Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Caves Painctes is a place located in Chinon, a tiny town with a wonderful old town, in the Loire Region, in France. In fact, in this town, there are great wines with Appellation of origin and for this reason, we came here in August-2018. I visited Caves Painctes, now here there is a tourism information of wines and it is possible to do a guided visit to see the Caves, which are wonderful. Inside caves, you can see some rooms, where before wine parties were done: you can see bottles, shields of the wine group, meeting rooms, etc. Really a great place, if you are a wine-lover!

A great summary of winemaking life in and Chinon. Really good value at 3 euros for a 25 min film (slightly dated, and in French with English subtitles) followed by an informative tour of the grand caves under the fortress, then a tasting of 3 local wines.

Our guide Louis was delightful and knowledgeable and switched between French and English with ease.

Absolutely no pressure to purchase any wine because there was none for sale!!

Highly recommended as a great way to spend an hour in this beautiful town if you have the time.

Excellent visit to this special location that celebrates and recognises Chinon wine. Knowledgeable and professional guide. No problems in the caves with steps or uneven floof.

Les Caves Painctes is a vast wine cellar in the natural caves beneath the historic Chateau of Chinon. It is well signposted and easily found. Parking might be tricky but is not impossible.

The site attracts large crowds, especially at the weekends and in the summer. Personally, I find it a dark and dank experience. Because of the humdity, the very uneven cave-floor can be slippery, so watch out. Wine tastings are available here and there; but stall holders have other more decorative items of a local nature and flavour on sale too. It is definitely a folksey thing and not to everyone's taste. But if you are looking for something different and have an hour or so to fill, I think it's something to do once and take away the memory of it.

There are a number of other, above-ground, "caves" or wine-sellers on the farms around Chinon which self-advertise with a big sign over the gate at the side of the road; and at these very well-run establishments, it's possible to pick up examples of the excellent local wine in lighter, brighter surroundings. But youy may enjoy the caveman atmosphere of Les Caves Painctes! Bon chance!

At 3 Euros for the video, guided tour and tasting, this was excellent value for money and very informative. Rabelais kept his wine here and the 'Fountain of the Holy Bottle' was well worth the the visit. Very central - the tunnels run beneath the Chateau.

Had a great tour of the caves painctes. The tour is in 3 parts: video, tour, tasting. Interesting and entertaining. Guide was lovely and did the tour in French and English. Lovely to have a first taste of some local wines. Nice and cool on a hot day! Well behaved dogs were accepted.

We learned a lot about the wines of Chinon on this guided tour (in French) of the underground galleries, where wine has been stored since the 15th century. Afterwards, our well-informed guide hosted a tasting of Chinon red and rosé wines, explaining the influence of differences in terroir.
