Worth a day to see as much as you can
What first trip to Paris would be complete without a visit to the Louvre? Certainly not ours. First off – this museum is huge! If you are coming here, then plan what you want to see. Unless you plan to spend more than a day here, you are not going to see it all and properly appreciate it as well. Everyone has a different appreciation of course so choose what you would like and also check their website in advance to see which areas are open or closed. With a museum of this size, there is likely always some areas under some level of renovation or maintenance. Of course, the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo are highlights on most everyone’s list but there is a lot to choose from. After about 4 hours for me though – total visual overload. Fortunately, we had seen most of what we came to see and were able to head out.

Rugby scrum in front of Mona Lisa
What a great experience to have. There are some fine art works to see here. It would be impossible to see every piece in one day, we saw two wings and where exhausted after that! The Mona Lisa is the one everyone wants to see. There is a queuing system to get to the exhibit where you then have a free for all scrum at the front with everyone jostling for pole position to get ‘the photo.’ I’ve heard people say how surprised they were that the painting wasn’t bigger than in real life, for me it was the opposite! There are plenty of food outlets with reasonable prices, surprisingly as you are a captive audience. There was a huge queue all around the pyramid to get in, but it did move quickly. All in all a fantastic place to be.

    worth visiting
Obviously a must visit if you are in Paris. Count with 20min from your timeslot until you are actually inside and visiting the Louvre (security check etc). Also make sure you are queuing at the right place. The earlier you are there the earlier you will be let in from the slot you have reserved. There are plenty of places you can eat after the visit - inside the Louvre. If you want to visit Mona Lisa make sure you do it in the beginning as you will probably have to queue there, too and wait for your turn. As a lot of people seemed to be taking selfies with her it took quite a while even though the queue wasn't actually that bad. be prepared to spend a whole day there.

    Finally!
It has been a long-term dream to visit Louvre Museum one day and on a beautiful November day that dream came true. I had a pre-booked ticket for 10am so entrance was easy. I had only limited time to visit the museums so I had decided which areas I wanted to see (this time). What an excellent time to visit; there were other tourist of course but it was not crowded. I was able to see e.g Mona Lisa from the front row just after waiting a minute or two. Exiting the museum was bit odd; one had to walk a long way undegroung trough a mall until the exit. I hope I can visit again with more flexible schedule.
niinan2, thank you for sharing your experience. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed your day to the Louvre!

The Louvre - a Place to Wander in Wonder
Seemed to us each portion of the Louvre has its own setting and mood and, and in my opinion, that is what makes it the most phenomenal museum in the world. This gave us the excuse to be surprised, wandering the halls without thought of where we were heade next. We loved being surprised by the Egyptian collection, phenomenal marble and stone statuary - Yes, Napoleon really was quite short - and the gallery with its 18th century painted ceiling and the French Crown Jewels below. (Galerie d’Apollon). Then there were the multitude of paintings. Now here I did need to make sure to see my favorites: The Lacemaker, The Grande Odalisque (reclining nude), and Liberty Leading the People. So satisfying. Then we wandered into Marly Court with its multiple stairwells and beautiful ancient statues of marble and stone. Surprise after surprise and all amazing.
storyroot2020, thank you very much for your enthusiastic comment! We look forward to welcoming you back to the Louvre

    Beautiful museum
Whenever you are in paris you must visit the biggest museum in world. It’s really amazing architectural. You can spent around half day. Better to buy a ticket earlier before arriving in paris because there is a very long queue. Highly recommend to visit. ❤️

    So much to see.
Came to Paris for a work event but me and a colleague booked to visit the museum on our day off. Beautiful museum - you definitely should get a map so you do not get lost. We did not do the queue to see the mona lisa as it was very long but the zoom on my phone did the trick! The ceilings are so beautiful to look at just as much as the art work on the walls. there was so many beautiful things to see here - definitely visit!

    Make sure you pre book!
To be clear, the content of the Louvre is totally a 5 star. How can it be anything else when you get to see the Mona Lisa and the Venus do Milo?! It's beautiful building along with the iconic glass pyramid outside which is great to see all by itself. My 4 star review of for the organisation. We'd pre booked for 11am and arrived in good time but the queuing outside was chaotic, we ended up waiting for quite some time - you also must pick up a map otherwise you'll struggle to follow the signage. A lot of people complain about the scrum at the Mona Lisa but actually I thought it was actually well managed, you get a good view and aren't really rushed. I think generally there were just too many people in the building itself, not the most relaxing cultural experience. Having said all of that, when you're standing in front of the Venus di Milo, you will forget all of that. There is so much breathtaking art here you could easily spend more than a day here, there is a pretty cool area where they have preserved the original foundations of the building, gives you a sense of how huge the building was at the start. An added bonus is the great shopping centre that you exit through!

    Great experience
We went to see the famous museum on a great day. It is highly recommended to buy the tickets online. Since it was a hectic week the lines were enormous so it was a good decision during Christmas. We wondered around viewing all exhibitions

Great collections, especially in the less crowded sections!
The louvre is a truly incredible collection. I went during the temporary exhibit on Uzbekistan, and I highly recommend that exhibit if you can see it (it doesn’t require separate tickets or anything). The halls of Assyrian art (in the near-eastern section) and Islamic art are some of the most incredible collections, and generally those galleries will be much less crowded than ancient Egypt or the renaissance paintings, which are more popular but also more common in a lot of museums.
nancyl2002usa, thank you so much for your comment. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit of the temporary exhibit "The Splendours of Uzbekistan's Oases".

One of the greatest museum collections in the world, Lourve know how to impress. First the entrance, a courtyard with a large glass pyramid, and it's beautiful facade, great place to meet up with friends family before or after you visit the museum, and to take pictures and selfies. The lobby is huge, there's are shops, bathrooms, and restaurants, as well, as help desks that provide information and maps in various languages. The museum is halls of paintings, artifacts, and sculptures, from all over world. The are pieces from Micheangelo, van Gogh, Picasso, Goya, and many more, showcasing a plethora of art periods and styles. I can go on and on, about what you'll find, just read a few more reviews and you'll get the idea that this place is huge, one the largest museums I've visited. It is also one the most crowded places in all of Paris, so plan carefully and comfortably. And if you want to see the Mona Lisa plan to struggle through a horde of people, everyone wants the perfect picture. Overall my visit went pretty good, I saw a lot, learned a lot, and walked a lot. The Lourve if plan right can be a great experience.

Always purchase your tickets in advance. If you’re an artist you won’t need anything else. What a wonderful museum. You will need 2-3 days to take it all in. Overwhelming number of galleries. Things you only see and read about in books are here. Magical experience.

I feel like an idiot rating the Louvre a 3 star, but jeez guys, get it together with the admittance process. Waiting for hours in the rain only to get to the front and have people just cut in front of us. It was infuriating. How about this:
You have people just come and wait in line while 15-20 employees walk through the line, taking credit cards and issuing tickets. Once you get your ticket, you enter. Why would that be so hard? It’s just so freaking confusing and such a miserable experience we were DONE by the time we got in to the actual museum. We had such a short time in Paris and spent so much time waiting line in the cold rain. The Louvre is freaking awesome.
Oh and the

Extremely huge place whereby you need more than 1 day to look through every level. I missed out the exterior which was a pity. I will return again if I have a chance.
If you already had a pre purchased tickets please go by the mall entrance. My time was 1030am. I was there at 9am and I was allowed in. All you need is to scan the Q R code and I was in.

The Louvre is amazing, of course, but the "new" audioguide was really disappointing. The museum is too vast to manage without a guide, especially when you only have one day. The guide uses a Nintendo device to operate it which is all in English if you choose. It was very confusing and difficult even for family members in their 20s who grew up with Nintendos. The "masterpiece tour" had no overview, no way to skip around. We couldn't manage the first part, so I tried to skip to the next room, but couldn't. Even when we got into the rooms we wanted to see, it was difficult to figure out how to get to any commentary on the pieces we were near. It seemed to want to only comment on certain ones, and didn't explain why. The Wifi in the museum was unavailable more than half the time, and even when we did get on, it was for a limited time. The museum cafe's were all very good, even with the crowds, and the Wifi was better in the restaurants. I still love the Louvre, but next time I'll book a guided tour with a real live person in English.

This is of course, a "must see" in Paris. Booking on line for the 17€ entry price is easy. Make sure you get there 15 minutes before your entey time. There is a queue to get in, then to have your ticket scanned.

The collection is VAST. Many people flock to the mona lisa but it is much quieter exploring the suoerb collection of French art on the 2nd floor.

Don't plan to do everything. Two hours is enough - then return in the future. Otherwise you will be exhausted!

Lengthy but good info-from the Unprepared Traveler.
We went Friday at 1. Had timed entry. Hours on Friday are until 9:45 pm. Ate lunch at Le Mollien in the Louvre. It was a nice break. Food was pretty good for a sandwich with drink and pastry special. Cheaper than bad fries and chicken at a baseball game.

You can upload a Rick Steves tour for free; however, things were moved, and the tour was then inaccurate. Listen to it before you go. It will help you to pick out some key paintings etc.. the audio guide was confusing. We decided to ditch all electronics, strolled through, and enjoyed it much more.
The amount of history of the building and paintings and sculpture is remarkable!
Unless your children are well-behaved or older, it is not for them.
After you are in the pyramid, ditch coats and as much stuff in a complimentary locker as possible.
Note that at each wing, you need to show your entry ticket. As long as you don't leave the pyramid, you can reenter as many times as you want. It may be your quickest way to a bathroom.
