Market Street With Many Places to Eat
It's fun to stroll downhill on this market street, part of very old France. The neighborhood is the traditional university area. The food stores here are set up to sell to the neighbors, including a student population. The students flock to the many inexpensive simple places to eat. There is an invasion of tourist-oriented restaurants.

    Breakfast walk of Champions
The best experience for the start of our morning fresh fruit, croissant and coffee on an everyday start to a day of exploring Paris. Yeah a few burger places and falafel but not unlike anywhere else in Paris. Will definately Bowl Mouffetard next time

    Foodies Paradise
A “foodies paradise” and must stop. Fill up with fresh produce, cheese, chocolate, baked goods and more. Next time in Paris, I might just stay at an Air b&b just to take full advantage of this treasure.

This is a nice area to browse and shop -
Unfortunately at the end of August there were many shops closed.

There is a quaint little bookshop at the top of the road where i always manage to get a great book for my mum. I also got a fantastic pistachio cake from Boulangerie Yvan.

Rue Mouffetard has turned into a simple ‘we serve pancakes and falafel everywhere’ street. Such a huge change since I was here last time 😕
Only a few nice shops selling fruits and vegetables and cheese left.

Street full of shops that spill out the door with their goods. We arrived early (around 09:30) and many shops were not open yet. Find everything from fresh raw groceries to prepared food ready to grab and go.

This is a very old market street, basically from the middle ages. In its modern configuration you can find shops that sell just about any food product. Lots of inexpensive fast food as well. Nice stroll.

Several shops make up this street market. It isn't a square or covered market. The shops beautifully present their produce and cafes have outdoor seating.

Responding in part to scotlandmac's negative post. I live part-time in this neighborhood, and I'd like everyone to love it as I do. Different neighborhoods in Paris have different characteristics, and neighborhoods are different on different days of the week. The Mouffetard area is a mix of middle-to-upper income families, all ages, and students (nearby Sorbonne, Science colleges, etc.). It is a true neighborhood, not a high-end shopping or touristic neighborhood. If you walk the length of the pedestrian street (a few blocks), you really get a feel for all dimensions of the neighborhood. Place Contrescarpe at the north end is the perfect coffee-and-people-watching square, with a half-dozen cafés. Along the northern half of the street, there are more take-out places (Greek, crepes, sandwiches), because this is closer to the universities. Along the southern half of the street, there are more restaurants and great shops, including high end chocolates and wines, clothing and teas. At the southernmost end, there's another beautiful flowery square with a perfect kids' playground, cafés - and on Sundays about 11:30, live accordion music and dancing! Sunday afternoons and Monday, many shops are closed, as in many neighborhoods. Sunday morning is the most lively, but all the other days of the week are great too. And about markets - rue Mouffetard is more a "market street" than an open-air street market. The fresh-produce vendors are mostly in storefronts all along the street, rather than stalls in a temporary market. For the local temporary market, go to the Monge Market two blocks off Mouffetard, WedFriSun approx 7-1. Enjoy!

Not sure why this gets such a good write up in guide books. It seemed quite a scruffy area, with non descript shops. Not quite what I associate with Paris. Wasted an hour walking to and from this area , from our hotel, where nice cafes and restaurants were promised but did not materialise.Should have stayed around Luxembourg and the Sorbonne/St Germain - much, much nicer.
