Our first visit to Chinon and it's castle. We parked in town and walked up the steps but it's possible to park outside or use a lift from town level. We took a self guided tour as there were no English tours when we arrived....More

I have been visiting the fortress over the last thirty years, and the French state has made painstaking and impressive restorations throughout that time. You can park nearby or from the center of town, you can walk up or take the elevator. Much to my...More

The self-guided tour suggests starting with the "Royal Quarters" (a U-shaped arrangement of 3 buildings) around an inner courtyard. Much has been lost to time but the history of one room (Recognition Room) was where Joan of Arc met with King Charles VII (or so...More

Great views heading into and from the fortress. They have a very nice booklet in several languages. The exhibit displays are in English as well as in French which was extremely helpful.

Years ago this was mostly a ruin, it has been renovated and now has multi-media information, but it remains a wonderful place with great views, and of coruse is a significant place in the history of France.
