This small area is so easy to overlook, and yet it's one of my favourite places to bring anyone new to Paris. It's so close to the chaos and noise and confusion which now surrounds Notre Dame, and it's so little visited. Take a turn off the main road and you leave all the people behind you. And you can... The area north of Notre Dame, left if you are looking at the front entrance, was once the site of the cloisters and outer cathedral precincts. Today the network of narrow medieval streets still exist with names like Rue des Chantres and Rue des Ursins. You can do a walking tour yourself or join a guided one which leaves from... More

We really enjoyed walking along this area of the island. It is much quieter than the rest of Il Cite. Can get away from crowds and get a sense of years ago. Lovely area to visit.

Taking a step back in time in some big cities is difficult, but this section of this island you could almost forget where you are in the middle of one of the mega cities of Europe. A beautiful space of respite.

Staying in Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis

Neighbourhood Profile
Ile de la Cite / Ile Saint-Louis
Two islands sit in the middle of the Seine at the very heart of Paris. The more majestic one, Ile de la Cité, sparkles with history. This is the birthplace of Paris, the home of the Gothic Sainte-Chapelle, and the site of the prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution. Tourists flock to see the iconic Notre Dame and the beautiful bridges that straddle the Seine. Ile Saint-Louis, the more provincial island, welcomes you with cozy traditional eateries, small boutiques, and what some people say is the best ice cream in the city. This is essential Paris from its very beginnings to its modern appeal.
