The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Belleville / Père Lachaise
At the eastern edge of Paris lies Belleville / Père Lachaise, an understated wonderland of local treasures. Alongside the world-famous cemetery, family-owned delicatessens and cafés nestle between local stores and establishments. The richness of the population here has created a little Chinatown of Asian restaurants, and the area comes to life at night by a funky underground scene. Façades change from one street to another as one passes from white walled provincial homes to tall blocks and reconverted homes. The whole area is an inspirational mix of people from all corners of the world frequented by artists, students, immigrants, and Parisian families. Once home to supporters of the Paris commune, its rebellious nature is now offset by its rural charms.

I visited the park a couple of times for morning jogging. It was nice with gardens, flowers and several stairways. It is sort of sloppy, so that it was good for the exercising. Several people during those hours either relaxing or doing other activities. Great views of the city from top of the park. It was fine for me for my jogging routine.

I just stumbled upon this park while exploring the neighborhood around my hotel, killing time on my last day in Paris until my flight home. What an absolute delight to meander along the woodland paths, sitting in the sunshine on one of many benches just relaxing after several busy days of sightseeing.
The highlight for me was definitely the art - really interesting mosaics and whimsical airbrushed art of children in the structure above the park and a large mural of children behind what looked like amphitheater seating. It was from that area above the park that you got a fantastic view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower clearly marking the skyline in the distance.
Lots of benches give you a sense that the people here really value relaxation and contemplation. There were outdoor ping pong tables that families were enjoying together, really nice to see.
For me, this was a welcome hidden gem!

The Parc de Belleville, is right off the tourist track, which makes it an attractive proposition from my point of view. Its in northeast Paris, about 15 minutes walk from the Pere Lachaise cemetary, in case you are heading there at some point. It has a stunning view of Paris, better than the Sacre Coeur in my opinion, as you can easily see the Eiffel Tower. The park is landscaped up the side of a hill, with a large terraced area at the top. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, and the park was filled with Parisian's enjoying a brief splash of sunshine. Families and couples were everywhere and they even had some kind of community gathering on the terrace, with singing going on. I saw only one of two cameras, so I would say it was about 99% locals. There is a metro station at the bottom of the hill, so its easy to get back to wherever you came from. This is a good spot to visit if you are out at Montmatre or in the vicinity of Canal St Martin as its just a few more metro stops further on.

We arrived to the location of Belleville after checking reviews of how trendy this area was with a lot of street art. This was a fail from the start, the area is super dodgy, lots of dodgy people right when you leave the station. It’s a poor area of the city which doesn’t mean it’s unsafe or dangerous, but this was definitely the case. All streets around the station seemed to have works around it and there was no street art worth looking at, just bad graffitis and tags. We decided to give a go to Belleville park after seeing reviews online and what a mistake it was. I don’t really know if things have changed in recent years, but as soon as we got in we felt super unsafe, lots of groups of (dodgy) men spread around the park, some fighting and shouting, we walked there for 5 minutes and we were actually afraid to leave the park, as there were lots of groups of men all around the exits. I never felt unsafe in any of city breaks I’ve been and I literally was afraid I was going to get robbed or worse in that park. This was at 2pm in the afternoon. This is not the place for a couple, defo not for single women, not a place for families. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, this is a dangerous area and don’t get fooled by the good reviews , it’s astonishing that theres no current info about this park and who frequents it, it’s misleading and dangerous. You can get the same views elsewhere without feeling threatened!!! I actually got out of there shaking , not a nice feeling.

I was hesitating about my overall rating, because my feelings of this park are quite ambivalent. The park itself is not bad, but nothing special. The lower part of the park and the neighbourhood was full of strange people and I didn't actually felt much safe there, despite the fact I was there with 5 of my friends. However, the view from the top is wonderful, so the park is definitely worth visiting.

After arriving at 10am on a June weekday morning, we entered the park and left again within 5 minutes. Drug/social issues immediately apparent among people on the streets/in the park; sad to see and felt unsafe.

It is a nice park with some spots having a very good view of the city of Paris. Very few tourists, since it is rather far from the center. However, I wouldn't say that I enjoyed it that much or that I would like to revisit it or even to recommend it to you. You should visit it if you are already in the neighborhood or if you want to spend some time far away from the crowded Paris center, but don't bother to go that far, just for this park, you will be rather dissapointed.

If you want to find piece in the big city of love/lights, you want to find yourself in and around the belleville area. It's nice to stroll through the park with it's quiet places and streaming water.

Given the location and some of the views this could be a very nice park, sadly however it's a bit of a mess. Of all the parks in Paris I have visited this one has to be the poorest in terms of maintenance. Lots of trash, a strong smell of urine, and a number sleeping on benches more than offset the fact that it has nice views over the city in a few places. The police presence in the park was very noticeable. Why anyone would visit this park, in its current state, while Buttes is a mere ten minute walk away is a mystery to me.

Staying in the Belleville neighbourhood provided us with ample opportunity to visit this little gem of a park. It is truly an equivalent of Montmarte without the buzzing tourists.
Reached by an easy stroll from the Pyrenees metro station (no need for a funicular here!) you will love it for its great view of Paris, its graciousness and tranquility on the many terraces between the "waterfall fountain" and the bamboo, or be disappointed if you miss the hectic atmosphere of the crowds, fake artists or souvenir sellers which are typical for Montmartre.
My suggestion: Walk from the viewing platform on top of the park straight downwards along the long fountain; at the bottom turn right and follow the street until you reach rue Bellevue which is truly remarkable for its Chinatown. Turn left and walk down the hill on rue Bellevue to the Bellevue metro station (15 min altogether). Hopefully you have space in your stomach for a meal in any of the eateries which cater for any (Asian) taste and wallet. The closer you come to the metro station the more numerous they get.
A lovely little excursion - and at least I don't think that it is far from the city centre at all.

Is Parc de Belleville a good place to watch fireworks on le 14 juillet?
Written 11 May 2019
Ciao .

Merci
