This remarkable fortress is interesting as at the front of the tower are many timber structures placed in the sand at the beach. You get a good view from above.

It's quite a walk. When you get close, you have to negotiate loose rocks and broken concrete. When you finally reach the gate, you are able to read the tiny sign. 'Only opens July till September'. You look at your watch. It's only May.

We didn't go inside the fort, didn't seem to be open in March 2018. Fun place to walk out to at low tide.

Open from June to September a visit is essential. Most of the fortifications were aimed towards the old enemy Britain. Guided tours are probably a good idea but note you'll only be able to get in at low tide.

We decided to pay and go inside to see the Fort. There is a ton of stuff to see, but it is impressive none the less and a worthwhile place to visit if you are there.

It was raining like mad, we were wet and miserable, and Fort National offered little relief. The interior of the blockhouse looked as if it might be interesting, but something tells me that wasn't part of the experience. A pity, because the rest of the...More

There really is nothing inside that you can't see from outside. Takes 20 mins to wander around slowly.
