About
The Museum of Jewish Art and History is housed in one of the most beautiful historic monuments in the Marais, the Hôtel de Saint-Aignan, built in the 17th century. The museum traces the evolution of the Jewish world via its artistic and cultural heritage, focussing on the history of the Jews in France since the Middle Ages and evoking the communities of Europe and North Africa. Its collection, one of the finest in the world, comprises religious objects, manuscripts, textiles and unique archive documents concerning the Dreyfus Affair. Special importance is given to the Jewish presence in the arts, featuring the painters of the School of Paris (Chagall, Kikoïne, Soutine...) and contemporary artists such Christian Boltanski and Sophie Calle. The museum runs programmes of workshops for children, families and adults, guided tours, lectures, live performances and films throughout the year.

- AnLil929 contributionsLocal Shoah History and Cultural ArtDespite missing some points, without a working audio guide (that was free), I still appreciated a great deal of the arts and photography surrounding men and women from Paris before and during the Holocaust. There was an interesting display of the cultural diversity: Sephardic/Iberian, Austrian-Hungarian or Ashkenazi Polish, Dutch, German and Moroccan exiles. There wasn’t much or anything about the Harbin and Shanghai Jews in China. I enjoyed the women and Moroccan or Algerian Jewish jewellery relating to women’s culture on the top floor; it was partly captured in a book on Moroccan Jews in the bookshop on the ground floor. I wish I had a couple more hours to view the entire museum. Since I couldn’t read French quickly, I missed some of the content about the Holocaust that I also caught at the Shoah Memorial—15 minutes walk in another part of the 4th arrondissement on the other side of the Centre Pompidou. However, the value for visiting this museum (on the Museum Pass) was unsurpassable. The “hotel” in which it’s located is the building from which Parisian or Ashkenazi Jews were deported in 1940-1944, which makes the history of the Shoah feel nearer and real. Tell the staff in advance if you’ll need to use the elevator instead of the stairs, leading upstairs to the museum artifacts.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 August 2024

We particularly liked the different sections covering the variety of Jewish groups within Europe. After visiting the museum, make sure you visit the remaining Jewish section of the Marais, by the "pletzel".Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2024

A nice small museum packed full with history. The site itself is supposedly a building that used to be a center of the Jewish diaspora in Paris, and thus, is a fitting choice for the MAHJ.
The audio recordings may be a bit lacking for English speakers, as not every piece has an audio pairing, but it does its job well to explain the greater concepts of each showroom. Other than audio, most articles have french explanations beside it, these are easily google translated. And each room has a general summary of its displays, this always has English.
As for speakers of other languages, you are less lucky. Chinese speakers can practically just ignore this place completely. The staff are very friendly though, and the layout for the building is simple.

The Museum of Art and History of Judaism presents the first retrospective in France dedicated to Joann Sfar. The exhibition retraces the journey of an exceptional artist whose creativity has been deployed for more than thirty years in comics, cinema and literature.
The Rabbi's Cat, Little Vampire, Klezmer, Gainsbourg, the Niçois... Joann Sfar's heroes are numerous and all relate to an autobiographical aspect of her life.
Exhibitions dedicated to the work of a comic book author are rare, even more so when they are still alive. This is why the one dedicated to Joann Sfar takes on a symbolic and unique character.

As part of the Cultural Olympiad, the MahJ devotes an exhibition to André Steiner, pioneer of the "New Vision". The Hungarian photographer expressed his talent by fixing athletic and moving bodies in the Paris of the 1930s.
Photographer André Steiner has had a life rich in love, sport and photography. Himself champion of decathlon, the artist shows in his photographs a straightened body, in search of the perfection of the gesture. He thus became the specialist of the moving body and the nude, especially that of his wife Léa.

When I started my visit, I realized that ancient and modern pieces were alternated, without any evident connection (at least to me). Several ancient pieces were quite remarkable, but then - for no reason I could understand - I was made to visit the temporary show (on Marcel Proust, and I was not interested in this!) and I could not finish to view the permanent exhibition. The staff person that made me deviate could offer no explanation in English on why...

Very nice museum in a very nice building. We loved the Pierre Dac exhibition and had a laugh looking at the water pudding recipe and unfortunately we had to fly through the permanent exhibition due to lack of time. So we will come back.

The museum is pretty amazing. It was hard to tell what to expect ( and it was confusing if there was a pamphlet) but the special exhibition as well as the permanent collection very impressive. Particularly the detailed texts covering each item.
I’m not sure if there was an audio guide available but if so, sorry I did not ask.
Lots of info.
I particularly appreciated the Chagall Ryback and Karp artwork.

In February I decided to take my first solo trip to Paris. As a Judeo-Christian from the United States, I was excited to further explore Jewish culture at the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaism.
There were armed guards at the door, which was quite unsettling, but due to a recent attacks I understood why the security was needed.
In regards to the museum, let me just say that the exhibits were breathtaking. I would describe the museum as small, but intimate. I started on the first floor reading about the history of Jews in France. I was brought to tears by the stories that I read.
The only discomfort I experienced was being followed around by the staff the entire time I was at the museum. As a brown American, my chocolate complexion caused me stick out. Due to the recent attacks, I quickly because aware that there was a level of discomfort and skepticism surrounding my presence at the museum that day. I was stopped at least five times in the museum and asked to produce my ticket.
As I mentioned, the vigilance of the security and staff was understood due to recent events, but as an American traveler, I would honestly say that being racially profiled was a bit uncomfortable. I left the museum that day with a heavy heart. I have so much honor and respect for the Jewish culture. I just find it very unfortunate that the recent Paris attacks caused me to be viewed as a potential enemy. I will continue to pray for peace in Paris and peace for the Jews.

Bonjour,

I can't get the website to translate into English for some reason, probably my computer. What are the hours, and the cost for the month of September of this year? Are there any English speaking tours? How long to plan a visit? Thank you.

Hello Sue,
Thanks a lot for your interest in our museum.
We're having a renovation of our website, maybe that's why you had problems with the English version.
Here's what you need to know to plan a visit in September.
The museum is open daily, except on Saturday.
Our daily opening ours are from 11:00 AM to 06:00 PM on weekdays, and from 10:00 AM to 06:00 PM on Sunday.
The ticket is 8 euros and it gives you access to the permanent collection and to a special exhibit about the "Treasures of the Venetian Ghetto".
Please note that the museum will be closed for the Jewish New Year (Rosh HaShana, the 14th and the 15th of September), and Yom Kippur (the 23rd of September).
An English speaking tour is programmed every Sunday in July and August at 3 PM, but for the moment it's not supposed to last after the summer.
However you'll find a free English audioguide next to the ticket desk.
You'll need at least one hour and a half to fully appreciate your visit through the museum's collections.
We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you soon.
Have an excellent day.
Joseph

Does the Museum, currently, hold any works by Marc Chagall?
Thank-you

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for your interest in our museum.
The MAHJ does hold numerous works by Marc Chagall, including several paintings such as "Les portes du cimetière" ("Cemetery doors", 1917), "Le père" ("The Father", 1911), and "Villageois tenant la Torah" ("Village man holding the Torah", 1928).
The MAHJ also holds several engravings, lithographs, stamps and illustrated books by Marc Chagall.
A section of the Museum is dedicated to the "Ecole de Paris" (The school of Paris") painters, hosting works from Chagall, Pascin, Soutine and Kikoïne among others artists.
The MAHJ's collection traces the evolution of the Jewish world via its artistic and cultural heritage, giving special importance to the Jewish presence in the arts.
We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you soon in the museum.
Have an excellent day,
Joseph
