I fell in love with Rouen! Beautiful town away from the city crowds. If you’re looking for a relaxing old world feel, this is it. As the birth place of Edward the IV I was especially interested. A short and inexpensive train ride from Paris. Well worth the trip. I recommend a couple of days to really take it in.

Just another beautiful piece of architecture in this historic town. Strolling along Rue du Gros Horloge and you can’t miss this amazing archway. A fabulous sight and well worth spending time to admire.

The main reason to go to this street is to see the large clock on the arch over the street. Aside from the clock, the street itself is unpleasant: packed with tourists and junky stores. If you go a few blocks away, you can find similar medieval streets without the crowds and a more authentic store mix, albeit with no clock.

We followed this road from the Saint Joan of Arc church to the clock. It then led to the Notre Dame Cathedral if you kept going. The road was quite nice since it was cobbled. There were shops along the whole street. It is a nice area to walk around in the city.

I have to say from the start that on the whole I was disappointed with the city of Rouen which is the Capital of Upper Normandy. Perhaps my expectations were high after having read a lot about it. The fact that old and new buildings are mixed together dilutes it's appearance and it's beauty. With the exception of great part of the old town the rest is a mix of styles. The main reason for this of course is the destruction, more than 45%, caused by bombing during the second world war, a great tragedy to this city.
However the Rue du Gros-Horloge is one of the exceptions. We parked our van near the Cathedral in the Haute Vieille Tour parking. This is Rouen's main street and makes for a very interesting walk which leads to the Place du Vieux Marche, site of the martyrdom of Joan of Arc and the modern church dedicated to her.. The main attraction in this street is the Gros Horloge. This is a one handed, gold gilded medieval astronomical clock made in 1389, moved from the belfry and installed in a Renaissance arch crossing the street in 1527. Under the number VI, a deity associated with the day of the week appears at noon on a chariot. Above the clock face,a globe indicates the phase of the moon. The dial is two and a half meters in diameter. The clock keeper was responsible for its maintenance and lived in the small loggia next to the archway. You can visit this loggia and also see the actual clock movement. We visited on Whit Monday, a public holiday, so it was closed. This quaint street has shops and cafes with many original half timbered houses. Although it was raining we still enjoyed walking in this historical street.

Literally, to walk on this street is to walk not exactly through time, but under it. Rue du Gross Horloge is a lovely medieval street, but the clock is the height of this experience. Of all the town clocks I have seen in Europe, this is the one that comes to mind first. It is stunningly beautiful and very well maintained. As you walk through the gate under the clock, be sure to look up at the bas relief under the arch. If you didn't know that Rouen was a big part of the wool trade in centuries past, you'll believe it after seeing the under side of the arch.

Many visitors are unaware that they can climb to the top of this magnificent clock tower. There is a recorded history and narrative available which offers considerable information about the clock motif and workings. Although I was a bit frightened when I walked the catwalk outside of the tower, the view of Rouen was magnificent!

This is a review about the little advertised museum where you can get in to the building and see behind the face of this famous clock. The door is on the right side of the road, just under the clock arch. It cost us only a few Euros and the visit was really interesting. We climbed inside the building and looked down on the street from behind the clock face. Another two floors up and we saw the actual workings of the clock. Up and up again and we could get into the bell tower that sits above the clock and to the right. The bells are huge! Up again and you emerge on a walkway high above the street and can walk round the outside of the bell tower with fantastic views of the cathedral and surrounding streets. Warning - we visited on a hot day and the lead on the roof gets hot. Be careful of touching it as you walk round on the outside. Really interesting audio guide included in price.

No matter which way you are headed as you are circumnavigating Rouen you will encounter Rue du Gros-Horloge. Aside from the obvious uniqueness of the time pieces a quick jaunt up for the view is worthy too. The area surrounded by shoppes, eateries and drinking establishments can consume some worthwhile time in the area.
