The Palais de la Porte Dorée (in the 12th arrondissement) is a classed historical monument, built for the Colonial Exposition of 1931. A symbol of the art deco style, it has housed a tropical aquarium since its creation and, since 2007, the Cité Nationale de l'Histoire de l'Immigration, which takes a fresh look at the history of France by showing the part that was played by immigrants in economical development, social evolution, and the cultural activities of the country. The permanent exhibition, Repères, is available as an open visit with a free audio guide provided that allows you to follow an itinerary that brings together personal accounts of migrants, report extracts, and old and new works of art.

A trusted friend told me it was one of her favorite museums. And it showed an interesting timeline of immigration, yes. But for a museum of that topic, none of the signage was in any language besides French. I was not wowed. The aquarium in...More

This magnificent art déco building houses the museum of immigration history and, incidentally, an aquarium. We went to see an exhibition (now over) devoted to the Italian exodus which in itself was extremely well presented, fascinating and with everything covered from cuisine to Bugatti. And...More

We, two Dutchies, went to this museum to obtain special insights about immigration, unfortunately almost all explanations were given in French, which gave us the unpleasant idea that it was only meant to be read by the French. That gave us a good idea what...More

This museum is devoted to the subject of immigration to France. One learns a tremendous amount here about the waves of newcomers to France, how it has changed over the centuries. Lots of photos, some personal stories. The building itself is fascinating, leftover from a...More

We loved the outrageous architecture of the building but didn't care too much about the museum. The good thing is that you don't need to pay the museum just to see the building, since even the main room is free to enter

This museum is not neutral. It presents the history of immigration into France, and the stories of individual immigrants and refugees, in ways which show empathy and compassion. Our visit coincided with a special exhibition about borders, and how these borders can kill. BUT you...More

Beautiful museum, very well-structured and complete, both in terms of explanations and artistic installations. Also, it's very up-to-date. The personnel too was very nice. Totally recommended, don't let the location discourage you!
