- Hope31 contributionsLoved It - Well Worth a VisitIf I only had time to visit one palace near Paris, I wouldn't hesitate to choose Fontainebleau. It actually has decorated rooms and authentic furniture. Fontainebleau was beautiful and well worth a visit.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 March 2024
- TubaKoseogluOkcuIstanbul, Türkiye6,863 contributionsLarge EstateDuring our Loire Valley visit, though it was pretty far from the rest of the famous castles, we wanted to visit this castle as well. We were to make a decision between Versailles and Fontainebleau and we opted for Fontainebleau as it was supposed to be less crowded, which was indeed the case. We were there a bit off season, so we did not have to wait in any queues. In fact, there were also automated ticket machines at the entrance which help you to proceed more quickly. This is a pretty large estate, so it takes almost 3 to 4 hours to make a quick tour. When we were there the castle cafés were not open and it was a pity as it would be great to sit on the lake side and sip a coffee.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024
- dmlandisIndio, California68 contributionsWell worth the price of admission.Everyone bears the crowds to see Versaille but Fountainebleau is just as interesting and is uncrowded as well. The audio guide was great - Napoleon had this as his home but the castle itself is 800 years old. There is an awful lot to see and it is well worth the price of 12 euros.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 March 2024
- HENsslHouston, Texas97 contributionsPerhaps......Wonderful day. Easy to get out to the location, no crowds. Yes, yes, Versailles, I know. I've been on a previous and had to persuade my group that it might be a better day trip to see the true abode of French royalty. They were not disappointed and hearing others discuss the crowds at V they didn't really feel like they missed out by visiting the alternative. I get the bucket list nonsense but you might give it a second thought, you may have a far more enjoyable experience.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- Travelling FarToronto, Canada38 contributionsHistory and beautiful decorative designs at Chateau de FontainebleauI have wanted to go for years and finally made it. We took the self audio guide tour and it was perfect. The Napoleon Museum on the first floor was fascinating with lots of things to interest from paintings to military artefacts (uniforms, swords), to an astounding treasure of Napoleon's porcelain services. After that you visit dozens of rooms of the Palace from various reigns all of which are beautiful. Afterwards we took the train ride through the grounds which was a perfect and easy way to go around the property and to see the Chateau from some different aspects. It is worth the few euro for the fun of it.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024
- UrsosarctosUnited Kingdom789 contributionsThis is why you come to FontainebleauThis is a huge edifice, built in several different periods. It is set in a series of gardens. The town of Fontainebleau is twinned with Richmond upon Thames, the site of Hampton Court Palace in the UK, and the comparison is clear. The rooms that you can visit at the chateaux are furnished - not always the case in French chateaux - and there is sufficient information displayed for the lay visitor to grasp what is what. There is a lot of bling. I was disappointed to find that relatively little of the chateaux interior is included in the public visit. The gardens and park are extensive, but lack the Wow Factor. You can go boating on the lake. Access to the gardens is free. You can’t take backpacks into the chateau but there are free secure lockers. Also there are excellent toilets, which are accessible to garden visitors as well as to those who take the paid visit to the interior.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 September 2024

Lots of interesting history that is well explained. Make sure you take a leisurely stroll through the gardens.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2024

A definite must see only an hour or so from Paris. Château originally built in 1137 and added to in 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries. The allowed areas for the 12€ entry are the Napoleon 1 museum, the Popes apartment (Pope Pius VII visited in 1804 and 1812) and the Great Apartments. Period furnishings including some original furniture this is a must see for any Napoleon fans or even later French Royalty.
Highly recommended!

A single entry point and a single direction of visit... you add hordes of tourists and you see what's blocking... so you queue to enter then to go on the first part of the visit... and if you ever wish to to go to the toilet you must come out the way you entered… queue again in the said place then return through the entrance to… queue again!!!!! ???? There is only one place for public toilets for this ENTIRE castle!!! and it’s outside and requires queuing…
Oh and then you cannot rent an audio guide: we are told that it is by reservation… it was 10:30 a.m. on 9/05…. A public holiday where you can expect to have people. Nothing is thought of for the public in this route which frankly spoiled my visit and made me disgusted with this place…
All this does not make us feel welcome, it is not designed for visitors…

The Château de Fontainebleau is decorated by the famous Italian Mannerist artists Rosso Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio. It is a must for Renaissance and Napoleon enthusiasts (it was at Fontainebleau that Napoleon signed his abdication in 1814). It is also a must for someone interesting in tapestries. You can also immerse yourself in the daily life of France's first Renaissance king Francis I as Château de Fontainebleau gives you the possibility to rent historical costumes and dress up in period costumes to have fun and take hilarious photos! Way better then Versailles and maybe the best castle in France.

It is not a long train ride from Paris Gare de Lyon to get off at Fontainebleau-Avon. The good thing is this trip is fully covered by the Navigo découverte (a weekly Metro & bus ticket), the bad thing, for me at least, is that it was a bit confusing to identify which train to get on at the Gare de Lyon. The station is not announced until about 15 minutes before departure. As a new visitor, it is a challenge.
By the way, the Navigo découverte also covers the RoissyBus service between the Paris Garnier and the Paris International Airport. It is therefore a very good option for tourists if they stay in Paris for about 7 days.
Back to the Fontainebleau Chateau, it has a long and important history. Not only you can see François I's renaissance-style court, you can also see the famous horseshoe-shaped staircase, which incidentally was used by Napoleon after his resignation in the Chateau, and he personally walked down the stairs to bid goodbye to his soldiers.
Visiting the Fontainebleau Chateau is walking onto history. Don't leave Paris without this experience, I would suggest.

Although we were too late to get into the chateau on Monday late afternoon and it’s closed on Tuesday’s we still managed to walk around the grounds and the gardens. Very lovely place. Will go back when next in the area and it’s opened. The English gardens were open but they wanted to charge €8 pp when you can see the whole thing for €12/14. So we declined and will wait.

The Château de Fonrainebleau is undergoing a remarkable restoration. Fully furnished, you have to spend a little time with the audio guide offered in addition to the ticket but very well done. The castle is very large, we were able to split the visit into two parts interrupted by lunch. The store is attractive and well stocked.
It is a major place of French heritage that I highly recommend visiting.

We have lived for two years in Barbizon, 15 mn away from Fontainebleau. I finally took visiting friends. I was blown away! It is far more than anything I had imagined.
I took a two hour parking on an adjacent street. Mistake: it takes at least 4 h to visit! And I skipped some. So go to a proper parking a few blocks away where you can stay as long as you need.
I was particularly moved by the Napoleon apartment and more specially by the reconstitution of his field tent interior/ accommodation. It is as if I could touch his spirit. The burnt candles on his work desk where he spent the entire night writing his codified laws for France - the Napoleon Civil Code which is still in use today! His masterpiece- he would say (despite winning 40 battles). Book of Plutarques the Greek philosopher, at his foot. He was a very short man but a giant in history!
It is the only French château that has been continuously inhabited by all the French kings and the emperor during its 700 years. An absolute must see!

Magnificent visit, I recommend it... the staff in the castle is correct and responds to all our requests for information, with the exception of the cashier employee on this 26/11, she was as friendly as a prison door , I assume his position doesn't suit him, it's a shame because he's the first person we see. Then at 4:30 p.m. aix toilets, the lady on duty forbade us to talk in the toilets, telling us to chat outside, because she finished at 5 p.m. when the castle closed and she had to take her bus... I think that a reminder would be necessary to explain that we are visitors and customers and not livestock... too bad for the image of the castle...

Visited in October on a chilly autumn day and even had hot chocolate. Good that the chateau was so large. The inspiration for Versailles was Fontainebleau which belonged to the King's finance minister. Beautiful tapestries, paintings, and furnishings throughout the property. Even tables inlaid in gold. Velvet line walls in some rooms with beautiful draperies and chandeliers. Outside it was beautiful thanks to the Le Notre designed gardens with fountains, conical trees, designs shaped in the lawn, and statues throughout the property. He designed Versailles gardens as well.

Such a great palace. The gardens are amazing. I did some running and it was unique. Aside from the gardens around and the nice alleys, you can also walk around the huge pond on the back which is surrounded by trees. Super nice place. No access to the interior though. Why not?

Est ce que le château est chauffé car, vu les températures en ce moment, j'ai peur que ma visite soit un peu gâchée.

Is it necessary to pre-book an admission ticket for chateau de Fountainebleau for Sunday 2 June, or will we be able to walk up for admission?

I will be visiting next week and plan to visit the chateau, gardens and forest. Trying to plan a meal somewhere during that time. Are there restaurants on the grounds of the Chateau, or do I go into the town for a meal?
Written 14 October 2018
i think that they do have a cafe inside but "town" is just outside, with loads of eateries well within 5 mins walk.
Written 17 October 2018
Hi, very probably we will not have enough time to go inside the chateau, but would like to stroll for half an hour in the gardens. Do we still have to buy the full ticket, please? Or is there a special ticket for just the outside grounds? Tnx

Definitely worth a walk around - it's so beautiful.

Olá! Estive procurando visitas guiadas ao interior do castelo (vi que há diversas super interessantes a pontos inacessíveis com ingresso normal). Sabe me dizer se há visitas em inglês ou apenas em francês. Obrigada!
