Although this church is far older than Sacre Couer you can understand why it is overshadowed by it's far larger brethren. However, you can really sense the history here and it feels more 'personal'.
And the modern stained-glass windows are absolutely amazing!!

One of the oldest churches in Paris, little visited by tourists but much loved and frequented by Parisians. It is located near the famous Montmarte square. The facade is from the Baroque era while the interior is in medieval style. It is very suggestive due to the absence of decorations, so the appearance is bare but seductive.

We did a half-day self guided tour of Montmarte using an online guide. It was off the beaten track and amazing. Instead of jostling with the street peddlers, and tourist crowds, and stressing out from having to watch out for pick pockets, we took a leisurely stroll from the north starting from METRO - Lamarck-Caulaincourt. The route was relatively quiet. There were a handful of tourists who took the same way, but most of them moved to a different route along the way. We arrived first at Place Dalida. The online guide gave us a brief history of the place and the bust of Dalida. Than we moved to Maison Rose which was absolutely charming. Unfortunately after that we got lost, and could not find the vineyard, Rue Saint-Vincent and the famous Au Lapin Agile. Somehow we accidentally took the short cut to Place du Tertre. The bonus was that along the way, we found a charming pottery shop, some painting shops and souvenir shops which led us to Place du Tertre. From there it was easy to find Basilique du Sacré Cœur and Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre. There was a small Christmas market at the grounds of Basilique du Sacré Cœur. At the top , the view of central Paris over the roof tops of Montmarte from Basilique du Sacré Cœur was absolutely breathtaking. Than using the walking guide, we backtracked to Passe Muraille, followed the route to Moulin de la Galette, passed Bateau Lavoir, and lingered at Le Mur des Je t'aimes. Finally we had lunch at an al fresco at Place des Abbesses before taking the metro back to Paris from Abbesses Metro station. Overall we spent about 4 hours there. I must say the guide was very well written with photos and step by step directions which was a great help. The brief write up of each stop was informative and interesting, Overall we had missed a couple of stops more so from my own confusion of directions rather than anything else. Whoever, wrote the online guide,I like to say a big THANK YOU. It made our trip to Montmarte memorable and no one in my group had any regret going there and doing this self-guided tour.

We thought we were going into the Sacre Couer Church in the Montmartre when we accidentally stumbled into the St Pierre de Montmartre church instead. It was so spiritual inside, the feeling is so difficult to describe, but it's atmospheric. The bright sunlight shone through the stained glass windows creating the most beautiful patterns on the floor. You can tell the church is old and not as well financed as the Sacre Couer but there is such a feeling of spirituality and peace within. This is how a church is supposed to feel. It was unforgettable. Please do not miss this beautiful old church.

I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewer. This church is tucked away on the left as you walk around from Sacre Coeur to the Place du Tertre. It's history is fascinating. It is one of the oldest Christian buildings in Paris and was built on top of a Roman Temple. It was also the place where St Ignatius Loyola announced the founding of the Society of Jesus.
It also has close connections with St Denis and the French monarchy.
It has a pleasant interior and impressive stained glass.
With free entrance, it is worth 20 minutes or more of anyone's time.

So happy that the lines into the Basilica were so long that we decided to explore the neighborhood instead- otherwise we would have missed this gem. They were preparing for the 870th anniversary! Walking through history, at its finest.

It's worth the effort just to be in a 12th century church. Interesting architecture and worth the detour from Sacre-Couer. Smaller crowds too.

First of all, DO NOT walk up the stairs next to a carousel to visit St-Pierre de Montmarte. Start your trip from Rue Lepic at Boulevard de Clichy. If you have trouble going up hills or stairs, you always have an option to ride a metro bus or tour bus. But again, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT walk up the stairs from the carousel. You will never know what you missed out on. Secondly, the reason I do not recommend walking up the stairs and go down the hill the other way is because of the street sellers. They will hunt you down as soon as you walk up the stairs to sell you stuff. I even heard a story where people got mugged from those people. Not trying to judge them, but the best way of avoiding them is to locate them on the way down and pass by them as swiftly as possible. I was able to avoid them only because I was coming down the stairs and saw what they were doing. THEY KNOW WHO ARE TOURISTS and who are NOT.

Now, back to the main review. You gotta go, you gotta go, you got to go see the church! The way up from the bottom of the hill by walking on Rue Lepic and following the crowds, you will be able to experience the real Paris. From a tiny supermarket to famous cafes, you can see artists performing on the street, art pieces presented on the street, and just enjoying the architecture and the people around you, you cannot experience this anywhere else!!

And the church is very beautiful and built with character and authority! Lastly, just enjoy the grass and the stairs that are laid beautifully down the hill (and run by the street sellers)!!

First if you have a day pass metro ticket, you can use this on the funicular railway and that will save your legs.
On arrival you are immedialey met by the stereotypical Tourist sellers, bracelets, pictures statues. Anyone who has travelled know say Non, dont get into conversation and dont make eye contact. The views are spectacular both of the church and the scenery and if you are lucky there will be some entertaining living statues, some who are better than others.
The church is beautiful, however there are beggars at every entrance/exit and the church 'begs' money every few feet all the way round which is a little 'casting the merchants out of the temple'ish for my liking.
Outside again walking around its a shame that a lot of the shops are full of 'tat' there are a few art shopw and lots of cafes but these are serious touristy places.
then tehre are the roaming artists ad again I jst said non. Admittedly about 30 times but eventually they got the hint.

Its worth a visit and i went alone, i never felt threatened or vulnerable, just pestered. If you are not a 'confident tourist' do not go alone.

Also be aware the roads are roads, cars buses and a landtrain drive on them do watch out as you take photos.

Too commercialized, including INSIDE the church, where every few feet is a request for money -- to light a candle or say a prayer or just kneel-- all the way around the inside of the church. It felt like a store rather than a holy place. Shame on the church leadership there!

Jam-packed with Nigerian hucksters. The vendors in the square sell either crap or items that would be better purchased from the bouquinistes.
