If you are interested in castles, military power and history, this is a must do place. However, be warned, if you want a perfect mock-up of life in a castle and lots of displays for children, then maybe not. It is a large site, with few restored buildings per se, but those that have been restored are, in my view,... More

A fine example of a fortress, Chinon has history coming out of every tower. Set in a fabulous location for defending, it has been carefully restored, and with it's prominent views over the town below is well worth a visit.

Stunning location, great for learning about the history of France and England. Really enjoyed the whole ambiance of Chinon - particularly the lift from the riverside town to the Forteresse!

I definitely recommend a visit to the Fortress Chinon. It is an historic fortress as this is the place Joan of Arc was anointed to lead the French army. The castle is well maintained and has videos throughout explaining its history. A bonus is the beautiful views of the valley.

We didn't go inside 18 months ago when we were here last but did over the weekend just past... And cannot say enough about the quality of the experience. Fantastic space and place...magnificent views of the valley, and the proprietors have worked hard to bring the history of the place alive.

I have been here a couple of times now, however this last visit showed the fortress in a different light. The tour and the fortress are very impressive however I think they have gone a little too far with their restorations and it left me feeling a little robbed of the past. That said this fortress is one not to... More

Be prepared to take your time and truly experience this wonderful place. You can wander on your own, purchase an audio guide, or join a guided tour. I highly recommend joining some (there are several at various locations throughout the day) of the tours if your schedule permits. On your own, you are free to go in and out of... More

An amazing castle / fortress steeped in history. Breathtaking views from the ramparts and loads of information on the history of the fortress. You could easily spend many hours here as there is so much to see and do or just relax and look at the views.

This was a return trip, after nearly 20 years. It has had a face lift, sand blasting and new flooring but it still retains its sense of history and majesty. It is one of those places that has so many hidden corners that you feel that you may be the first person to discover them. We went on a very... More
