Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As our time in Lille was limited, we didn’t have the opportunity to visit the city hall and the adjoining belfry dating from 1924–1932. We did manage to have a look at the outside, though. Both buildings were designed by architect Émile Paul Désiré Dubuisson (1873–1947) in a style mixing elements of Art Deco and Flemish Revival in a harmonious way. The belfrey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is amazingly thin and very high (104 m), and we regretted not being able to enjoy the views from the top. At its foot, we noticed two statues of warriors by French sculptor Carlo Sarrabezolles (1888–1971), representing Lydéric and Phinaert, two legendary characters linked to the foundation of the city of Lille. Their rather crude appearance is due to the fact that they have been carved directly into the setting concrete.

Despite its young age, this bell tower, along with the other 22 bell towers of Northern France, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The young age is explained by the fact that its predecessor was destroyed during the First World War, because Flanders became the site of fierce battles between the Entente and Germany. However, if you don't know this, you may not notice it. Architect Emile Dubuisson stylized the bell tower from Flemish architecture, although an attentive tourist will see elements of the Art Deco style fashionable in the first third of the XX century in the bell tower. As you know, it is in this style that the famous skyscrapers of New York like the Chrysler Building are built. The architect did not build a skyscraper, he made the tallest one for the bell tower. Built in 1932, the 104-meter bell tower of Lille is still the tallest municipal building in France. to see the roofs of Lille, you need to overcome 400 steps. We couldn't do it because we were here late at night. The only one. what you won't see or hear on this bell tower is bells. Such is the result of a bell tower without bells...

Great views and information about Lille from the tower. Get here early if the town is busy as only a limited number are allowed in at a time. We went on a rugby weekend so it was busy and they had to turn away people to come later for the afternoon session.

Visiting one of the more charming areas of the city. Good idea if rain isn't too strong. Lol. We can take a tour to sightseeing the architectural beauty, art galleries, museums, theatres . Be careful, most of the Streets in the old town are paved. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes. To restrict the architectural details of facades it should gives speech a more interesting style.

This bell tower can be climbed by over 100 steps or by lift and offers 360 degrees view at the top. There are information boards as the visitor ascends or descends to read in different languages including English

This is a nice thing to do if visiting Lille, we took the lift from the interim floor and to be honest regretted it. The walk would have been quite challenging but it would have made the experience more fun I think. We walked down.

Just be careful of the time you get there, if you want to avoid a wait I recommend getting there at 10 - 15 mins before the published morning or afternoon opening times, and you’ll be in with no delay (hopefully).

Nice views from the top and it’s only 15 mins walk to the Palais de beaux-arts which is brilliant.

Total trip time for the Belfry is less than an hour.

An afternoon spare, we decided to climb some stairs! The Beffroi has lots. The walk up is broken up at each level with historical info. As you climb, you also gain an unfolding view from the windows at each level. The stairs are not for the unfit. They go on & on. The view is fine, but some may question the effort vs. reward equation.

This is well worth going to the top. The views of the city are spectacular. There are quite a few steps to manage before reaching the lift to the top. An audio guide is available to tell the history

Not for someone afraid of heights! This high-level 360*C view of Lille is excellent to actually grasp how big this city actually is. You can see for miles and you can even spot LOSC’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy in the distance.

The price is very reasonable too. The payment desk is at the very bottom of the building with several flights of stairs and a slightly rickety glass elevator involved to get right to the top of the structure.

When visiting Lille, I’d certainly recommend this activity.

Every first wednesday of the month the entry is free, so we went. Very bad idea. There was a long line outside and the gate keeper was very angry and unfriendly. He would only let 8 people in at the same time. He just shut the door in our faces without any explanation. He refused to tell us how long we would have to wait, and would not answer any of questions. We left after waiting 30 minutes. It was horrible. Definitely do not go there, it is not worth it.

Dear Elke, We are really sorry for that, please accept our apologies. The first Wednesday of the month is free for everyone, as you wrote. The last week was also at the heart of the french an belgian holidays and the 1st of November was a bank Holiday : so many people came at the same time to discover the Belfry... Unfortunately, our building is ruled by precise and restrictive security conditions as the building can receive a few people at the same time in the higher levels. As a matter of fact, only 50 can be elcomed in the complete building and 18 people can visit the top of the building at the same time : when visitors are too numerous, we unfortunately have to close the doors and manage different waiting areas inside the building. We hope we could welcome you in better conditions when you come back to Lille. Best regards.
