Happened to visit the Church of St Gervais/St. Protais. Was touring the beautiful church when I noticed a number of monks and nuns gathering for prayer. I decided to stay. What an inspiring prayer. Beautiful chant and a lovely recorder meditation. I will be back- hopefully with better French so I can follow along with the prayer!

The key is showing up when services are being held! The church is practically empty, but the singing, oh, the singing. Apparently the church is attached to some kind of monastery and convent combination, with the result that every single service is attended by a dozen or more priests, nuns, and other clergy who sing most rapturously. Liturgies are held Tuesday through Saturday at 7:00, 12:30, 5:30, 6:00 (Vespers), and 6:30 (Eucharist), Sundays at 8:00, 11:00 (Eucharist), and 6:30 (Vespers). There are no services on Mondays. As for the church itself, I thought it was entrancing, and although many of the stained glass windows were lost in the war, many were not. Plus, some of those lost have been replaced with ultra modern stained glass that I found quite beautiful (and I usually hate modern stained glass). Don't miss this gem, hidden in plain sight in the heart of Paris!

Just when you think all the churches are looking the same up pops this little gem. One of the oldest churches in Paris, 4th c, but rebuilt in the 15th c. Built in the French Baroque style instead of the Gothic style of so many. The white stone shows the interior and all the stained glass, decorated walls and paintings to best effect. The altar is magnificent and the many chapels are a wonder and I know my pics do not do it justice. Outside admire the view across the river of Ile de Cite.

One of my favorite places in Paris. Go at 6 pm for the evening vespers (which are I think from Wed to Saturday). The Vespers are sung by a group of nuns clothes in white, and if the sun is out, streams through the stained glass. The vespers turns into Mass seamlessly, so you may find yourself attending Mass as well. Sit nearer the back or sides if you want to make an unintrusive exit (although the mass is worth the visit too). It really is quite remarkable, and transports you to another time.

This is not Notre Dame, this is the Church for the people, the working people by working people who dedicate their lives to seeking God. I was so moved on my previous trip to this Church that I made it to mass on our last nite in Paris. We walked around in the late afternoon and met one of the "fathers" who spoke great english. He invited us to stay for mass and I told him I would not miss it. This Church has the oldest organs in Paris, you can see where bombs hit the pillars of the Church during the war.

Mass is in French of course and yet I was moved to tears. Take a moment from our busy holiday and go into St. Gervais for mass. You leave a changed person, in a good way!

Monastic orders and convents have been declining for decades in France. This community represents the future. Once called the Lion of Judah and the Immolated Lamb, they wisely took a more manageable name. They have two divisions, one men and one women, who work together. Their mission is to the "dessert" of the city. They work half a day in the city. Three ties a day they have services, dressed in white robes, singing in four-part-harmony. Being vibrant and attracting members, they have taken residence at some major church properties, such as in Vezalay and Mont Saint Michel. Here in Paris they are at this church. Over the years, the church, which was once boarded up, has come to life. I never come to Paris without coming here at least once.

This church is extremely significant in the history of Paris so it has plenty of artefacts to interest history buffs. What this church has and ores not so much is a strong sense of sanctuary from the craziness of the city. It has what seems to be a thriving religious community based here. Their religious music is renowned. Maybe this is what makes this place so special?

We came across it by accident, when we got lost. Saw a nun going in trough the back door, and thought "why not".
It was one of the best moments we had in Paris. The light of the candles, and the sunset light on the colored glasses, people praying, and a truly spiritual ambience. Absolutely amazing. Not a turístic sight, not even on guides! But if you want more than just that "ticket / candles sales" that all churches givr you in Paris... this is THE place you have to go.

Paris is full of beautiful churches. Saint Gervais is tucked away in a small side street just on the right bank of the Seine. I had walked by many times and thought the facade to cold and imposing to warrant a look inside. Today, I walked inside and was amazed by the sheer beauty of this church. The stained glass windows are some of the most beautiful in Europe. Behind the high alter is a small chapel with a glorious crowned ceiling. I can't believe tour books don't rank this church as one of the most beautiful in Paris.

I can't wait to go back on a Sunday for mass. This is a must see!

I visited this church a number of times during my last Paris trip. It was an amazing experience. The first time I was able to visit during mass. One of the nuns played a flute during the service that seemed to sing from heaven itself. Combine that experience with a visit to Sacre Coeur for vespers and its hard not to imagine that there are angels in Paris. On another visit, there was a man giving tours of a Chappelle Doree, a small, private chapel within the church (usually locked behind a gate) - you can find more information here on certain Wednesday visits through February 2013 http://jerusalem.cef.fr/paris-saint-gervais/3735-saint-gervais-visites-de-la-chapelle-doree. And my third time was just because I was in the Marais and couldn't help myself. That's how touching this church is. Hope you can work it into your Marais walking tour too!
