Take the plunge and climb the tower. There is a small charge, but it is worth it! There are two things they don't tell you; one is the ascension is done on 300 steps in a spiral that can affect you if you experience vertigo. There are also places where you can step aside and have small rests, which is... More

This is a very historic cathedral. Both inside and outside are very beautiful. In the evening there are light shows on the side resembling stained glass windows. On the front the show has changing scenes with shadows of people climbing up and doing acrobatics similar to circe de sole. One can sit at a nearby outdoor restaurant and see it... More

Lets be honest, if it wasn't for this Cathedral nobody would ever visit Chartres. So if you've made the effort to visit this magnificent Cathedral then you would be remiss to pass on the opportunity to drag your bones to the top of the tower. The view is, well its a view of Chartres, a town that looks as interesting... More

Wonderful, and it was made all the more meaningful with the tour to tell us what we were seeing! How to read stained glass windows, architecture from 1000 years ago, a million things that made me want to learn more.

The climb is not especially demanding, but the spiral staircase is narrow, so passing on the stairs isn't particularly easy. We were lucky, because we went on a quiet day. The views from the top of the old town are excellent and there is, of course, the chance to get up close and personal with the cathedral architecture itself. Probably... More

Well worth the climb...although not for the faint of heart. It is a bit high up. Loved it myself. You get fantastic views of the city and of the rest of the cathedral itself.

I suppose this may not be adapted if you are visiting with your grandmother but if you are fit enough for the stairs, you will get great views of the surroundings and some sense of the height of the cathedral

Quite a depending climb but worth every step. You will be rewarded with exciting views of Chartres itself, it's old houses and courtyards a well as a wide view across the country side.

A beautiful example of French gothic. The stained glass windows are fabulous and the light show at night is spectacular.
