About
The Château of Cognac overlooking the Charente river was initially a 10th-century fortress designed to stop Norman invasions, and then in the 15th century became a stately home which was the birthplace of one of France’s most illustrious kings, Francis I. Baron Otard, who had founded its Cognac House in 1795, quickly understands that the thick walls provide exceptional aging conditions for his eaux-de-vie. He purchases the Château, saving it from total destruction The Château of Cognac, which became a historic monument, is now a witness to French history and a Cognac House. We are offering a variety of tours combining two aspects of history: the history of France and the history of Baron Otard cognac up to the present day. Welcome to the Château of Cognac!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a great tour for the money. First we began with a tour of the Chateau and then we learned about Cognac production. Second, we did a blind taste test of two Cognacs. We sampled various foods while blindfolded and guessed what they were and how they enhanced the Cognac. A lot of fun.

Very nice to do a tour of the Cognac makers of France.
Loads of history and our guide really knew his stuff.
Included tastings.
No real examination of the bottling process - just a poster on a wall.
One thing you must do when in Cognac.

Very informative tour. The guide did a very good job considering the large number in the group 40+ being my only criticism.

Our English speaking tour guide was friendly and interested in our understanding the process of cognac making. Of interest was the castle and the story of its owner while walking room to room in which the history was being made as well as the cognac

Amazing and informative tour by Marion our professional tour guide, whose English was excellent. The Castle is atmospheric and the history fascinating, along with facts about the present day production of Cognac. Not to mention the tasting! Delicious! We enjoyed immensely.

The whole experience from the tour to the history, the tastings, and our guide, Aude, was awesome, super!
The introduction to the making of cognac, the story of Francois I, the difference in the barrels and ratings of the cognac, and finally bottling our very own cognac was a delightful day!

The best tour we have had while in France. Informative, interesting and full of history.
The tour guide spent the time answering all questions, even though it made her over time on our tour.
The explanation into the way Cognac is made, more importantly savoured and appreciated while consuming, made for a educational couple of hours.
Well worth the money and the time.

We zouden het chateau graag bezoeken maar vragen ons af of je hond mee mag?
Coordinatrice Digitale Brand Homes

Hello, thank you for your question. If you can keep your dog in a bag during the tour that would be perfect. For safety and sanitary reasons we cannot accept big dogs that can walk in Le Château's rooms & cellars.

.chateauroyaldecognac their website. We didn’t book but in March outside school holidays we felt it was safe to take a chance. English tours are at 2.00 pm, booking is probably the best option in higher season. Have fun!

Dear Paul, it actually depends on the seasons and busyness in cognac. I know that all guides speak English (as they are prohibited to do both tours). To ensure yourself give them a call +33545368886
