A great addition to the Giverny experience
I can fill in a little background on the Musee des Impressionnismes. It was conceived and financed by Daniel J Terra, an American who invented a very fast drying ink that made publishing glossy magazines such as Look and Life possible. Mr Terra financed the operation of the museum, which was originally named The American Museum of Impressionism until his death. The museum was an adjunct to the Monet house and gardens and a welcome addition to the memory of the hundreds of American painters who visited and lived in Giverny at the time of Monet. After Mr Terra’s death the museum declined somewhat in the exhibition quality having lost some of the founders passion and funding. However, the museum gardens and some of the exhibitions are still very rewarding. In summary, I probably would not make the trip to Giverny just to see the Musee unless there was an exhibit that I checked out beforehand but the trifecta of Monet’s Gardens, the Musee and lunch at the Hotel Baudy together make an unbeatable team.

    It is just OK
I wish I can give better rating but 3 stars is generous. I visited because of Renoir exhibition (Renoir is my favorite painter) and I have to say part of me is disappointed as there were only 12 paintings in a Renoir expo, but on the other hand I am grateful I saw some of his Getnesey works which are just awesome. But... Museum itself (for an entrance of 10€, plus you have to come all the way from (usually) Paris is just not worthy. I understand the museum is still 'new', but for museum of impressionismes, it has very few impressionism names which attract attention/most people like. So, if it was not for Renoir, my rating would be probably 2 stars, as there ARE really good and small museums you can visit for 5 or 7€. What they offer (oztside exhibitions) is just too little.

    Great museum
This was a great museum. It is not too big and beautifully laid out. I love impressionism anyway, but I felt like this is particularly good. The theme for the current exhibit is the sea and includes storms, beach, ports, Brittany, Normandy. That happens to also be my favorite Subject, so I was really fortunate to come to this museum. I highly recommend it.
Dear visitor, thank you for your review. We are delighted you enjoyed your visit of the “Impressionism and the Sea” exhibition! We hope to see you soon at the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny, The museum team

A nice add-on to our Monet visit - worthwhile during this Impressionism 150th year!!
Our second visit to the Musee (in three visits to Giverny to visit Monet's home and gardens). We enjoyed our first visit in 2019. The draw this time was the exhibition Impressionism and the Sea. Knowing that some of the first Impressionist paintings were painted "en plein air" at the beach and along the northern coast of France or at the harbors of towns along the Seine river. Wonderful to see the Boudin and Courbet paintings that preceeded the more well known Impressionists: Monet, Pissarro, Manet, Gauguin, and Jongkind. This is a fairly extensive exhibition...we spent close to an hour in the gallery. A nice add-on to our Monet visit...and worthwhile during this 150th anniversary year celebrating Impressionism.

Visit to the house and garden of Monet is worth millions. So I did not regret going to Giverny. If you had spent time at Museums d'Orsay and de l'Orangerie, the scenery here will give you endless inspiration.

But this is a review of what's called the museum of impressionism in the village. It's almost an empty house with poor collection and amateurish garden. You may end up paying the admission of a big museum. Frankly, I don't understand why this institution carries the name, "impressionism" and why it even has to exist in this beautiful village.

What is worse, is to find staffs unhelpful and rude.

They were running a small exhibition of Rothko alongside the image of Monet's water lilies. You will wonder how it is even possible, how artificial it is to connect the two very different level of work. After paying more than 10 euro, I thought it was ripping off Monet. Three or more euros of audio assistance, which is a very shortened and a common sense of Monet's life.

Please spend as much time in Monet's house. Skip the museum.

We came here after visiting the main attraction (Monet's house and gardens which were sadly terrible) and for €12 per adult I would expect a lot more on show.
The current exhibition to do with Impressionists and the sea, was interesting and enjoyable, but it was pretty limited compared with so many other museums and exhibitions I have been to, and definitely not good value for money.
We came here after being totally disappointed by the Monet attraction, but it ultimately felt like throwing money at something to try to compensate for such an anticlimax.
Give Giverny a miss and enjoy Monet and the rest of the Impressionists in many other better locations around the world.

An impressionist museum in Giverny that did not actually have any impressionist pictures in …

It turns out the museum hosts a variety of guests artists for temporary exhibitions. In our case it was for a random video artist that took ten minutes to walk through.

This would have been fine if the ticket desk at Monet’s Garden, who happily sold us a double ticket to the gardens/house and the impressionist museum had mentioned it was a random video show only.

Yes we should have checked but please , please check what is actually at the impressionist museum because it is not necessarily impressionists!

Stick to single ticket access to Monet’s garden and house which is great and then mooch around Giverny for free.

Exhibition in the gallery interesting and fresh. BUT our visit was ruined by a horrible meal in their restaurant. No vegetarian option, cold “Bouchée a La reine” and when sent back, re presented still tepid, un-necessarily fussy menu,
Long delays .. so disappointing as we often enjoyed a meal here. What is going on?!(The only plus was a delightful waitress!)

Dear Sarah, Thank you for your message. We are delighted you enjoyed your visit of the "Impressionism and the Sea" exhibition. However please note that the Oscar restaurant is a public service delegation, thus it is not attached to the musée des impressionnismes Giverny. After finding out that a special exhibit of Joaquin Sorolla works were being shown, we HAD to come. Wonderful, we have enjoyed this Spanish Impressionists works for decades, now to revisit some old favorites from Madrid and see so many pieces new to us, especially the several on loan from Cuba, blues in seascapes that were magical. Over 150 works arranged by type, portraits, landscapes, intimate scenes , studies, and family. A group of paintings from the Paris Salons circa 1890 topped it off. The gift store and cafe are here to be enjoyed as well. A visit of 3-4 hours for us, all very worth the time and euros.

While in Giverny on August 12, I decided to visit again the Musée des Impressionnismes. I liked it and each time, I'm enjoying the visit. This time, there was an exhibition "Reflets d'une collection" of paintings of Reiji HIRAMATSU and photographs of Bernard PLOSSU. A lot of people might be disappointed as they are expected a museum full of Monet's paintings. This is not the case. There is only 1 painting of Monet "Nymphéas avec rameaux de saule",

In 2009, the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny replaced the Museum of American Art which was managed by the Terra Foundation for American Art between 1992 and 2008. Housed in the same building, the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny is a public institution for cultural cooperation (EPCC) which invites visitors to discover the Impressionist artistic movement in all its diversity, including its influences and its sequels.

Two temporary exhibitions punctuate each opening season of the museum from the end of March to the beginning of November. In addition, a permanent presentation, Around Claude Monet, allows visitors to contemplate masterpieces from all over the world and to better understand Impressionism.

It's a small museum with a total of about 80 paintings of various painters (Signac, Luce, Boudin, Auburtin).

We went to see Monet's House and Gardens a short walk away. We went here first and bought the combination ticket for the museum and Monet's House and Gardens, whereby saving having to queue up in the much longer line at Monet's. ALSO, we turned down a path off to the right and were able to enter right near the entrance to the gardens , which is at the back of the yard proper to the house (Caution: An attendant has to be there to let you in that way and I fear it is not always the case. The museum is a great collection and can be seen in less than 2 hours unless you want to spend extended time with some of the paintings. Think of it as the cherry on top of your visit to the Musee D'Orsay in Paris and Monet's house and gardens down the street.

Dear LosAngelesFunster, Thank you for your comment. We are a young museum and our permanent collection is a modest one, so the museum is mainly dedicated to the organization of two temporary exhibitions a year. We hope that you will come back and visit our new exhibitions. In 2016, we propose “Caillebotte, Painter and Gardener” from March 25 to July 3 and “Sorolla and the Paris Years” from July 14 to November 6. The combined ticket with Monet’s House and Gardens is indeed a good option to avoid queueing. Best regards, The staff of the musée des impressionnismes Giverny

The Museum of American Art (Giverny) is now the Musee d'Impressionisme. Giverny is a small town, a small tourist town, and this museum is definitely a tourist trap. If you're a traveler on a budget don't waste your money here! We didn't realize that there was both a paid exhibit and a free exhibit. The free exhibit is downstairs and is very small, but remember, it's free. As for the paid exhibit, it's only 3 rooms and not worth the 7, 50 euros. If you have money to spend and want to do absolutely EVERYTHING in Giverny, then pay the money for what is really a very small gallery exhibit. Otherwise, skip it and the line, go downstairs to see the free stuff and move on. Don't be fooled by the name of the museum, and it's location in Giverny- there is no Claude Monet here. The house and gardens are great! Even in the fall! The "museum" is forgettable at best.

Dear C-inFrance, We are sorry that you were so disappointed at our museum. The museum ticket gives access to an indeed modest permanent exhibition – but we strive to make it possible to always have a few original works by Monet here in Giverny because there are none permanently – and to the temporary exhibitions. Temporary exhibitions show from 80 to 120 works on 600 square meters. And the museum as a whole provides an hour-visit. We do not intend to “fool” visitors: our museum’s name is not musée Claude Monet but musée des impressionnismes Giverny and we do present impressionist works. No trap but an invitation to be open-minded and to discover and learn more about art! Regards, The staff of the musée des impressionnismes Giverny
