About
The first thing you notice about the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux-MuMa Le Havre is its breathtaking coastal setting. As you approach the spacious, light-filled museum building, Henri-Georges Adam's monumental concrete sculpture The Signal heightens the experience, framing a slice of the maritime landscape that inspired many of the works in the museum's collections. Le Havre has nurtured artists like Monet, Dubuffet, Friesz, Dufy and Braque. And MuMa is a pillar of the city's art history. Inaugurated in 1961 by André Malraux, then France's Minister of Cultural Affairs, MuMa is known for its late-19th and 20th-century collections. From the Impressionists to the Fauves, the museum's collections have been enriched by gifts such as works from the studio of Eugène Boudin and the Marande donation. More recently, Hélène Senn-Foulds donated an impressive collection built up by her grandfather, Olivier Senn, in the early 20th century. Thanks to the donation, MuMa's collection of Impressionist works is today one of France's largest, and the public can now enjoy works by Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas, Courbet and Corot.

We went on a cold, wet day In February not expecting much as we have left many galleries of modern art somewhat baffled.
Not this one, the collection is largely of paintings from the impressionist era, many with local connections. We were impressed.
There was also an exhibition of more abstract works which was interesting.
Overall, an excellent collection, a spacious building and well worth a visit. It was €7 when we went.

Excellent collection of impressionist paintings by the masters primarily of southern coastal towns. Modern building located on the waterfront. Very much worth a visit and it is was free the Saturday we visited.

We were a bit surprised to find out that the collections were so limited, with one or a few pieces by artist for most of them. While there were quite a few Eugène Boudin, they are not the most famous ones.

It’s a great museum if you like Impressionism in particular. Many paintings by Le Havre artists of that era and a lot of Eugene Boudin. I liked his study of cows the best. Some other paintings but focus is on the impressionists and other styles close to that time period. I enjoyed it, but the limited selection means it won’t be a winner for everyone. It is a small space which made it easy to navigate and see everything in a short time.

it was an amazing and beautiful visit, as the building itself is already worth to come here. even more so the exhibition with some great permanent collection and a real highlight was the current part. you will have to register your visit in advance online, and there is only a very limited number of people allowed for each timeslot, so make sure to get your booking done.

The concept is great if you define it as a space in order to show art. The problem I have with the place is that despite standing in front of some priceless art the building does not do them justice. Similar pieces used to be in the Musee du Jeux de Peaume now moved to the Musee d'Orsay. The former was a building by the Louvres that did not do the works justice. The later makes it difficult with the low lighting but at least its an attempt. In the Malraux the lighting is awful and the space currently may as well have a 5 a side football pitch one end for the emptiness. This said if you are a fan and student of the art it is worth seeing and being close to it despite the shortcomings of the building.

The museum main collection is composed mainly of impressionism. One room for Eugene boudin, some Raoul Duffy. Not enough variety...The collection by itself is so so. The building architecture is what makes this museum worth a visit.

Nice museum in an interesting area. The people were friendly and the art amazing. The Money along with other impressionist were a delight and the museum is set up in a way that is not conventional but very easy to observe the art and appreciate it. It does have a gift store.

Fantastic museum with some famous impressionist paintings in their permanent exhibition. Nicely laid out and not too busy even on a rainy morning in August.

When we visited there was a special exhibition with the work from Raoul Dufy, a native son of the city. The exhibition used all of the ground floor space, but was very good and informative. On the 1st floor there a small section with 16th to 18th century art, which isn't great. However, the collection of impressionist and pre-impressionist paintings, is excellent and well worth a detour to Le Havre. Of the pre-impressionists, Eugene Boudin is very well represented, native of Honfleur, his family moved to Le Havre when e was 5. Nowhere as near as large as the impressionist section of musée d'Orsay, the big advantage here is the lack of crowds.
