- Traveler OWashington DC, District of Columbia1,216 contributionsAncient Amazing ArenaStep back in time, nearly 2,000 years here. An amazingly well kept and maintained arena from Roman times. The audio guide tour is great (available in French, English, German, Spanish and several others). The audio tour route takes you through the entire arena with great views to be had. It's great commentary as well, although you could also arrange a guided tour in advance if you wish. Get one of the combo passes if you want to visit the Romanite Museum (excellent place), Tour Magne, and Maison Carree - it's worth it. Take your time and enjoy the tour at your own pace. There are toilets and a gift shop on site. The arena itself remains in active use with concerts and reenactments taking place every year. Bring sunscreen and a hat (and water) if visiting during the hotter months. Also know there are stone stairs to traverse throughout the tour - no ramps or lifts available, so be prepared.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 May 2024
- Simon JManchester, United Kingdom197 contributionsBeautiful and Historic AmpitheatreThe amphitheater is a beautiful and historic Roman arena that will inspire any intrepid traveller with an interest in Roman history. There is an audioguide available for anyone interested in learning more about the history of the arena and is a worthwhile addition when looking around the amphitheater. At the exit of the arena there is a shop where people can buy souvenirs. There is a combination ticket available to buy that also includes access to the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne, I’d recommend buying it if you’re interested in site seeing Nîmes. I’d definitely recommend visiting the Amphitheater of Nîmes.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024
- ScotchMissedOuter Hebrides, United Kingdom1,969 contributionsA gladiatorial appreciation! We were aware that the Arena was closed for the Whitsun Feria, so timed our visit for the first day after. It's a very well preserved arena, and the interpretation boards are helpful in giving the background to the gladiators. We got the combined visitor ticket for the Arena, Museum, Temple and Roman Tour. It's worth getting, though we did feel a bit rushed. All doable as a day trip from Montpellier though.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2024
- TimDiggleHarrogate, United Kingdom203 contributionsTerrific site of historical importanceI had been intending this visit for many years having already seen the arena in Arles and Colosseum in Rome and finally made it. It falls between the other two - bigger and better maintained than Arles, smaller and less crowded than Rome. It is excellent value with a €10 ticket allowing you to roam around the arena walls and seating at will. Very impressive architecturally and though some areas are clearly recently maintained this does not detract in any way and ensures the future of this important monument. Even more impressive is the regular use to which it is still put - and not just the Ferias. The day I was there it was set up for an Avril Lavigne concert in the evening and far from spoiling the experience the huge staging equipment merely served to illustrate another way to make use of historic buildings and helped increase the admiration for the designers and builders of 2,000 years ago! Although in regular use there have been no concessions to modernity so to enjoy the views from the top you need to be fit, mobile and not overly concerned about heights ...Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 July 2024
- IOMtravelgirlDouglas, United Kingdom591 contributionsAmazing, historical siteI absolutely loved visiting the amphitheatre right in Nîmes city centre. Fantastic that you can wander around it reading bits of history or paying for headphones to listen in more detail. Highly recommended! We even managed to gonto a concert, there, which was very special. Thank you Nîmes!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024

We bought a combination ticket which included 3 attractions in Nimes and the Pont du Gard.
In many ways the arena is better from the outside. The inside is a real mix of ages, with much building work quite modern.
Yes it dates back 2000 years, but significant parts of it are much newer than that.
The audio guide is included at no additional cost - very fortunate as I felt it added little value.

Come and see the Amphitheater, don’t mind the mess! Don’t mind the setup for the concert or for the festival! Don’t mind the lack of clarity on where you can and can’t go.
Well, I suppose there’s the audio sound bytes when you do find something.
I’d say skip this attraction and the entrance fee unless you’re specifically studying this era/architecture or you have a fascination with gladiators.
Glad he ate her.
The only time I think it’s worth it to come is when there are concerts and events. Especially with champagne served by the glass. That’s my type of amphitheater! Then the place is cool. Otherwise, *yawn*

The most intact arena surviving from the Roman era. Not as huge as the colosseum in Rome but in much better condition above ground. The colosseum can be visited below ground where you can see the pens for animals and gladiators plus areas for the mechanisms. Here in Nimes it seems you cannot go to the subterranean part of the arena. However some work underground appeared to be in progress during our visit.
Now used for events and bullfighting of both types, Spanish and Camargue. Apparently the Camargue bulls and cows are much treasured in this region if they put us a good performance in the Camargue style of bullfighting. We spent a while just enjoying the peace whilst sitting in the sun.

My wife and I toured the Arenes de Nimes on our visit to Nimes this past spring. It is amazing how well preserved the arena is. They were rehabbing it while we were there. It was really disappointing to see the rehab work that had been done. On the seats and the steps they were cementing over the cracks and holes that had been there for centuries. In my opinion, they were going too far in taking away the antiquity atmosphere of the arena. It was making it look too new and modern. I’m glad I got to see it before they messed up the old vibe of the arena.

This is a very impressive Roman amphitheatre which is fun to explore, if you don't mind steps! It is very large with the internal structure very well preserved. It is often used for music concerts during the summer so you should expect seating and a stage to be in place if you visit inside. It can be closed when larger concerts are being set up. The bonus is that you can listen to sound checks in the afternoons and concerts in the evenings from the steps or open air cafes outside the arena.

This is the most complete remaining Roman arena. It is much better than the one i Arles, and if you have to choose one, choose this one. The entrance fee includes an audioguide, and you get a real feel for the place. Unfortunately, I was rather sickened by the detailed description of the horrors of the Roman exhibitions, which resulted in killing animals and people. And today they continue to kill animals, but only bulls and not lions. But after you turn off the audioguide you can wander throughout the entire arena, which also provides a view of Nîmes from the top.

Be sure to check the schedule before making the drive to Nimes. Unfortunately on the day of our visit, the city was having a big street party and we were only able to walk around the outside of this beautiful arena as there was a bullfight inside. Big crowds in the city on the day of our visit made for a less than pleasant experience. With so many other options, Nimes will not be on our return visit list. The arena at Orange is much more impressive.

Arenes de Nimes is a fantastic sight to visit. It is one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. It is almost 2000 years old, having been built around the period of the so called Flavian Dynasty which ruled the Roman empire from AD 69 to AD 96. It was constructed a few years after the Colosseum in Rome which was built in the year AD 79 (during the reign of emperor Titus). It is in fairly excellent condition as it has been well maintained. Various events take place in it periodically. It is easy to get to and not difficult at all walking around it. It was such a pleasure to visit and we would highly recommend it.

I'm only leaving a single mark as I wouldn't be allowed to leave a review otherwise.
What a waste of a good arena.
Stoneware covered in scaffolding for a concert, bitumised centre and vehicles parked inside. No notification of what was happening inside before we bought our ticket. Rude staff when I questioned why we weren't told beforehand ($$$). He did however inform us not to go to the tower as tour groups got priority over individuals and we wouldn't be allowed up.

Bonjour,
