We had the pleasure of re-connecting with Sylvanie Arnaud of Art Story Walks this past week during a stay in Paris. We first met Sylvanie 2 years ago for a tour of other sites in Paris and she was outstanding. She is so personable, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate. We first visited Sainte-Chapelle on Ile de la Cite and were captivated as Sylvanie took us through its history, architecture and stunningly beautiful stained glass windows depicting biblical and other scenes (which, fortunate for us, were brilliantly illuminated by the sunny day outside). Sylanvie then took us on leisurely stroll along the banks of the Seine River through the lovely Jardin des Tuileries, and on to our second site, Musee l'Orangerie, famous for it collection of Claude Monet's Water Lillies as well as works by many other artists (Renoir, Matisse and Picasso). Monet's Water Lillies were breathtaking in terms of their scope and the variations in light and colors (based on the time of the day/early evening as Monet captured them). Sylvanie pointed out the brilliant brush strokes by Monet which appeared blurry close up, but come into perspective when viewed at a distance, and how these works were designed for the two circular rooms in which they reside and serve as places for quiet meditation and reflection. The following afternoon, Sylvanie took us on a tour of Musee d'Orsay, housed in a former train station (beautiful in its own design) with its many sculptures and works of art by the Impressionists, including Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne, Gauguin as well as works by Courbet, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and even Arrangement in Gray and Black No. 1 (AKA Whistler's Mother). We appreciated that Sylvanie also pointed out several female artists in both museums who are often overlooked in any review of their collections. Her knowledge, expertise and attention to detail were outstanding. If you are planning a trip to Paris and beyond, and are interested in a tour or tours, we highly recommend that you contact Sylvanie Arnaud of Art Story Walks for an exceptional experience. Sylvanie Arnaud was our guide for both a tour of the Louvre and of the Orsay Museums. What a wonderful experience! Sylvanie’s enthusiasm and her background as a historian and licensed guide helped my wife and I appreciate the art we were seeing. She explained the background of the artists and the times in which they worked. We saw works considered scandalous and learned why. Details that make a piece of sculpture worthy of admiration hundreds of years after its’ creation were pointed out. Sylvanie brought life to the Louvre and the Orsay for us. We highly recommend this tour and Sylvanie.
