Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,600 years of history. See a 12-minute film combining 3-D images and close-up footage; walk along the galleries, the fortified walls and the north ramparts; discover the museum of masonry and many other attractions. This inner castle within Carcassonne is well worth the extra time and effort and is very reasonably priced - under 10 euros per person. I took the audio guide which is just a few euros more and it is well worth the little extra and one learns so much more. Did this a few years back and was just as... More

When visiting Carcassonne Cite you really must spend a little time visiting this castle within a castle. It was one of our highlights of our trip but as you would expect it there are plenty of stairs so not accessible to all. We forked out the extra 3 Euros for the audio guide and felt that it enhanced the visit... More

We stayed inside the city walls for 2 nights and this museum was one of the must see attractions. It highlights medieval life across a number of different levels and includes a lot of stairs. We took the audio tour which was very informative. It was pretty quiet from a tourist perspective as most people don't visit in Winter which... More

This was definitely the highlight of our trip to Carcassonne! Beautiful views, great history, some wonderful opportunities for photos. Under 25 EU nationals are also free, which was perfect for me but I would have gladly paid the €9 entrance fee!

The video presentation has English subtitles which was most helpful and informative. It took us 2 hours to walk thru the ancient castle and its cathedral. We were in awe with its history, architecture and views. It is worth the 1 hour drive from Toulouse and the 9 euro entrance fee. Should wear comfortable shoes as there are steep stairs... More

Arrive early for your ticket even if you plan to go later in the day, whenever you want, until it closes. Later in the day, the line gets long to go in. We went early and enjoyed few people and lots of place to ourselves. There is a short film to explain the castle and it's time in history. You... More

You can go with a tour guide or just read the boards. I dont think it needs a tour guide. There arent many things to see inside the castle just nice to take pictures. Many tourists during the weekend. He entry fee is 9 euros. If you are near by its good to give it a visit.

If you are into photography then La Cite is the perfect place for you. ideally very early morning is great as you can have the streets to yourself. Great shots can be got near the Narbonne gate along the ramparts. If you want a great shot over the vines of La Cite then from Carcassonne follow the canal du midi... More
