Address
Neighbourhood: Ile de la Cité
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.

Palais de justice is a striking building on the Ile de la Cite in Paris. It houses the Law Courts and is part of the former royal residence, adjacent to the Sainte Chapel and Consiergerie.
However, during my several visits I've never reached further than the ornate main gate, so I suppose it's not open to public.

The building next to the Conciergerie is the Palais de Justice de Paris. This was the place where justice was heard and dispensed since medieval times. It was also used as the Parliment of Paris during the French Revolution. Now it is off limits to public and you can take photos front of its gilded gates.

The Palais de Justice de Paris is a large complex of buildings. We visited the Conciergerie and Sainte Chapelle and also had a look around several other parts of the complex. There are law courts in this place as well and many police and other military style officers guard the whole complex. Worth a visit.

This is not a review of the Palais de Justice per se but just a shout out that some of the best views in Paris can be easily missed. If you walk through Ile de la Cite to see Saint Chappelle, make sure you continue your walk out towards the Seine. The views are beautiful and it was well worth seeing this absolutely magnificent clock.

It is situated northwest corner of the Palais de Justice building at the corner of Quai de l'Horloge (horloge is French for clock) and Pont au Change.

Located in the heart of Paris on Ile de la Cité, the Palais occupies 4 hectares of land and is spread out over different floors making up almost 200,000m². Inside, there are some 24 kilometres of corridors, 7,000 doors, and more than 3,150 windows. The history of the Palais de Justice in Paris, located on Ile de la Cité, is often associated with the history of the city. It is also inextricably bound up with the history of royalty, as the palace was for a long time the residence of kings. In accordance with the divine right of kings, the king had all the legislative and executive power, as well as judicial authority. The history of the palace up until the 10th century is almost completely unknown. This is easily explained as after observing the Merovingian and Carolingian kings, their court didn't have a fixed residence. Perhaps they lived elsewhere on Ile de la Cité.

The Palais de Justice is on Ile de la Cité, wedged between Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie. All three were part of the former royal palace which dates back to the 12th century. Of the three, this is the only one off limits to the general public. It is an impressive sight, through it's imposing iron gates.
You can get a bit closer if you visit Sainte-Chapelle, which always has a queue of upto an hour's waiting time. As you exit the chapel you walk right past the main entrance to the Palais a lot closer than from the roadside.
The building was reconstructed in 1857 but is most notoriously known for its role during the French revolution. Here over 1000 people were condemned to death and placed in the Conciergerie prison next door before they were executed.

Although very heavily guarded which can make you a bit anxious, this is one gorgeous and dominant building really worth checking out.

We visited Sainte-Chapelle which is in the same walled & gated area as the Palais de Justice. We walked around outside for a while looking at the building which was built relatively recently in the mid-1800's. You can visit inside but going through all of the extra security did not interest me. The entrance for the Justice Palace and St-Chapelle are right next to each other so make sure you get in the correct line (see my photo).

There are different lines to get into the Palais De Justice and Sainte Chappelle. The ones going into Sainte Chappelle are longer later in the day while the Palais de Justice line is longer earlier in the day, probably for people who are going in for a hearing. Beautiful front courtyard, there are guards for getting in and out of the courtyard. While in the 2nd floor of Sainte Chappelle you can view the upper level of the Palais De Justice. The facade of the building as well as the golden gates make for a good photo op.
