and Covid, we had to get out of the house; so we headed over to St. Malo. As we love to walk, my wife and I went straight to the remparts. Whether you walk quickly or at a leisurely pace, the views of the sea, the old city and the beaches are lovely. In this time of Covid, it was also great to see restaurants and kiosks offering takeaway food—not the case in many towns and cities. Well worth a visit.

A must-visit in St Malo: the ramparts. Traveling in the middle of August, choose an early hour to enjoy it without too many tourists crowded on the ramparts for multiple photos.

We enjoyed a lovely late summer weekend and the weather was fantastic. Strolling the ramparts there is life all around. Families on the beach, swimmers in the pool and activity center and sailing school on the beach. It is clean and beautifully historic. Wonderful to stroll and enjoy the beautiful views and sea air! There are many access points to and from the ramparts from the old city.

Anyone know the name of the bakery in Saint Malo that is portrayed in All the Light We Can See? Is it still around? Don't have time for a tour, going to Mont Saint Michel tomorrow?
