Eglise St-Trophime is a lovely church, built in the Romanesque style. It was constructed around 600 or so years ago, but the site has a history going back even further to around the 5th century. It's a church worth visiting if you happen to be in the vicinity.

The Saint-Trophime Primatial Catholic Church is a stunning architectural gem, with construction dating back to the 12th century. While some of the tapestries may appear faded, this only adds to the church's charm and historical allure. A notable feature is the vast collection of relics of saints, securely locked away behind metal bars in a church alcove, offering a glimpse into the religious significance of the site. Like many churches in France, Saint-Trophime is adorned with numerous statues and paintings depicting standard components of Christianity, contributing to its beauty and spiritual atmosphere. Overall, a very beautiful and enriching visit for those interested in history and religious art.

The 12th century archway outside the church on the Place de la Republique is impressive enough. On walking around the church interior, it can appear quite plain, but if you're a church architecture buff, the church captures the moment that church architecture changed from Norman (in this case Provencal Norman) to gothic, with the use of pointed arches. The scale and the height achieved by such an early church is impressive. The person in the information booth who I spoke with was really informative and enthusiastic about the church, giving me more information about the tapestries and architecture, which I appreciated. It is a lovely, calm church, which I would recommend for a visit or for a moment of peace when needed.

Pay the two euro sixty to visit the wonderful cloisters of this church, for me they were the highlight of my visit to Arles. There is a good short film ( with English sub titles) that is worth watching before you walk around.

During a river cruise, we participated in a shore excursion of Arles where we engaged in a historic and photographic walking tour. Located on the main square, Eglise St. Trophime was part of our visit. We were so fortunate to have had a tour guide who provided us with an extensive history of St. Trophime. What incredible architecture. How photographic!
According to available literature, "The Church of St. Trophime was built in the late 11th and 12th centuries and was named after the city's first bishop. This fine Romanesque edifice is notable for its magnificent carved west portal, interesting furnishings and glorious cloisters containing impressive sculpture...they show all sorts of biblical scenes, like the Apocalypse and the Gospel of St. Matthew. If you look up at the tympanum you can identify Jesus seated above the 12 apostles, beneath some 40 angels in the archivolt.
The interior of St. Trophime has early Christian sarcophagi, 13th century plaques and epitaphs, baroque paintings and nine Aubusson tapestries from the 17th century.
Located in the Place de la Republique, not far from the Quai Lamartine pier. Don't miss it!

We went o an evening mass here. It was memorable. The organ music and singing were like concert quality. The interior of the Church is spectacular. So much history here!

Make sure you find time to visit, especially the sculpture, and make sure you see the cloisters. An easy walk from the amphitheatre but you might miss it if you are just here for the day.

Lovely old church steeped in local history
Was built as a cathedral when Arles had its own bishop. Is no longer a cathedral as the bishop doesn't live there anymore, but it is still the same beautiful, old, historic church

As an architecture buff, I really appreciated the Romanesque style of this former cathedral, which was built between the 12th and 15th centuries. I found the church's main door area on the West side to be extraordinary with its sculptures, including a depiction of the "Last Judgment." This shows, in part, figures of those heading below, chained together and shuffling along to the horror that awaits. Meanwhile, saints greet others en route to heaven. I spent at least 10 minutes looking at all the artwork here before entering the church through a small open door on the right side. A beggar sat on the step, with her hand outstretched.
The darker-than-expected interior presented a long, central, 65-feet-high nave with side aisles. But this less-than-desirable lighting and the absolute quiet contributed to a wonderful peaceful atmosphere. I looked at various items, such as faded 17th-century tapestries from the Baroque period and an early Christian sarcophagus, thought to hold the remains of Saint Honoratus. He is depicted in one of the stained-glass windows.
Nothing inside matched the exterior work and I recommend that anyone visiting Arles consider coming by to at least see that. I left completely understanding why UNESCO has named this a World Heritage Site, declaring the church to be a prime example of Romanesque architecture in France.
There is no admission charge to see the church, which is generally closed between noon and 2 p.m.

We stopped by to kill some time before a jeep tour in Arles, and so glad we did. The church is beautiful, and we were surprised to see a Camino office inside as well as a chapel full of different saint relics, floor to ceiling practically. There is some beautiful painting still present in the side chapels, and there is a quiet peace about the place that was nice to experience. Its not large, only took us about 40 minutes to enjoy the entire space. A nice place to duck in for a few moments peace in a busy tourist day.
