Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to architecture - I find many 'modern' buildings a scar on what would otherwise be gorgeous vistas. So for me this area of Montpellier is a gem. Firstly because it sits apart from the old city and secondly because it's actually very tastefully designed.
Right by the Place de la Comedie is the Polygone shopping centre - walk through it and you're in the delightful 'new' area.
Stroll down the long walkway (adorned with cafes, restaurants, fountains and multiple places to sit), pass the olympic sized swimming pool. You'll then come to the Esplanade - an area that one could describe as a modern version of the Royal Crescent in Bath. A great open space, with grass, facing the river.
You'll find more places to eat between the arc of apartments and the river. A good spot for lunch.

I think the Esplanade across from Musee Fabre is nicer, especially if you have kids since that one has a playground. However, i went in March, and the grass was still kind of dead, so maybe that's why I wasn't as impressed. It's a group of buildings in a demi-circle. The walk through Antigone to get there was much prettier, and just a little beyond the Esplanade are some restaurants with nice views of a pretty fountain across the way.

During the day it is a lovely place to shop second hand books, relax and enjoy a drink to some music or have the kids frolic. On Friday evenings it becomes a lively festival with local wineries, local food, markets and visiting music. Surprise, but awesome. If you have flexibility with your trip, try to see Montpellier on a Friday.

A clever way to link the Comedy with the concert hall at the Corum. Good place for markets and lots of places to eat under the trees while watching the world go by with fountains in the background

Esplanade de l'Europe is a huge amphitheatre of buildings located just before the river Lez. If you are coming from Antigone, simply keep walking on the main street crossing the area, and you'll find yourself into the amphitheatre and in front of a good copy of the Nike of Samothrace, standing right in the middle of the square. The amphitheatre is made up of inhabited buildings: amazing...
From here you can go down the stairs to the river Lez and admire the Palais de la Région, a glass building with the shape of a triumph ark hosting the offices of the Region Council: impressive.
If you go there during the day, you can take a rest on the borders of the river Lez, where a nice park has been built on purpose.
At night, this area is very lively.

What's fantastic about Montpellier is how the old and the new mix. The Esplanade d'Europe is the other (new) half of the Montpellier face.
It's a large open space, with lots of grass and space to take a break.

The world strolls here on Sunday afternoons. Every Friday in the summer there is a wine tasting that draws a huge crowd and is THE place to be in Montpellier. Dr. Seuss-like park for the kids to play, grassy fields to picnic on, quiet benches to sit and watch the world go by.

This is where you get the tram to catch a bus straight to the airport, coach number 102 I think, again much cheaper than getting a taxi which is about 24 euros compared to the tram and bus about 3 euro's each.

Best promenade i've ever seen. As walking on the promenade, you pass lots of beautiful fountains and modern architecture. It ends on square of Europe, where the australian bar serves the best cocktails and piazza papa the best pizzas!

I visited here to initially look for the airport shuttle bus to take me to the airport. The shuttle stop was on the opposite side of the tram line so I did not have to walk far. So I stopped here to rest with the children, get something to eat in one of the local restaurants and take in the magnificent, water fountain views and rest.
It is a new place but built well into its surroundings so is not out of place. It is a good place to rest, eat and take in the views. The restaurants close by means that you can get something to eat with the family, watch out for the prices as some are abit expensive.
