Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I went there based on the tripadvisor map but it was not that place. The wrong address on the map on the tripadvisor site was wired. I always go on a trip with tripadvisor and I am satisfied except this time.

A peaceful island owned by Cistercian Monks. There are very clear paths to walk along which take you around and through the vineyards grown by the monks for olive oil and wine. The Monastery was undergoing refurbishment when we visited and you can't go in the Abbey until after 3.30pm. There is a good-sized restaurant and a place to buy snacks and soft drinks but the toilets are very French (primitive - hole in the ground!) The boat journey was smooth and takes 30 minutes each way.

The monastery and all buildings on the island are lovely, but close for two hours for lunch. The tours are also only in French and as mediocre French speakers, this was impossible for us to follow in any meaningful way. An English audio guide would be much more helpful. Bless the volunteers who translated for us to the best of their ability at the chapels.

Thank you for mentioning that point.
Volunteers accompanying visitors speak English. During summer, they are young retreatants and their level of English is not assured indeed. Some document are available in English but you also have to know that we have a spiritual vocation rather than a tourist one. Our turn to thank you the volunteers who are used to give information in English. Best regards.

I walked around Ile St Honorat and came across this fortified monastery, but was disappointed that I could not go inside to see what it was like or to see the views from its height. There were no signs to indicate if this is ever possible. It was a little disappointing.

We are sorry you did not entered into the building ; it's a free entry.
All summer long, young people also propose free guided visits in the tower monastery that is closed from 12:30 to 2pm for lunch break.

A really impressive castle and it is free to visit. In fact the whole island is worth a visit because it keeps on delivering.

Great afternoon visit to the island and a pleasant and easy walk around the island before getting the last ferry back to Cannes. Definitely worth a visit.

Thank you for your kind words. Definitely worth a visit indeed, even during winter : the sky is so clear and the island so quiet.

A religious fortification built out into the sea. One hermit came, and then other 'hermits' thought the life was so very good they joined him, making the basis for the monastery we see today. St. Patrick is said to have stayed there before travelling to Ireland. I felt looking at the outside was a good as looking within. Just my view.

We had one day for Cannes and decided to tour the city then take the water taxi to this island off the coast. From the ancient fortress to the monastery and chapel to a wine tasting in the grapes orchard to the rustic restaurant this a great experience. Of course it was humbling to see all the beautiful yachts anchoring off the islands coast. Be prepared to walk in the elements.

Bonjour, la tour est-elle encore en travaux ? Ou le serait-elle encore en février 2022 ? Merci de votre réponse.

What is the cost of entering the monastery?

It is free, and in fact the entire island is free to visit. The only cost is the ferry ride over. The monastery is pretty much open air and you are free to wander through on your own. There is not much in the way of information posted like we are probably more used to here, so if you are interested in the history, I suggest reading up beforehand.

Is a visit to the winery for wine tasting available year round? We are in Cannes through sept 29th and would like to visit and include this experience.

The winery is only available to tour on the 1st Friday of each month. The is a shop at the monastery where you can purchase bottles of wine. We still higher recommend going. We were just there today.

How long would you allow for a visit to La Monastere Fortifie and to see the island?

We took the 11AM ferry over to the island (takes about 25 minutes), then we walked around the perimeter, visited the fortress (took about 25 minutes) and ate our picnic lunch before catching the 1:30pm ferry back (the ferry departs back for Cannes at the bottom of every hour.

Is there a water taxi from Cannes to Le Monastere Fortifie
Karl M
406 contributions
The water taxi runs throughout the year, costs around €15 return for an adult and takes 15 mins each way. It leaves from the end of the Quay adjacent to Laubeuf car park on the western side of Cannes port. The schedule varies according to time of year but runs up to 10 times a day in the Summer. There's a website (in English) - just Google "water taxi St Honorat Cannes".
