During the winter months the Chateau is free on the first Sunday of the month so we decided to explore it. This is not a quick in and out visit as you will be climbing stairs and walking along the walls and towers. This fortified chateau has the wooden walkways reconstructed so you can see how this added to the... More

To get a look at the story of the Cathars you must visit this city chateau. Yes it's pink in the light, but it is also where the most noble of Knights lived, Raimond Roger de Trencavel. When besieged, knowing the city could withstand a long onslaught, he sought instead to have the besieges pass by and get a peaceful... More

We visited Carcassonne several years ago at Easter, the town was packed and the queue to visit the Chateau horrendously long and it was due to close within the hour so we gave it a miss. So our visit at the end of October gave the ideal opportunity to see exactly what we had missed. Even then we had to... More

Not only to you get to see the Chateau but even better is the walk around the ramparts which gives great view over the surrounding countryside and the only view of the splendid theatre, The interior of the Chateau is fairly sparse but is interesting for the architecture and as a good example of a fortified medieval chateau.

We bought regular tickets that came with audio in your desired language. I guide was not really necessary as all seemed to be covered by the audio. It was very interesting and fun to go all the way around the medieval city, by ramparts, steps and ramps, etc.It has been impressively restored and most all areas can be visited. Views... More

This is a must visit when you are in Carcassonne. They charge to visit but it is well worth the cost. You see more of the history of the chateau and the city, see wonderful exhibits and you also have access to the top of the inner city walls which enables you to have amazing views over the city.

If you want to enjoy this site read about its gruesome and chilling historical context first. Cathar history is a real eyeopener indeed.

Impressive facade, but not that interesting inside, seems to be spread out to fill the rooms, could do better

Whilst entry is paid for, this is should be on the visiting list of all who go to Carcassonne. The architecture is marvellous, and the history within most interesting. It also provides visitors with the opportunity to walk the walls - a must!

Wonderful displays full of historic information, and the walk along the ramparts is un-missable. Highly recommended. (NB lots of stairs, so not wheelchair accessible).
