Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was my first visit to the opera at Versailles but my partner visits fairly regularly when productions of Lully and Rameau’s operas are performed here. The building is stunning, just beautiful. The performance of “Armide” by Lully was amazing - I’m an ex-musician and was blown away by the marvel of this opera. A special mention to two people - Marie Van Rhijin who performed the harpsichord beautifully despite the onset of a sudden coughing episode (it was clear after the interval that she had a cold), and to Stephanie D’Oustrac whose incredible onstage presence & vocals in the lead role of Armide, stole the show. I look forward to returning. Highly recommended.

WE took the tour and it was excellent. I believe a real must. Just to see first hand how well that opera house was constructed and the beauty that was everywhere. Makes the newly constructed opera house seem to boring and trite. GO visit this place..

Wow. The opera house is wonderful. We took a tour and saw so much. It is decedent and marvelous. We thought the phantom could be behind any closed door. The tour also gives you a little free time at the end to roam. We got same day tickets and were able to fit it into a full schedule.

I dedicated my visit to Versailles to attend Mozart's opera gala in the Royal Opera House. I booked a room in the Trianon Palace Hotel, a dinner in La Veranda and a premium ticket to the performance. The whole trip is a dream. The opera house is backed up with history that could not be matched with any other. The house is 10 minutes walk from the hotel through the gardens of Chateau de Versailles. Mind you that the performance starts relatively early at 4:30 pm. By the time you finish, the gardens are closed to the public and you need to take the streets back to the hotel. The experience takes you back in time to a tranquil peaceful atmosphere that probably dates back to a couple of centuries old. Few things may not be perfect by todays standards however. The theater is not friendly to persons with challenged mobility, particularly the stairs to the cloak room. The premium seats were benches that were really uncomfortable and seating was by territorial estimation. You sit next to that gentleman or closer to this lady. Few seats in the front were probably reserved to the opera cult friends of the house. These are minor defects in a master piece work.

If you're into Baroque opera, there are few better places to see it than the Royal Opera at Versailles, simply because there are not all that many Baroque theatres of such outstanding beauty. This is the third season we've been, and it has always been an unforgettable experience for the music, the productions and the atmosphere. The theatre, which seems large, is actually designed on an intimate scale so that you can see and hear well wherever you sit. The Royal Opera has a large and varied program of operas and concerts throughout most of the year. The RER runs late enough so that you can get back to Paris after the performance without difficulty. The online booking is very efficient. The singers, musicians, dancers (there's always some ballet in these operas) are all top-flight. A really unique experience.

We took a guided tour with a really good story teller as our guide. She told us lots of History of the opera house while making it fun to listen. There are lots of steps to maneuver during this tour, but many of them are shallow making it a little more comfortable to climb up and down. The tour encompasses the main theatre as well as several rooms once used only by those who were box owners. You really should not miss this glimpse of historical Paris.

Excellent modern ballet, whimsical with a strong performance. The simplicity of the ballet was perfect against the dramatic setting of The Royal Opera.

As a part of the private tour of the Chateau, this is the last stop on your tour. We were able to spend extra time in here learning about the history and architectural aspects of the Opera. It was quite educational (as all of the private tour is) to learn how the theatre operated.

I came to Versailles to see Lully's Armide performed at the Opera Royal. The performance itself was excellent in every aspect but the theatre itself added to the magic of the evening.
It has been restored fairly recently to its former grandeur. The architecture, the frescoes, the pillars, the chandeliers all come together to make a rich and beautiful space. To experience it as a working theatre (rather than just another thing to see during the Chateau visit) adds an extra dimension. Good acoustics too.
The corridor leading from the Chapel to the Opera acts as a kind of foyer; originally no doubt a space in which to walk up and down and see and be seen (and it still seems to be). There is only one small bar operating for drinks and snacks - the bar staff cope pretty well, but there are not many tables provided on which to place glasses and plates. But that's a minor issue.
The theatre is worth seeing in itself. But there's a pretty full programme of classical concerts and operas throughout the year. Anyone who likes this kind of music, but especially French music of the 17th and 18th centuries, might want to consider attending one. To hear this music in the kind of space for which it was written is a privilege as well as a pleasure.

Hi, we have tickets for an opera here in December, what was the dress code/type of clothes most people wore please? Thanks in advance!
Written 1 November 2017
Was there in June and I was surprised at the range — very formal evening gowns to t-shirts and shorts. Either of those stood out, not in a good way. Most dressed like going out for a nice dinner: Men wore suitjackets and pants (NOT jeans), ties were 50-50. Women nearly all wore a nice dress with either jacket or cardigan. Scarves, always. Remember that France is conservative so quality materials and little skin. Have fun!

Can anyone point me to the right tour to be able to see the Royal Opera? I have read lots of stuff, but I can't seems to find the right thing.

Hey there, we booked a guided tour on the day at the Palace of Versailles. We arrived early in the morning to the palace, booked the guided tour and we just had to wait in this room for about 15 minutes. The Royal Opera part of the tour was towards the end.

Is it realistic to tour Versailles and attend a 20:00 performance in The Royal Opera on the same day? If so, what would be idea timing and itinerary? From Paris would it be more convenient to travel by train or car? Restaurant recommendations would be appreciated as well.
