Step back in time, nearly 2,000 years here. An amazingly well kept and maintained arena from Roman times. The audio guide tour is great (available in French, English, German, Spanish and several others). The audio tour route takes you through the entire arena with great views to be had. It's great commentary as well, although you could also arrange a guided tour in advance if you wish. Get one of the combo passes if you want to visit the Romanite Museum (excellent place), Tour Magne, and Maison Carree - it's worth it. Take your time and enjoy the tour at your own pace. There are toilets and a gift shop on site. The arena itself remains in active use with concerts and reenactments taking place every year. Bring sunscreen and a hat (and water) if visiting during the hotter months. Also know there are stone stairs to traverse throughout the tour - no ramps or lifts available, so be prepared.

The amphitheater is a beautiful and historic Roman arena that will inspire any intrepid traveller with an interest in Roman history. There is an audioguide available for anyone interested in learning more about the history of the arena and is a worthwhile addition when looking around the amphitheater. At the exit of the arena there is a shop where people can buy souvenirs. There is a combination ticket available to buy that also includes access to the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne, I’d recommend buying it if you’re interested in site seeing Nîmes. I’d definitely recommend visiting the Amphitheater of Nîmes.

We were aware that the Arena was closed for the Whitsun Feria, so timed our visit for the first day after. It's a very well preserved arena, and the interpretation boards are helpful in giving the background to the gladiators. We got the combined visitor ticket for the Arena, Museum, Temple and Roman Tour. It's worth getting, though we did feel a bit rushed. All doable as a day trip from Montpellier though.

I had been intending this visit for many years having already seen the arena in Arles and Colosseum in Rome and finally made it. It falls between the other two - bigger and better maintained than Arles, smaller and less crowded than Rome. It is excellent value with a €10 ticket allowing you to roam around the arena walls and seating at will. Very impressive architecturally and though some areas are clearly recently maintained this does not detract in any way and ensures the future of this important monument. Even more impressive is the regular use to which it is still put - and not just the Ferias. The day I was there it was set up for an Avril Lavigne concert in the evening and far from spoiling the experience the huge staging equipment merely served to illustrate another way to make use of historic buildings and helped increase the admiration for the designers and builders of 2,000 years ago! Although in regular use there have been no concessions to modernity so to enjoy the views from the top you need to be fit, mobile and not overly concerned about heights ...

I absolutely loved visiting the amphitheatre right in Nîmes city centre. Fantastic that you can wander around it reading bits of history or paying for headphones to listen in more detail. Highly recommended! We even managed to gonto a concert, there, which was very special. Thank you Nîmes!
