Come and visit La Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg, a family attraction all about man’s adventures under the sea, and a must when you are in Normandy. You can spend the whole day here and go round “Titanic, return to Cherbourg”, an exhibition which has its like nowhere else in France. It is on the theme of the celebrated liner, but also on emigration. You will also be able to listen to the Captain of Le Redoutable telling you about his life on board the largest submarine open to the public in the world. Then you will gaze in awe at our 17 aquariums, including the magical, 11-metre-deep, Abyssal Aquarium.

Excellent exhibition but!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do not expect a cloakroom to leave cases or coats

you need 4-5 hours to visit the entire exhibition not so much fun when having to wear/carry a coat & a packpack! I have never been to any museum or similar without a cloakroom... read more

Spent 5 hrs here lots to see and do with tour of nuclear submarine highlight of the day. Bonus of 1 free ticket with 1 paying adult on presentation of of a Brittany ferries ticket which I know is running until the end of July 17 saved a load of cash but the lady on desk knew nothing about the... I did not venture into the specialised exhibition area but just the submersibles display in the main hall. These alone are worth a visit to marvel at these fantastic machines that have gone to great depths to explore and exploit the wonders of the deep ocean. There is the Aristide from France, Alvin from Woods Hole in the US plus... More

Although they have clearly made some modifications to make it safe to walk around (like removing the reactor) you still get a very good feel for life aboard a ballistic nuclear submarine. The audio guide (in English) is excellent and it does not shy away from the nuclear deterrent purpose. When seen from outside the sub is much bigger than... More

We didn't know what to expect but this attraction was 4 in one. It has a large submersible display, a nuclear submarine, an aquarium and a Titanic display. We spent several hours hear and enjoyed every minute of it. Very highly recommended.

Exciting, interactive, interesting equally for kids and grown-ups. Very well organised, signposted, educating, highly recommended to visit. Definitely one of the best for sightseeing in Cherbourg!

This is great use of what was a gateway to the world when ocean liners were the ultimate. The displays are well presented and the information is very good and the site is designed for families. My one problem was the food available so maybe take your own as with most French sites picnic areas are always provided.

The former steamboat terminal repurposed as museum is worth a visit. The visit of the decommissioned nuclear submarine is the highlight. But other parts of this immense complex are very much worth it.
